Air safety
Going on holiday?

Planes crash more frequently in some places than others
Apr 25th 2007
From Economist.com

Russia and other former Soviet states had the worst air-safety record in 2006, according to the International Air Transport Association's annual safety report. This measures “hull-losses” (accidents resulting in write-offs) for both passenger and cargo aircraft. While the world average was one accident in 1.5m flights, the former Soviet region had over 12 times as many. In contrast, some regions, such as north Asia, were accident-free. Reassuringly for the holiday-maker, cargo aircraft account for 24% of accidents but only 4% of departures. Overall, the total number of accidents fell to 77 from 111 in 2005.

AC's Boeings grounded

BY KRISHNA REGMI

KATHMANDU, April 25 - Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) cancelled all but one of its international flights on Tuesday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded, after both of its Boeing-757 aircraft were grounded due to technical snags.

After conducting the first flight to New Delhi, one aircraft -- Boeing-757-9N-ACB could not return to Kathmandu, as it faced a technical glitch in its circuit breaker while starting its engines.

Another Boeing-757-9N-ACA has been grounded at Tribhuvan International Airport since Monday after NAC's maintenance staff found problems in its flaps during routine inspection. "The aircraft was grounded after serious cracks were traced in the aircraft's flaps," said BBS Kansakar, chief of NAC's Engineering Division. Since the repair is not possible here, NAC management is planning to ferry the aircraft to Brunei at the earliest,

he added.

A number of passengers in New Delhi, Hong Kong, and Osaka, Japan have been stranded as NAC had scheduled flights to those destinations today.

Even though one aircraft, which is currently in New Delhi, is expected to return to operation on Wednesday, the next one will resume services only after a week after completion of repair at Brunei. As a result, NAC's several flights are expected to be affected in the coming week.

“We are trying to come up with a new schedule,” said B P Basyal, marketing director of NAC.

Technical snags in the state owned airlines occurred at a time when all international airlines flying to Nepal are packed. This has hampered travel schedules of both foreign tourists and locals resulting in further erosion of the national flag carrier's credibility. NAC is depending on over two-decade old twin Boeing-757s to fly to 10 destinations in seven countries.

IMI - you are quick to politicize everything. Still sour, eh? Spin aside, NAC sucks and has been going down the drain for the last 25 years much of which started in the late 80s. I say it's high time to privatize it and get the state out of such industries.

I was once returning to KTM from Pokhara with a foreign friend of mine. As we were waiting for our departure, he asked if the airline (Necon Air) had a lot of crashes in the past. Stupid me, I told him the fact that it had once crashed while approaching KTM from Pokhara. Sure enough, he looked scared, and furthermore it was heavily raining that morning. He looked a little better after I assured him that a different type of aircraft was involved in that accident. I hope he did not notice the Necon Air Avro parked not so far from the apron. It had been grounded there for quite a while after skidding past the runway.

Five years prior to that, an Everest Air aircraft had returned to KTM to make an emergency landing after the landing gear failed while approaching Bhadrapur. The plane landed on its belly over a bed of foam at KTM. I had watched the landing on the NTV news. I was leaving for Pokhara the next morning with two of my foreign friends, and we were to fly to Jomsom the day after on Everest. Luckily, they were not watching the news. I just prayed and prayed that they would not know the news and cancel the trip because of it. I was also worried about the possibility of our flight being cancelled due to aircraft shortage. Luckily, they did not know about the incident, and we did manage to fly to Jomsom albeit after a three hour delay.

Sndy..I hope you are not going to Nepal?
hehehe let me scare you bitmore ..:D

KTM airport is one of the most difficult airport in the world for pilots to take off and land.
Reasons, The size of the mountains and the distance of the mountains from the airport. From 14k ft planes jumps to land. And planes have only so much time to attain that kind of height to pass over the mountains.therefore only experienced pilots are given this responsiblity.
But there is nothing to scared of.
Airways is still the safest medium of trasportation in the world.

Imagine what your reaction will be when you see this when you look out your window at 30,000 feet.

I lost my dear ones in one of such crashes :(....i vividly remember the moment when my head denied to believe what my ears heard....it gives me creeps even after 8 years of the mishap. it will remain as a deep scar throughout my life and even when i seem to have forgotten it, at times it comes in front of my eyes just like it happened an hour or sth ago. :(

By posting above video, my sole purpose was to share how we have to put ourselves through such an inevitable moments. My appologies if it is hurting someone, but again, these facts are unavoidable and we can't ingore them.
That is really sad to hear Loote bro. Its very terrible to lose love ones or somebody we know on such a misfortune. It will remain embedded and hunts forever, I guess that's what makes us human.
Indeed, I am taking flight next week to east coast and so crossing my fingers and putting all trust on machines and electronics. Few years back, while flying over Rockeys in small single engine Beechcraft plane, we got into these series of moderate turbulence that I had hit my head on the ceiling regardless of seatbelt. I was totally in shock and could not slept well that night. I can only imagine how it feels like to be inside jetliner with all those people screaming and you are stuck in this out of control spinning bomb and you can't do anything but wait for the impact.
