Hi Guys,

I need some advice. I am currently in OPT (STEM). I have two job offers for postdoc positions (both academic). Both are equally good institutions. One employer (say A) is offering J1 Visa only whereas other (say B) is ready to sponsor H1B. But the pay scale of A is almost as double as offered by B. I understand the basic difference and advantages/disadvantages of both visa category and it also depends upon person’s preference. I have to decide soon and now I am confused about which offer I should accept. I would appreciate if you could share your experience and/or provide some advice in this regard.

Thank you in advance.

Cheers,

Since both are Academic Institution I would Prefer J1.

1.Tax Saving
2. Pay is more
3. 18 Months OPT (you can work outside your institution).

Since the H1-B from Academic Field is non transferable ( can't be transferred if you need to work outside.) + Social Security + medicare!!

For me I would have taken J1!!

From my personal viewpoint, I would go for H1B

J1:
Tax saving yes - but after 2 years you will be paying more tax than H1B
Limited visa - J1 visa is for limited time only - it is very fuzzy and difficult to renew unless you go back to the home country, stay for 1 year and reapply.

H1
You have to pay tax
Easy for filing Green Card - can file as soon as you file H1B - dual intent

So, if you are planning to get a green card in future, I would strongly suggest you to go with H1B.

That's my 2 cents
