Udit Narayan's Indian citizenship questioned

Thu, Jan 15 02:16 PM

Mumbai, Jan 15 (IANS) No sooner had singer Udit Narayan's name been mentioned among the possible candidates for the Padma Shri this year, he was accused of not being an Indian citizen and therefore not eligible for the civilian honour.

But the singer - who according to some reports was born in Raj Biraj town of Saptari district in southern Nepal - says that he was born in Bihar.

'They are out to malign me and stop me from being given the recognition that the government thinks I deserve by saying I am not an Indian. They say I was born in Nepal, but that's completely false. I was born in a village called Baisi on the Supaul district of Bihar in 1955 at my maternal grandparents' home,' Udit told IANS.

He sees this is an attempt to debar him from the Padma Shri.

'I've been singing for 40 years. I'm as Indian as can be. I've never been involved in any scandal or controversy. The only time I did get into a scandal it was in my own district and engineered by my own Bihari brothers. I'm the most non-controversial guy around,' said Udit, who landed in a controversy when Ranjana Jha, who claimed to be his first wife, challenged his marriage with Deepa.

'They're angry with me because they think I haven't done anything for Bihar. Even during the floods last year I made a donation of Rs.5 lakhs (Rs.500,000). I don't know why people are out to get me? Maybe people are jealous. They've no reason to be. I'm not singing that many songs any more. After you sing for 30 years, you do tend to slow down and take it easy. Now I want to watch my son Aditya's career,' he said.

Aditya, in fact, has composed some songs that he wants Udit to sing.

'I'd be honoured to sing for my own son. It's the proudest moment for any father. We're a small family - me, my wife and son. I just wish people wouldn't try to dampen our spirits.'

Isn't it sad that even after being such a renowned singer for so many years, he always have to give justification about his nationality? I wish he was open about it right from the beginning. Sometimes he says he is Nepali and sometimes he says he is Indian. Does it make you Indian by being born in India? If you are born in Nepal, it does not make you a Nepali, does it? Personally, I feel that Udit is such a coward for being so scared and confused about his nationality. What is the use of all the fame when he is not clear where he belongs. It is sad.

The situation with Udit is entirely different, once you are a US citizen, you do not have to say anything, it is called naturalization and you can tell everyone that you were from Nepal, there would not be any lying needed anywhere. If dual citizenship applies in Nepal, you can claim that also but then just because you are US citizen or you work and live in US, will you stop saying where you are from? If you say so then you are no better that Udit Narayan.

I have never liked him or his family for this dual nature, you could very well be a Nepali and live in India and make a living there. Even Mala Sighna tell everyone that she is from Nepali origin and did not lie that fact. My problem is that why does he had to lie to both India and Nepal all the time. I cannot imagine living such a life of fear. There is another very famous arrtist - Laxman Shrestha, photographer - Rakash Shrestha - they all live and work in Mumbai but proudly say they are Nepali.

I remember one interview with Udit Narayan in Mumbai - when he was asked why he did not participate in NRN conference, he just gave some stupid answers like Maoists are there in Nepal and he is scared to go there that they might kill him or something.

Why do we want to debate with people like him, in face he should just be left to be called a Indian  if he so loved to be Indian, why do Nepali people like to call him Nepali and give all the respect i do not understand. If he does not acknowledge Nepal then Nepal should not acknowledge him as well.
