Those two guys in the pictures above who are holding the placards... I am afraid for them because they might now be marked men. As it is, the government mouthpiece "gorkhapatra" have already declared rally attenders as "rastrabirodhi". I hope their families will not be persecuted back home. I hope they are not going to Nepal any time soon because they might get nabbed right at the Tribhuvan Bimansthal. You never know in the dictatorship.

GorkhaPatra made Sujata Koirala a main player, that was unfair
to those who spend their own money. I did not like that part.
Otherpart was fine for me. What else could you expect from
state run newspaper. They should not have raised the temperature
of Sujata Koirala as if a real blue start shining so hot.

Kathmandu, May -18 ? Following May 15th?s demonstration organized by the Nepalese community living in United States of America, against the autocracies of King Gyanendra, the members of house of council and foreign relations led by Congressman Berry Burnard have started to look into the matter. According to Congressman Burnard, while United States is actively taking action into establishing democracy in Middle East, it cannot turn its back from democracy being snatched away from other nations. ?[It] would be totally against what America stands for,? Burnard said. Moreover, Burnard also told our correspondent that the council will soon prepare a team of representatives to send to Nepal, to study and analyze the political situation of the country.

Yo Snurp,
heh heh So you expect people to go fight for Democrasy and freedom even if they are suffering from malnuttrition huh ? VERY LOGICAL he heh ! Earlier you called me a monarchist without even reading my post. he he Maybe you do need to go see an eye doc. As I said to Poote... you can to express yourself ..go ahead do it in your way in your own time but DO NOT MISREPRESENT the entire population. There sure are a lotta people who would disagree with what went on in tHat gathering. ITS FUNNY THAT YOU ADVOCATE FREEDOM OF SPEECH BUT BARK AT ME FOR HAVING AN OPINION(just like you I have the freedom and right to disagree too.)
So you are saying that freedom and democracy is more important than survival ? By censoring at least you will live..rather than having to loot, rob, and mug people for survival.
AND ONCE AGAIN BLIND MAN I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT ANY FREAKIN PAPER....

First tell me this, BRC...

So, would you rather that we should have stayed home and shut our mouths for the reasons that you have mentioned? If not, why are you then questioning our rights to express ourselves by attending the rally? Stick to one position.

By placing your faith in KingG to put food on the tables of poor Nepalis, and claiming we first need food and peace before democracy, aren't you then supporting HIM? Why then claim you don't support him along with other leaders?

Please clear the contradictions within yourself first, so that perhaps we can engage in a healthy debate pertaining to our common patriotic needs and desires.

And, BTW, please put forth your own ideas of solutions as snurp has pointed out. Otherwise, your criticism of those who are tyring to do something is as hollow as you uttering meaningless "blah blah blah" when losing an argument.

Poonte and Snurp,
I understand you opinions but let me put a simple question to you and you give me the solution that is best and practical given the situation of Nepal.

If KG steps down (let's say tomorrow), reforms the constitution and somehow is bound by it, what will be your suggestion to carry on? Really if you were to give a step by step analysis, doesn't have to be too long, just step or steps to follow if KG steps down. And please be practical.

Poonte by this statement you made to Bathroomcoffee, "By placing your faith in KingG to put food on the tables of poor Nepalis, and claiming we first need food and peace before democracy, aren't you then supporting HIM? Why then claim you don't support him along with other leaders? ," you sound like Bush saying, "You are either with us or with terrorist."
And following the same logic as you have used to call BRoomcoffee, KG supporter, shouldn't it be true that, by supporting democracy, you are supporting the same old, corrupt politicians?

Before this thread exhaust it's quota of 300 postings, I just want to express my feeling about the Rally in a few lines. I am certainly happy to be a part of a historical rally that I will be talking about with my grandchildren and their children. But the most important thing to me was that despite the specific purpose of the rally geared to garner support for a moderate demand of reversing the royal takeover, I felt among the mass a strong sense of recognition, acceptance and support for "full democracy", the code word for Democratic Republic of Nepal. It is a different fact that the major speakers, either by their personal ideological disposition or due to the formal constraint of the rally, failed to talk about "full democracy" and thus failed to connect to the mass which was evident. Nayway, all in all, my faith in "full democracy" has doubled after the Rally. There will be no Jana-andolan II unless it is for "fully democracy". I am more sure about it now than I ever was.

