The teachings of Gautama Buddha and Ashtavakra do feel close, especially in:
• detachment
• observing the mind
• freedom from suffering
But there’s also a subtle difference:
• Buddha → “no-self” (anatta), gradual path
• Ashtavakra → “pure self (awareness)”, instant realization

Still, the experience they point to often feels very similar.
Some powerful verses from Ashtavakra Gita (simple meaning)
1. “You are not the body”
“You are not earth, water, fire, air, or space.
To attain liberation, know yourself as the witness of all these.”
Simple meaning:

This directly hits my earlier idea—no need for priest to define US.
2. “Freedom is now”
“If you detach from the body and rest in awareness,
you will be instantly happy, peaceful, and free.”
Meaning:
No long ritual, no waiting.
3. “Bondage is in the mind”
“You are bound only by the idea that you are bound.
Know yourself as free, and you are free.”
Meaning:
Very close to Buddhist insight about mind creating suffering.
4. “Let go of ‘mine’”
“Where there is ‘I’ and ‘mine’, there is bondage.
When these disappear, there is freedom.”
Meaning:
Same as attachment (तृष्णा) in Buddhism.
5. “You are the witness”
“You are the one witness of everything, always free.
Your only bondage is not seeing this.”
Meaning:
Why this feels close to Buddhism
Connection points:
• Buddhism: observe thoughts (vipassana)
• Ashtavakra: be the witness of thoughts
Both say:
• Don’t cling
• Don’t identify
• See clearly
But the key difference (important)
• Gautama बुद्ध :→ No permanent self (everything is changing)
• Ashtavakra : → There is a permanent awareness (self)

Same direction, slightly different philosophy. :-One-line summary
Buddha: “Nothing is you”
Ashtavakra: “Only awareness is you”
