Muslim boy's 'cool clock' is a fraud, says expert

The most famous clock in America is a “fraud,” according to an electronics expert who says 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed did not invent anything and simply took a commercial clock out of its manufactured case.

In recent days, the story went viral of Mohamed being handcuffed and arrested after his clock was mistaken for a possible bomb. Police defended their actions, and school officials upheld Mohamed’s suspension.

Critics of those actions suggest Mohamed was treated unfairly because of bigotry toward Muslims. President Obama even reacted to the story on Twitter.

“Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great,” tweeted Obama.

Mohamed also received invitations to meet Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and go to NASA and MIT.

Twitter has offered him an internship. TV hosts Stephen Colbert and Ellen DenGeneres have called him.

But is the whole invention a sham?

In a YouTube video that received hundreds of thousands of views in just the first 24 hours, electrical expert Thomas Talbot dissects a photo of Mohamed’s clock.

"This child, nothing against him personally, never built a clock," said Talbot in the video that runs less than four minutes. "He did not invent a clock or build it, and I'm going to show you why."

Talbot says an expert view of Mohamed's clock makes it very clear what the Texas high-school student did.

"What this is is a commercial alarm clock, as you would purchase in any department store and use at your bedside," Talbot explained. "All he did was remove the plastic case from the alarm clock. This is not an invention. This is not something that someone built or even assembled."

He then lists several reasons for his conclusion.

"If someone had really made a clock, this circuitry would not look like this. First of all, this transformer is for a 120 volt line. People who do 'maker' things do not tend to use AC power because it's a bit more dangerous and there's no reason to do it. You can use batteries," Talbot said.

What do YOU think? Sound off on the saga of Ahmed the teenage Muslim clockmaker now in the WND poll!

Next, he spots something fishy with the circuit boards.

"These are manufactured, printed circuit boards, with printed circuit board circuits with a micro-controller in the middle," Talbot said. "Those manufactured boards are used in manufactured products or professional engineer sample runs."

He found even more alleged red flags.

"The ribbon cables in between these are also indicative of a manufactured product. As a matter of fact, commercial clocks tend to have 9-volt battery backup and this even has the 9-volt battery backup," he said, adding: "This was put in here to look like a device – with these cables and cords – this was put in here to look like a device that would be suspicious and, I think, intentionally so."

He continued, "I see no evidence that this is any creation whatsoever or that there was any modification or even assembly of anything, to have made things out of a kit for example. This is simply taking a clock out of its case."

Talbot then shows a picture of crude clock he created and later improved upon to show the difference between inventors' and commercial products.

"It's on a protoboard, where you can attach wires to a micro-controller," he said. "Something like this is much more likely to be something you would see if someone had actually made anything."

He is quick to point out young kids are capable of great inventions. But this just isn't one of them.

"I've worked with kids in contests who have actually built things. I've seen 12-year-olds and 14-year-olds make amazing things on their own," he said. "Unfortunately, whether it fits your narrative or whatever you want to believe or not, this particular child down in Texas did not make anything. He did not make a clock. He simply took something out of the casing."

"People should not recognize this as an invention and recognize this child as an inventor for this particular creation when plenty of other kids have invented things," added Talbot.

"So if you thought this kid made an invention, you've been fooled," he concluded.

Hoax Exposed: Muslim Student Ahmed Mohamed’s ‘Briefcase Clock’ is 1980s Digital Alarm Clock

““Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”
President Barack Obama, September 16, 2015

It was a Hoax.
Ahmed Mohamed’s claims that he assembled a clock at home that he took to school is starting to unravel.

Two investigators who have studied the image of Mohamed’s device provided by Irving, Texas police have concluded that Mohamed did not make the clock. Both conclude that Mohamed disassembled a manufactured clock and installed it in a large pencil box without its casing. And both say it is possible it was done to provoke suspicion or to resemble a bomb.

Update: Clock has been identified as being sold in a 1986 Radio Shack catalogue by an Art Voice reader. The headline and text for this article has been changed to reflect the update.

