म त खुसी छु अमेरिकामा

डिभी भर्ने ८० रूपैयाँ गोजिमा थिएन

मैले २०६३ सालमा एसएलसी दिएको हुँ। फस्ट डिभिजनका लागि १ नं पुगेको थिएन। एक नम्वर बढी आएको भए फस्टडिभिजन भन्न पाइन्थ्यो। यो कुरा मेरा लागि मात्र होइन मेरो परिवारका लागि चिन्ताकै विषय बन्यो।

पद्मोदय पब्लीक नमुना उच्च माध्यामिक विद्यालय दाङवाट २०६५ मा प्लस टू सकाए त्यो पनि दोस्रो डिभिजनमा। २०६६ तिर काठमाडौं पढन भनेर आएको हुँ। पढाइभन्दा बढ्ता राजनीति गर्छन काठमाडौंका कलेजहरू। शंकरदेवमा भर्ना भए। कीर्तिपुरको पाँगामा डेरा थियो। महिनाको १६ सय तिनुपर्थ्यो। काठमाडौं बसमाइमा जम्मा जम्मी ६ हजार लाग्थ्यो महिनाको। बाबाको सबै कमाई मलाईनै ठिक्क हुन थाल्यो। र, सँगै काठमाडौंको राजनीतिले पनि मलाई छोयो। स्नातकका पाँचवटा विषयमा २ वटामा फेल भए। बाबाले सोचेजस्तो मैले पढाइ राम्रो गर्न सकिनँ।

५ जना छोराछोरीलाई प्राविको शिक्षकको जागीरले कसरी धान्न सक्थ्यो। सल्यानवाट बाबा दाङ सर्नु भएको हो। त्यसैले दाङमा ३ कोठाको एक घर वाहेक अन्य कुनै सम्पत्ति छैन। श्रीलक्ष्मी प्राविका शिक्षक हुनुहुन्थ्यो बाबा। म बुझ्ने हुँदा बाबाको तलव ४ हजार थियो। सवैलाई मुखमा माड हाल्नै पर्‍यो। त्यसैले दिदीबहिनीलाई एसएलसीभन्दा बढी पढाउन सक्नुभएन।

घरका समस्या झन बढ्न थाल्यो। यस्तो अवस्था आएपछि मैले अब पढाइ छाडेर दाङतिरै ब्यापार गर्ने विचार गरे। त्यसका लागि मसँग पैसा पनि थिएन। बाबासँग पनि थिएन। सम्पत्तिको नाममा भएको एउटा घरलाई बैंकमा धितो राखेर पैसा जुटाउने निर्णय गरेँ। त्यो बेला मलाई कम्तीक झगडा गर्नु परेको थिएन आमा बाबा र दिदी बहीनीसँग।

उतिवेलाको वागेश्वरी विकास बैंकले ४ लाख दियो। १८ प्रतिशत ब्याजमा ४ वर्षभित्र सबै चुक्ता गर्न पर्ने कवुलनामा गरेँ। बाबाले मास्टरको जागीरबाट बनाएको घरलाई मैले बैंकमा बुझाएँ। र, तुलसीपुरमा कम्प्युटर इन्स्च्युट खोले।

सुरूमा इन्टिच्युट राम्रै चलेको थियो। तर, अत्याधिक लोडसेडिङका कारण ब्यापार धरासायि हुन थाल्यो। १६ देखि १८ घण्टासम्म विजुली नभएपछि जेनेरेटर चाहियो। अर्को खर्च।  नेपालमा हुँदा मैले बिसौ चोटी टाउको बजारेको छु, मर्न मात्र सकेको थिइन। ३ महिनाको २७ हजार बैकलाई बुझाउनु पर्थ्यो। महिना बित्न नपाउदै फोन आउथ्यो, बाबाको घर धितो राखेर बाबाकै तलबवाट बैंकको ऋण तिर्नुपर्दा मलाई कम्ति पिडा भएको थिएन। त्यो मलाई मात्र थाहा छ। एक त गरिब त्यसमाथि ऋण अब म डुबिसकेको थिएँ।

४ लाख ऋन गरेर सुरु गरेको ब्यापारले महिनाको ३ हजार पनि दिन नसकेपछि बोडिङ स्कुलमा कम्प्युटर सिकाउन थाले। ३ हजार महिनाको तलव थियो। यो कामबाट पनि पार पाउने देखिनँ। अब म सँग विदेश जानुको विकल्प थिएन।

कामको खोजीमा विदेश जाने तयारी गर्न थालेँ। मित्र जीतबहादुर मलेसियामा इलेक्ट्रोकिन कम्पनीमा काम गर्न गएका थिए। साथीले उतै आउन भन्दै थिए। पासपोर्ट बनाउने ध्याउन्नमा लागेँ। त्यसका लागि पनि उत्तिकै दुःख।

