Police arrest doctor on child sex traffic charge

Attleboro police on Wednesday arrested a 37-year-old doctor from Dartmouth after he was accused of setting up a paid sexual encounter with a 14-year-old boy and possessing child porn, authorities said. Dr. Sujan Kayastha, a hospitalist at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, was arraigned Thursday in Attleboro District Court on charges of possession of child pornography, two counts of disseminating obscene matter to a minor, two counts of electronic enticement of a child for prostitution, and trafficking of a person for sexual servitude, police said in a press release. A judge set bail at $75,000 and included several conditions, including having no contact with the victim or any other child under the age of 18, according to the Bristol district attorney’s office. Police started to investigate in December, after learning that the boy had allegedly been sexually assaulted and that “the juvenile had received cash in exchange for sexual activity from an adult male, thus being sexually exploited,” the release said. In addition, police said, “Kayastha then offered drugs, money, and alcohol to the juvenile, and made arrangements to meet with the victim and transport him to a hotel in Seekonk for the purposes of engaging in a sexual encounter.”

Kayastha graduated from Nepal Medical College in 2006

and was licensed to practice in Massachusetts in 2012, according to the database of the state Board of Registration in Medicine. He had never been disciplined by the board, according to the database.
