There should be instruction inside the cd case,or click on upgrade as far i am concerned there should be something that should say upgrade to win7. insert the disc, click on upgrade. put in the key. and I think it should work. It worked for me. Didnt pay 34 dollars. I dont know if it is better than vista or not, it will take time to decide on that. hope this is good version.

1. Insert your Windows 7 DVD in the optical (CD/DVD) drive. Click Install Now option once you see the screen. If you have disabled autorun, open the root of the DVD drive (Windows 7 DVD) and run setup.exe file.

Windows7upgrade

2.  Once you run the setup, you will see two options:

* Check compatibility online

* Install Now

Windows7upgrade_install_Windows

3. In the next screen, you will see two options:

* Go online to get the latest update for installation

* Do not get the latest updates for installation

install windows 7 go online option

If you have the latest version of Windows 7, then you need not to check for updates. You can select Do not check for updates if you wish to check for updates post upgrade process.

4. Accept the license agreement (I accept the license agreement) and click Next to continue the procedure.

Windows7upgarde

5. In the next screen again you will see two options:

* Upgrade

* Custom

Windows_7_upgrade

Here you need to select Upgrade option to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Click Next.

6. Once again, Windows will check for the compatibility and will generate the report. If Windows finds any compatibility problems, it will display the problem and will save the report to the desktop. If no incompatibilities are found, Windows 7 Setup will proceed without further interaction

From here onwards, you need to follow the default Windows Installation Procedure

Note

If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only upgrade to a 32-bit version of Windows 7. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Otherwise, you'll need to use the Custom option to install Windows 7.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit installation discs are included in the Windows 7 package. 64-bit operating systems can handle large amounts of memory—typically 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM) or more—more efficiently than 32-bit operating systems. However, not all computers are 64-bit capable.

To find out which Windows 7 installation disc you can use, do the following:

  1. Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Performance Information and Tools.

  2. Click View and print details.

  3. Under System, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running next to System type, and, next to 64-bit capable, whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows.

Hope this help

Windows 7 is great.
I got one from MSDN Academic Alliance for free.
It is faster than Vista but little bit slower than XP.

Usually, those 29.99 price is just a upgrade price. And this is not a market price where u buy in retail stores. It can be bought in that price online, Maybe?....I am not sure. But chcek your college Computer stores or their online Software download sites. They are always cheap, and is only given to students. I usually find someone to get one for me from the college. I just found out that UTA is selling for 34.99 to their students. Also, As _Nepali has mentioned you can get DVD or download online for free if ur college participates on MSDN Academic Alliance programme. North Lake College participates on this programme and I found out that they usually give a DVD to take home and install. This is the location information @ T225 building.

Guys, can u share ur experinece during the Upgrade as lady from North Lake COllege warned me --- Now I am thinking whether to do upgrade or not. Basically she told me to keep all the backups of documents and even my others programmes and software too. I thought this is just a upgrade process, not a new installation, so it shouldn't interfer with all things that I alreday have in my computer.

I was one of the  Windows 7(R) House party winner and got the merchandise way before it was released to the world. (Received on Oct 18) The package included 1 signature edition of  Windows 7(R)  and other party decorative stuffs. But, I'm a Mac User! I gave it to one of my friend and he says its awesome.

@STUPIDA like i said it came out recently for public so all the software drivers may not be out. like in my case i got windows 7 pro from MSDN Academic Alliance. i got month before it was out for public. i usually wait for couple months after new OS is out but this time i forgot to wait and also i was tired with vista. So in my case my inbuilt microphone doesnt work at this moment cuz HP hasn't released windows 7 drivers. they will probably do it soon.  Beside that i dont find any problem with windows 7. i like it better than vista. just make sure you have recovery disk of your vista so if you dont like windows 7 you can switch back to vista or you can also do a partition and assign like 70-100 gb for windows 7 and have both OS on your computer and later if you like Windows  7 you can delete the other partition  & or vice versa.

Upgrading to Windows 7

XP to Win 7

If you’re upgrading from Windows XP, you’ll need to do a clean install of Windows 7. You’ll have to reinstall your programs. Your data will be wiped off the hard drive. So, back it up.

Vista to Win 7

If you have a Vista machine, you can do an in-place upgrade. You dont have to reinstall your programs, and your data shouldn’t be affected. However, there are some Consideration -

First, if you switch from 32- to 64-bit or vice versa, a clean install is needed.

Whether you need a clean install or not, play it safe. Back up your data before installing Windows 7.

It is always good idea to backup all your data and programs - be in safe side backup everything rather than to feel sorry later .

You don't lose any documents while installing the software, but it may take a while to download and install the program( may be more than 5 hrs). You may lose your illegally obtained software ( I'm not sure in this case).
Here is one of  the features of Windows 7-
