HOUSTON (AP) — A shooting at a family gathering in Houston late Saturday left 16 people wounded, including an 18-year-old man who later died from his injuries, police said.
According to the Houston Police Department, gunfire erupted after an uninvited guest was asked to leave the party. The suspect, who remains at large, is believed to have opened fire, prompting others to shoot back in a chaotic exchange.
Officers responded to reports of gunshots around 12:50 a.m. Sunday at a home in southeast Houston. Upon arrival, they found multiple victims outside the residence, some with critical injuries.
"The scene was chaotic from the beginning," said Assistant Police Chief Patricia Cantu during a news briefing.
The wounded—ranging in age from 16 to 40—were transported to hospitals, with some victims arriving in private vehicles. At least one person was pronounced dead at the hospital, while others underwent emergency surgery.
Video footage from the scene showed overturned tables, party supplies, and evidence of a large gathering beneath a carport and outdoor tent. The Houston Fire Department treated some victims in a nearby restaurant parking lot.
As of Sunday evening, no suspects were in custody, though several individuals were briefly detained for questioning. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, pending family notification.
The investigation remains ongoing.
