Regarding nepotism in Kathmandu University, there has been number of letters published from the faculties as well as KUPA in e-kantipur (24-27 May). Similarly, there are other write-ups in Nepali languages dailies and weeklies. We, ex graduates of KU, have compiled all these and put them in the following blog;

www.changeinku.blogspot.com

All the graduates and ex-faculteis are welcome to give their opinion. Let us destroy nepotism in KU.

I do not know Sureshraj Sharma but Sitaram Adhikari is brother of Radheshyam Adhikari(Senior Advocate/Current MP in Rajya Sabha/Strong leader in Congress). I do not see any possibility of taking any actions to these two thugs now government is headed by Congress. There is no difference in the people in Congress leadership and mandales. They can shift eitherside. I am not student of KU but people who study there are(most of them except few are gajadis). I know them personally, they never study but get good marks because of good relationship with teachers..........about facility and fees, i have heard that not satisfactory.I think administration and management is not effective.

Hey guys..

You can't blame quality of KU..It is the best in Nepal. Of course we must realize that the inherited quality may be because of doing many research projects rather than contribution of excellent teaching. I am proud of student's motivation.. Again Gajedies are everywhere.
Regarding the before post, qualified academician are always welcomed in KU. There is no such bias for accepting a best one, especially foreign graduates. It is true that, if you are relatives, you could be compromised. I believe, sharma and adhikari are the best chaps till now (among those survived in KU.. he he), even for the future of KU. Yeah there were many who forced to regin.......even whole department members and even school faculties. I don't mean like GIRIJA supporting Ceremonial Sharmatantra, but there is chain of currupts like we say for Nepal army about "jung-thapas". In my openian, faculties should got chance for improving their compitency and to do research independently. They must get liberties in general but not like those relatives of shamrma and adhikari enjoys. Yeah we must reform our KU..making it more democratics.. It is rediculous to say, KU don't have provision for sangha and unions in his constitution.. Change it when we are going to change our national constitution..
God bless KU

Mr AP 98

he he... you want just 5 names..what you mean by fired? there is no such provision of firing someone like in USA. In USA companies have right to hire or fire.. but in deveoping world you must have strong reason rather than saying I don't like them.... so these peoples are fired indirectly by compelling to resign..
There are dozens of peoples.....best academicians in Nepal..
Mechanical eng. computer eng. electronics eng.. had many best on it's history, but they were compelled to leave.
He he.. whole bunch of faculties from pharmacy..
I guess few years back, whole faculties from it's medical school..
Still you want just five heads..
We need democracy in KU

To concerned people about KU,
I know about KUMS and how it started. Many of the founders of KUMS had to leave and only handful of them stayed. KUMS has been compared to Janaki; it has a lot of potential but nepotism and cunning dealings of Suresh Raj Sharma, Sitaram Adhikary, Ram Kantha, Nastu Sharma and Narendra Rana that drove out Arjun Karki has put an end of a promising project.

If you think KU is corrupt; you should see Dhulikhel Hospital, which has a grandiose title of KU Teaching Hospital is a dictatorship run by Ram Kantha and his Personal Assistant, Nastu Sharma. Any person who has worked at this hospital will tell you it is autocratic and not many have left with disgust.
Even more, KUTH should be part of KU but KUTH is dictating KU and these mafia will eventually take over KU which should have been named Bel Prasad University anyway. That name is more accurate than the nation's capital.

May be there are Nepotism, they hire their son daughters and in laws at the time when there were nobody who wanted to take risk with this new job and teaching classes. Hey.... teaching is not just a job, teaching ability is a god-gift. Even if you know the subject matter, it needs guts and dares to stand in front of students for an hour. As far as I know they hire their son because he was available at the time KU was just establishing. Example, is Bhola sir, heard he was working on a good post at NCCN and they requested him a lot before Bhola sir finally agreed to serve KU. Now propaganda says, KU offered job to Bhola sir as he is a neighbor of Suresh raj sharma or sita ram adhikary. That does not make any sense.
My point, whatever is happening is good as every institution should be transparent. yeah, they should in this democratic culture. BUT, that does not mean Name calling to one of the respected person of nation. Suresh Raj Sharma did not become VC by winning any election or by any honorary post given by King or PM or whatever. He is at this position by his own hardship.
Regarding nepotism and corruption,...... Will you give me a name of any organization at least in Nepal which is not free from it?????. That does not mean I am supporting these, but why only KU? why?.......... and WHY NOWWWW?....... why now? why not some 5 years before?????
Because now is the time to change VC post and DR. SURENDRA RAJ KAFLE is trying till death to be VC this time. And he and his company are spreading propaganda so that they will not continue VC post for SUresh R sharma again....... OR at least Registrar post.
The Blog operator of [changeinku.blogspot.com] is Dr. Sameer mani dixit, and he is angry because his fast-friend Boris Niraoula was fired for some unknown reason.
But the conclusion is this is not going good. They have started strikes and pen downs, which will only harm students and ....only students.