जन्मेको सल्यान, वसाइ सराइ दाङमा। नेपाली भएर पनि पासपोर्ट बनाउन जादा पाएको सास्ती झन विरक्त लाग्दो थियो। नागरिकता खल्तीमा बोँकेर हिड्दा पनि पासपोर्ट बनाउन बाजेको बिहे देखिन्छ।

कहिले काहि डिभि परेर अमेरीका पुगेको साथीले भन्थ्यो। डिभि पर्न सक्छ भर केटा। डिभिको अवसर पनि म छोडने अवस्थामा थिइन। तर, डिभि भर्नका लागि चाहिने ८० रुपैयासम्म खल्तीमा थिएन। त्यसैले फोनको क्यामरा प्रयोग गरेर डिभि भरेको हुँ।

सबैले डिभिको रिजल्ट आयो भन्थे, खै कतासम्म आइपुगेको थियो। मैले वास्ता गरीनँ। कारण थियो, मैले मोबाइलले खिचेको फोटोले डिभि भरेको थिएँ। डिभिको रिजल्ट मे महिनाको १ तारिकमा आएको थियो। तर, १३ दिनपछि मे १४ मा रिजल्ट हेरेँ बिस्वासै लागेन। दिदीको घर नजिकै थियो दौडिँदै त्यता गएँ भिनाजु त खुसी भए दाइले पत्याएन। यस्तो फेक थेरै आउँछ भन्यो। हिमाल एकेडेमी तुलसीपुरको प्रिन्सीपल मधुसुदन केसीले अग्रेजीलाई राम्ररी नेपालीमा उल्था गरिदिए मेरो खुसीको सीमा रहेन।

काठमाडौंमा पुगेर सवै कागजातको तयारी गरे। पैसा जुटाउन कम सास्ती भोग्न परेन। अमेरिका जान लागेको भनेपछि धेरैले पत्याए। भिसा लाग्यो। अब अमेरिका जाने टिकटको पैसा कसरी खोज्ने अर्को टन्टा थियो। कसैले नदेखेको बेला भगवानले देख्दो रैछन्। सोचेभन्दा एकलाख रूपैयाँ बढी नै जम्मा भयो अझै एकजना दाईले कति पुगेको छैन लिन लमही आइज भन्दै हुनुहुन्थ्यो। डिभीका लागि फोटो खिच्ने ८० रुपैयाँ नभएको मान्छे म। अमेरीका उडने वेलासम्म आठलाख जम्मा भयो।

कहिल्यै प्लेन नचढेको मान्छे। अमेरिका पुगुन्जेलसम्म मैले प्लेनभित्रको मेसो पाइन। सिङगापुर र रूसको मस्कोमा ट्रान्जिट थियो प्लेन चेन्ज कसरी गर्न सके अहिले अचम्म लाग्छ।

करिब ३५ घण्टाको उडानपछि जर्जवाश इन्टरनेसनल एरपोर्ट ह्युसटनमा अवतरण गरेँ गएको डिसेम्वरमा।

गाउँको स्कुलमा पुढेको हुँ म।  अग्रेजी मुस्कीलले पास गरेको हुँ। र, अमेरीका पुगेपछि मलाई अंग्रेजी बुझ्न वाहेक अन्य कुनै कुराको दुःख छ जस्तो लाग्दैन।

साथीको सहयोगले भारतीय ब्यापारीको ग्यास स्टेसनमा काम पाएको छु। महिनामा दुई हजार डलर तलब आउँछ। ७ सय जति खर्च हुन्छ। बाँकि बचाउँछु। मलाई लाग्छ अमेरिकामा छिरेका सबै नेपालीले कम्तीमा पनि महिनाको १५ सय बचाउँछन्, म जस्तै सानो तिनो काम गर्नेले।

सामान्य रजिष्टरसम्म चलाउन नजानेको मान्छे। अहिले धेरै कुरा सिकेको छु। नेपालमा हजार ठक्कर खाएको मान्छे, अमेरिकाको दुःख मलाई केहि पनि लागेको छैन। काम नगरेर बसेका नेपालीहरुका लागि मात्र दुःख हो अमेरीकामा।

मेरो ड्युटि ग्यास स्टेसनमामा रातिको १२ बजेबाट सुरुहुन्छ र बिहानको ७ बजे सकिन्छ, मेरो काम मलाई सजिलो लाग्छ। दिनमा काम गरेपनि रातमा काम गरेपनि मेरो कामले मलाई पाल्छ, मेरो गरिब परिवारको मुखमा विस्तारै खुसी बाड्न थालेको छु। त्यसैले मेरो काम मेरो भगवान हो।

म कामलाई सम्मान गर्छु। हामी नेपालीहरु काममा बिभेद राख्छौ। यो सानो काम मैले गर्न हुँदैन भन्छौं। यहाँ आएर कति नेपालीहरु डिप्रेसनको सिकार भए भन्ने कुरा समाचारहरुमा देख्छु, त्यसको कारण कामको सम्मान गर्न नसक्नु नै हो कि जस्तो लाग्छ।