Ahmed Clock Irving PD

14-year-old Mohamed, a Muslim, was briefly arrested and investigated for bringing a hoax bomb to MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas on Monday. He was subsequently cleared.

Thousands of dollars have been donated to Ahmed Mohamed in just the past few days, reported CNN.

“On Monday, 14-year-old Mohamed was arrested for taking a homemade clock to school that his teachers thought was a bomb. So crowdfunding platform LaunchGood started a campaign to raise $100,000 for the Muslim teen.

“In just one day, the site had raised over $10,000 from more than 200 backers. It’s hoping to raise $100,000 by October 13.

“”The support for it has been amazing,” said Chris Abdur-Rahman Blauvelt, CEO of LaunchGood, which supports projects started by Muslims or ones that are tied to the history and study of Islam.

…”Blauvelt said his campaign has the approval of Mohamed’s family. He said half of the money donated will go toward a scholarship fund for Mohamed and the rest to efforts that foster creativity and inventiveness in kids.

“In addition to LaunchGood, crowdfunding platform Gofundme has also launched a campaign for Mohamed. It’s raised more than $4,000 with a goal of $60,000 that will go toward Mohamed’s future college tuition.”

Thomas Talbot posted a video to YouTube explaining the various parts in the photo of Mohamed’s briefcase clock belong to a manufactured alarm clock.

“Anthony”, writing at the blog Art Voice, detailed how Mohamed’s device is actually a 1980s digital alarm clock sold by Radio Shack.

“For starters, one glance at the printed circuit board in the photo, and I knew we were looking at mid-to-late 1970s vintage electronics. Surely you’ve seen a modern circuit board, with metallic traces leading all over to the various components like an electronic spider’s web. You’ll notice right away the highly accurate spacing, straightness of the lines, consistency of the patterns. That’s because we design things on computers nowadays, and computers assist in routing these lines. Take a look at the board in Ahmed’s clock. It almost looks hand-drawn, right? That’s because it probably was. Computer aided design was in its infancy in the 70s. This is how simple, low cost items (like an alarm clock) were designed. Today, even a budding beginner is going to get some computer aided assistance – in fact they’ll probably start there, learning by simulating designs before building them. You can even simulate or lay out a board with free apps on your phone or tablet. A modern hobbyist usually wouldn’t be bothered with the outdated design techniques. There’s also silk screening on the board. An “M” logo, “C-94” (probably, a part number – C might even stand for “clock”), and what looks like an American flag. More about that in a minute. Point for now being, a hobbyist wouldn’t silk screen logos and part numbers on their home made creation. It’s pretty safe to say already we’re looking at ’70s tech, mass produced in a factory.

So I turned to eBay, searching for vintage alarm clocks. It only took a minute to locate Ahmed’s clock.See this eBay listing, up at the time of this writing. Amhed’s clock was invented, and built, by Micronta, a Radio Shack subsidary. Catalog number 63 756.”

“The shape and design is a dead give away. The large screen. The buttons on the front laid out horizontally would have been on a separate board – a large snooze button, four control buttons, and two switches to turn the alarm on and off, and choose two brightness levels. A second board inside would have contained the actual “brains” of the unit. The clock features a 9v battery back-up, and a switch on the rear allows the owner to choose between 12 and 24 hour time. (Features like a battery back-up, and a 24 hour time selection seems awful superfluous for a hobby project, don’t you think?) Oh, and about that “M” logo on the circuit board mentioned above? Micronta.”

…”Because, is it possible, that maybe, just maybe, this was actually a hoax bomb? A silly prank that was taken the wrong way?…”

President Barack Obama tweeted an invitation to the White House to Mohamed before all the details were known.

Obama’s press secretary Josh Earnest attacked teachers at a briefing on Wednesday for calling in authorities to investigate Mohamed.

“Q Josh, how did President Obama come to post a tweet about a high school student in Texas who made a clock with some wires that got him in trouble? And why did he choose to tweet about it?”