Dr. Sameer Dixit is a very talented teacher and researcher, one who could even be a future VC so in response to KUIan, he is not just defending his friend Boris but also KU from being an outdated monarchy who has King like Suresh Raj Sharma and his lynchpin, Sitaram and heir like Ram Kantha and his crony Nastu Sharma. Good luck to brave people like Sameer Dixit I say, if he has the courage to host a website like changeinku - it is just like revolution that took place in Nepal and also needs to happen in KU

Nepalese people have always acted like bhedas to flattering and grandiose speeched such as those by Suresh Raj Sharma: Take for instance when he says KU will do world class research - who does not agree with this? But the truth is KU does not support research and it must be the only university in the world where an administrater (Sitaram the Registrar) is the head of research committee. Suresh Raj can not fool all the people all the time. The bottleneck has exploded now and yes, Surendra Kafle might benefit from this but it has been waiting for a long time now. KUMS founders such as Dr. Arjun Karki, Dr. Saroj Dhital and Dr. Sharad Onta will tell you what Suresh Raj Sharma is really like in words and actions.

Hey Kuien,

I don't think Mr Bhola thapa got the gob beacuse of his capability. He is very very rude person and does not know how to teach. I had very bad experience with Bhola. He is nasty and foolish person. Get rid of him.

Hello Libra2005
He.he he he.... I know he really is. I too have some bad experiences with Bhola Thapa. But that does not mean his moral are bad, his dedication towards KU is bad. Lucky me, I do not have to take any classes with him but heard a lot from my friends. But even then, here and there, in expos etc. he was rude. But heard he has made ME department Lab very good now. At least I will take him positively. But you know why I am giving his example , right? I my self does not like nepotism and favorism in KU anymore but still making blogs and name calling, giving MASALA articles to press, and now TEACHERS'S STRIKE that will not help. Hey, BTW Do you know one who is also a key player in this "Hate Suresh Raj Sharma" group???..... he is Dhaneshwor Mishra... if you know him, you can guess what short of game is going on over there.
Common, I believe there is still some legal grounds leftover in Nepal. Imagine, King Gyanendra himslef looks like to be presented in front of court today or tomorrow, then why are you afraid of going to court??. Are you afraid of Radheyshyam adhikari? or you are afraid because your are confused yourself??
Regarding Dr. Sameer, heard he is a very good researcher.

I think KU is in a long haul of troubles with crops of bad apples after the present VC be they Surendra Kafle or Ram Kantha, Nastu Sharma, Subodh Sharma, Bhola Thapa and others like them. I cannot wait till new generation like Dr. Sameer take over. Good luck to him.
And the actions teachers are taking does not defame KU because these actions can save KU because inaction would mean letting KU become a joke because serious people have already assessed VC's grandiose claims and the real capacity of KU.

RajaH,
Pushpa Raj and Bhadraman are really bouncers for manipulative people like Suresh Raj and Sitaram. On their own, they are honest, hardworking but not competent enough to go far by themselves. Both of them would not have got to their positions, by their own merits.

Also, you will see these cronies work in pairs such as Suresh Raj and Sitaram; Ram Kantha and Nastu; Subodh and Roshan. Thats why decent people like RBC and Panna will never make it. With each generation, these cronies become more manipulative and dangerous for the rest of the hard working academics. You should just talk to any staff of Dhulikhel Hospital to see what I mean.

