I know it may sound awkward, and it's time to think about kids' education, but would it be a fruitful attempt and good idea for a person who is in mid 40s to change profession to IT field? Currently a civil engineer with a job, but not completly satisfied with the profession itself. Which field of IT is better to get a job with a 6 months-1 year trainging/course + self-study?

I have seen people do that.
As for field whatever you feel comfortable in.

I always wished I was a civil engineer...currently in IT.

I have a PE but mainly due to job dissatisfaction, and money. I feel like Civil Engineering job has too many limitations and risks as you start to have more than five years experience. One needs good management skill, and very good command in communication (and be cuning too) to compete with americans and go up. This is not a field you go up by your technical skill. I don't think civil Engineers are well paid due to the competition in the market .

You surely can get into IT.
First pick what technology you would like to start into.
If you going fultime route then you might have to start from the entry level so you might lose some pay.

But then its very easy to go up in IT. In about you should see an increase of 40% to 60% in salary. If not, change jobs and you should get that 40 percent upgrade.

Even if within the company you should get a raise of about at least 10% per year.

Starting salary varies depending upon technology and location but if you take a start of 45K let's say for example within 2 years you should look yourself in about 65K

At 40, I am sure you have 10 to 15 years experience. With that experience and PE, you should not have a problem making 90k and above easily as a civil engineer. With that money, if you are still not satisfied financially, I have no comments about it. About dis-satisfaction about the job, you have done it for so long and have gained much necessary skills and experience. I am sure you liked the profession since you have been in it for so long. About the management, you can definitely change to a new company. About IT, you will be starting at around 65k through consultancy with minimal training. Also, there is no guarantee you will like the new job or will be valuable in the field as you are now to the civil engineering world with that much experience.