Republic : To reject the generation of incompetent leaders who have been silently justifying/compensating for their incompetence with a "father figure" of the King.

Republic: To reject the King who can not live without the power.

Republic: To disarm the Maoist both physically and ideologically and to mainstream them to Democracy.

In short, To break the all swallowing triangle of Feudalism-Terrorism-Corruption and to build Democracy anew at last or for the first time in our history.

Hurray,
please don't be mistaken. I am not a political pundit nor expert in this field nor I attended any kind of rallies. Thus, I would not be in a position to give you policies on how I am gonna change nepal like the mayor of KTM said in the 1990's (I will change ktm to singapore tomorrow!!)

I am just surprised at the dismay of people over people who merely voice their opinion for peace, stability and democracy. Hurray, you gotta be practical first...IFS n BUTS are not practical!

My point is, hurray, we too are concerned about sheer poverty and destitution that millions of Nepalis face. And we believe that can be resolved ONLY through strenthened democracy, not autocracy. We experienced autocracies of one form or the other for decades, and they never resolved the problem of poverty. They never can. Social and poltical ills are resolved ONLY by empowering the PEOPLE, not by empowering the King, or the few army generals, and dictatorships only do the latter.

Therefore, by opposing the proponents of democracy, those who favor the current status quo, are automatically in favor of the king's absolutism. There is noting wrong with that -- everyone is entitled to their respective beliefs, Howver, people like BRC tend to only display their contradictions when they say they don't support the king, yet they oppse those who support democracy.

As for what should be the next step, I can probably write a whole book on it. However, in the limited time and space capacity, here is what i would like to happen:

1. Full, complete and non-negotiated restoration of people's rights.
2. Resignation of the political leaders to make room for newer, cleaner faces.
3. Disarmament of the Maoists in exchange for a new GENUINELY pro-people constition, and the constructive weakening of the monarchy.

However, first and foremost, democracy must be restored. Without people's voices being allowed to be heard, and peopel praticing their full rights, ANY attempts to reform the political parties and to reign in the Maoists will have neither the effect, nor the legitimacy. Peopls'e rights are NOT, and SHOULD NOT BE, a matter of negotiations, Now, the roles that the respective conflicting parties can play in a democratic framework of governance, then can be negotiated. The intricacies of such details of negotiations can be dealt with with professional help.

14 years is definitely NOT enough time for any kind of social and politcal transformations. Despite many difficulties, the general trend towards empowering the people, especially the ones from rural areas who were buitterly neglected by the autocratic regimes in the past was growing. We had 30 years of panchayat, give democracy atleast the same number of years top prove itself. A generations' time would have begun to reap the fruits of democracy in Nepal.

Finally,

DO NOT RELY ON A DESPOTIC KING, CORRUPT LEADERS OR TERRORIST MAOISTS TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM FOR US. LET US BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE, AND LET US FIGHT FOR OUR COLLECTIVE POWER TO BE ALLOWED TO PROSPER.

ONLY DEMOCRACY CAN ENSURE THE EMPOWERMENT OF THE PEOPLE.

"So, would you rather that we should have stayed home and shut our mouths for the reasons that you have mentioned? If not, why are you then questioning our rights to express ourselves by attending the rally? Stick to one position."

WHY SHOULD I STICK TO A POSITION WHEN I HAVE NOT EVEN UNDERSTOOD THIS HAWADARI PROTEST. WHAT WAS IT FOR ? YEAH OK TO PROTEST ..IF THE BENEFITS GOTO THE ONES THAT SPOKE THEN ..ALL OF THIS WAS IN VAIN.
I am not questioning your right to express yourself(As I said earlier, go excercise your right to expression with the Naked cowboy in times sq for all I care but DO NOT GO REPRESENTING THE WHOLE POPULATION) .... all I am saying is that THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO OPPOSE YOUR POOINT OF VEIW TOOO(and we have the right just like you)

ONCE AGAIN I am not with the king or congress or communist. I am NEUTRAL(cause i do not agree with any of them). I am for UN to come and restore order(but it will never happen, just like Us won't give a rats ass about what happens in Nepal).