Many people have a naive picture KU has made positive contributions to education in Nepal. In Medicine and Engineering, it has made no strides apart from churning out new products without paying heed to their quality. Look at the way they gave affiliation to 5 medical colleges without having any clue about medical education. Suresh Raj and his buddies were paid handsomely by Manipal and other Indian backers of these medical colleges. All they needed was KU to give certificates. What Suresh Raj has achieved is to hang on to power by pleasing powerful financial backers and their political buddies in Nepal to grant these affiliations. KUMS started well but again they were scared of the success and independence of KUMS which was built by Dr. Arjun Karki. So they got rid of him and replaced him with Ram Kantha and Nastu Sharma. Just look at who is left in KUMS now and compare them with Dr. Arjun Karki, Dr. Saroj Dhital, Dr. Sharad Onta, Dr. Shambhu Upadhya, Dr. Ganesh, Dr. Kedar Baral; who were forced to leave. Can you name one person in KUMS, who is as competent as them? Just talk to any student of KUMS and you will realize it has become a joke.

While KU is discredited in the history of medicine and engineering in Nepal; the students who graduated from KU have managed to struggle on and achieve notable success. This is because, KU has attracted the top students in the country who also work hard because their parents have to pay exorbitant fees. What the KU products have managed to do is inspite of KU and not because of it. I have met KU products in Nepal and US and all have got to their positions because of their hard work. I have told them frankly they would have got further with TU.
The faculty of medicine is headed by a narcotic old man Rana who has no clue about education. He is just a yes man of Suresh Raj. The faculty of engineering has no other than Bhola Thapa. Compare any private medical school or engineering school in Nepal to KU, you will see my point.
Intermittently, brilliant staff have joined KU in both medicine and engineering because they thought KU would be the best place to work in Nepal. They soon find the malpractice of Dr. Rana, Dr. Ram Kantha, Dr. Nastu Sharma and others like them make it intolerable for them to work - ask Dr. Arjun Karki, Dr. Saroj Dhital, Dr. Sharad Onta, Dr. Shambhu Upadhya, Dr. Kedar Baral, Dr. Ganesh Dangal and others.
I think good, hard working students succeed any where and this has been the case of KU. So, it is high time that old students of KU capture the banner from cronies like Suresh Raj, Sitaram, Ram Kantha, Nastu Sharma and make KU a public institution rather than the Dhulikhel Plc.

Why does KU look better than TU?
KU is the only university I know in which the same teacher that teach the courses, set the exam questions for the students. For example, KUMS students get questions from their teacher and 100% of them pass whereas all other medical colleges of KU are examined by external examiners. Is it any wonder? I am not attacking KUMS students but they would benefit from a fairer system in the long run. They should sit the same exams as other medical colleges. KU propaganda is KUMS is using PBL method. So, if PBL is so good, why cann't KUMS students compete with the others from traditional backgrounds?

Many people know about the support KUMS had from Harvard University's Professor Cliff Tabin; whose love for Nepal led him to sponsor about fifty Americans to come and teach in KUMS. KU benefitted a lot from this contact with Harvard. Then what happens? KU got scared of the independence of KUMS run by Dr. Arjun Karki. Suresh Raj and Sitaram with the help of Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma quickly put and end to the success of KUMS. Now Samir28 even compared KUMS with Janaki when with Dr. Arjun Karki, KUMS was about to be the top medical college in Nepal. They have replaced Dr. Karki with Dr. Chet Raj Pant a man who does not know any thing about medical education. Dr. Chet Raj Pant and several doctors from B & B Hospital became Professors overnight in one of the biggest scandals in the history of medical education in Nepal.
No one argues that Dr. Pant is an experienced opthalmologist and Dr. Jagdish Lal Baidya is a very succesful surgeon but what makes them qualifed to be professors. What publications do they have to fulfill the criteria to become professors in even a minor medical college?
What Suresh Raj has managed to do is commercialize education in the true sense: You pay good money to study and we will sell you certificates by our commercial teachers.

With the fees of KUMS students, Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and Dr. Nastu Sharma have been sending their cronies like Dr. Suman Tamrakar and Dr. Arun Sedai for postgraduate studies in Manipal. In particular, these two were chosen because they said few things against Dr. Arjun Karki to please KU. Another person to benefit most from Dr. Ram Kantha and Dr. Nastu Sharma has been Sujan Babu Marahatta who was sent on full pay for Masters to Mahidol University in Bangkok for two years. He had served faithfully by enrolling students chosen by Suresh Raj Sharma and Nastu Sharma for the nursing courses in Dhulikhel Medical Institute. Sujan Marahatta was not qualified to be deputy head of DMI but he was reliable enough for Suresh Raj and Nastu Sharmas. To succeed in KU, KUTH you must learn from Sujan Marahatta. Ask anybody in Dhulikhel Hospital.