जसले म नेपालमा हलानो र फलानो थिए भन्दै धाक र रवाफ देखाउँछन् उनीहरुलाइै नै डिप्रेसन हुने हो।

कामलाई सम्मान गरेर बाँच्नेहरुका लागि यो देश स्वर्ग हो जस्तो लाग्छ। जसले नेपालमा दुःख देखेको छैन त्यस्तालाई यहाँ टिक्न केहि महिनासम्म गारो नै होला।

अमेरिकामा फलेका हरिया डलर टिप्न आउनेहरु रूखको फेदमै बसेर डिप्रेसनको सिकार बन्छन् र कामको सम्मान गर्नेहरुले डलर टिप्छन्। सबैं नेपालीहरुले अमेरिकामा दुःख छ भनेको सुन्छु, तर, फर्केको कोहि देखेको छैन। सायदै सबै झुटो बोल्छन् क्यारे।

मिडियाहरुमा नराम्रा समाचार मात्रै आउँछन् राम्रा सामचारले स्थान पाउँदैनन्। समाजमा नराम्राभन्दा राम्रा कुरा नै बढि छन्। तर, मिडियामा नराम्रा कुरा मात्रै देखिने हुँदा सबै नराम्रो छकी जस्तो देखिन्छ।

नेपालमा गरेका सारा दुःख सम्झने हो भने अमेरीका मलाई स्वर्ग जस्तो लाग्यो। यहाँ नेपालमा जस्तो काममा गएर ठग्न पाइँदैन। काममा पुगेपछि काम नै गर्नुपर्छ। हामी नेपालीले ठगेरै काम गरेको बानी त्यसैले अमेरिकामा दिग्दारी लाग्दो हो शायद।

I have a respect for this guy! He came from so poverty that he appreciates his newfound wealth. He is glad his family has improved now. I know he did not come here as a student and gone through all the hell just to get a degree. i do not think he carries a Health insurance as he works in a dhoti's shop. Inagine what would happen if he become sick of a major illness. Not carrying a Health insurance will make you a bankrupt in this country. Even so called the best health insurance does not cover nothing n they expect you to pay so much out of pocket cost. Its not just work, There are so many reasons one could go in depression such as health,unemployment, stress, relationship ,and family problems n so on! God bless him!!

Wow .what an honest and inspiring story.This resonates with stories that many of us bring with us being a young Nepali citizen.I am happy for you and to all the others who never give up.

I Think these two Lines are 100% true . I feel the same . I think this is the first article I read so far about People getting Optimistic towards America.

I respect this guy and his boldness to tell his story publicly. It's inspiring for many but nobody gets to be judgemental. Every person has his own story in life. Without walking in their shoe, we can't come to a conclusion about anybody. Couple of days ago, I had read a story about a depressed family from Nepal after migrating to the US. People made their own assumptions and blamed him for being incapable of harvesting USA's resourses. His story is different. This guy's story is different.
Bottomline: Their is pain everywhere and there is happiness everywhere. People have their own stories and it is a large factor responsible for the outcome.

I salute to your simplistic and honest sounding portrayal of your view of life
His story resonates with many who have migrated to US (whatever the original reason was) and were willing to go through the days of hardships. Almost every student coming here goes through hassles related to off campus work (may be not 100%), then H1B, very often consultancies and then green card.
It's a lot of perseverance being an immigrant.

Kudos to the guy who found USA as his dream come true place.

USA is still a land of opportunity for people like him. If you really struggled for almost everything back in Nepal and you have a willingness/determination to work hard USA could still be a great source of happiness for you.

But if you already had a decent lifestyle in Nepal, it might not so much be a land of happiness for you anymore. How USA makes you happy is totally dependent on what you need/want out of life and where you stand economically/financially/socially back in Nepal.

It totally depends on what level of expectation you had out of yourself when provided the opportunity to migrate. Depression seeps in without notice, when your opinion of yourself declines to a much lower level and your expectations don't look like materializing anytime soon. People who tend to know and believe that, the extent of extreme wealth or other possibilities this land provides are attainable but fail to make that a reality, tend to get depressed. Depression is result of unfulfilled expectations. Expectation comes from how complex or simple the thinking process of a person is. The Guy who is happy and wrote the article probably did not have higher expectation than what he is doing for this stage of his life right now. He is doing pretty well for himself. That is why he is happy. Nobody is same in the level of complexity of their thoughts, thus thought process and expectations differ from person to person across people of different socio-economic background. One's measurement of success for happiness may not fit the other. This is all relative.

Great story and motivation for the rest of hardworking people but 100% agree with sidster. Post your stories if you have similar.

Looks like this guy don't drive ( not needed I guess) but also don't pay for health insurance. his expense is only 700 a month which is rent plus food obviously. Once he gets seriously ill ( god forbid) I think there will be different point of view and will know what usa is all about. i wish nothing but good luck!!
