My parents are flying back on American Airlines and in Honk Kong they are switching over to Cathy Dragon. We were told we need to apply for transit visa. I have tried to call the visa section of the Chinese embassy with out luck. We live in Omaha so we cannot go to the embassy in person. Has any one applied for the transit visa for honk Kong in the USA, please share your experiences.

If the itinerary would have been Cathay Pacific and then Cathay Dragon, probably transit visa would not have been required for Nepalese passport holder. But, I am not 100% sure about it as of 2019. It is something I am trying to figure out.

I assume it at least takes couple of weeks to get HKG visa.

The website says either apply in person at Chinese Embassy in DC or mail the application to Honkong Immigration Department in Honkong directly.

First thing...there shouldn't be need of visa as this is only transit and you are not exiting airport. So confirm this. If visa is required and you dont have much time to wait then I would suggest to cancel and rebook new. Visa rejection rate by Chinese embassy to nepali pp holder is quite high even when applicant is us pr holder.
Bottomline is try avoiding Chinese itinary. While you enjoy price they offered, soon you will face lots of frustration due to communication issue. Sometimes simple things gets really complex. I was almost about to get deported by immigration officers. When I asked what's going on. There was only two words reply. "GO". "SIT".
