Kathmandu, Nepal. The Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala has declared a new law into effect in the formerly devout hindu country.

From Thursday, only female staff will be able to sell female contraceptive pills or devices at pharmacies in Nepal, ending decades of awkwardness in the conservative Nepalese society where sex is considered a taboo.

"I and many other women like me were always embarrassed to walk into pharmacies because men were selling the goods," said Nepali shopper Priyanka Karki.

She said that in the past she often bought the wrong contraceptive "because I was sensitive about explaining what I wanted to a man."

Even Namrata Shrestha added "It was embarassing to explain to a male attendant about the tampon or the birth control ring or the spermicide foaming pills and gels."

An official decree issued by Prime Minister Koirala gives pharmacy owners six months to add a female attendant in their shops.

The ban on male staff is to be extended to cosmetics shops from July.

"This is an order from the PM," Labour Minister Sarita Giri told Sajha Onion claiming that this law will help in reducing lot of unwanted pregnancies, child mortality and even the increasing population of the country.