“MR. EARNEST: Well, I think the President, like many of us, was struck by the news reports of this particular incident. Mark, the fact is that America’s best teachers in our schools — in our best schools at least — nurture the intellectual curiosity of all of our students. In this instance, it’s clear that at least some of Ahmed’s teachers failed him. That’s too bad. But it’s not too late for all of us to use this as a teachable moment and to search our own conscience for biases in whatever form they take.

“This episode is a good illustration of how pernicious stereotypes can prevent even good-hearted people who dedicate their lives to educating young people for doing the good work that they set out to do.”

“So the President was pleased to extend an invitation — or the White House was pleased to extend an invitation to Ahmed to participate in Astronomy Night that will be hosted here at the White House next month. Astronomy Night is an event that we’ve previously held here that will bring together government, scientists, and NASA astronauts and others to spend some time with young people examining the wonders of the heavens. And it will be an opportunity for them to talk about science and our solar system and the universe. And it should be a good event. And I think that — or at least we are hopeful that Ahmed will feel right at home here.”

“Q Does President Obama believe bias was a factor because the young man is Muslim?”

“MR. EARNEST: Well, I think from this distance, it’s far too early to draw that direct assessment from here. We have seen that local law enforcement officials have closed the case. And I think there are some difficult and penetrating questions that do need to be asked in pursuit of the information that you just presented.”

How Ahmed’s clock became a false, convenient tale of racism

"Josh Welch, a white Maryland kid with ADHD who was 7 years old when he was kicked out of school for chewing a Pop-Tart into the shape of a pistol and pretending to shoot other students with it, must be puzzled.

Where’s his White House invitation? Where’s his chance to start networking at Facebook? His parents were forced to hire a lawyer and spent a year and a half just trying to get the suspension erased from the kid’s record. They were repeatedly refused.

Alex Stone, a 16-year-old white kid from Summerville, SC, wrote a short story in which he imagined using a gun to kill a dinosaur. For this, his locker was searched and he was arrested, handcuffed, charged with “disorderly conduct” and suspended from school for three days.

Obviously the White House and Mark Zuckerberg couldn’t be bothered to comment, but you’d think that, at the very least, Stephen King would have sent out a tweet expressing outrage that imagination was being punished.

Dropping politics aside , I am pretty sure non of you have teen kid of yours, nither do I have, but saying this a hoax is completely unfair to this kid for freaking politics, I will never be greatness of America.

This kid never said he invented a clock, and everyone knows he made each and every parts. He simply did it as school project and he didn't went to school that morning saying I invented something completely new or thinking I will use this to be famous. He got into something unexpected and they are handeling as it goes. Now everybody know he might have fixed old clock or assembled old parts here and there to make clock, that what kids do as part of school projects. President have two teenage kinds and he does knows it. Calling it a hoax is completely unfair.

Seems like this kid wanted to get arrested. Also now it seems he didnt create any clock.. he only took a working clock and put inside a small suitcase to look like bomb.. Apparently it was even making beeping noises..

No he was not a fraud. He never claimed that he invented a clock(duh!). The whole issue was because he was handcuffed for something as minor as showing his clock which was mistaken for a bomb and typical stereotype thinking for the muslim people in general. I

The original post and the news it linked is missing the point completely.

This story is not about invention or a genius-boy coming up with a new clock. This is about racism, bias, deep rooted fear of the ones who don't look like you and common sense in general.

As far as Obama's tweet, it is about encouraging scientific minds. I don't think anybody said this boy invented a new clock all by himself - Obama wanted to encourage the participation of kids in the field of science, hence the tweet. He is not recommending a Nobel prize for the kid for inventing a new kind of clock.

Why he made the clock look like a bomb then ? And why was it making beeping sounds ? In movies u see many bombs that look just like that..

Its like you going to the GHETTO and showing off CASH and dollar bills. What u think will happen ? U will get robbed and maybe even shot...

Same here, muslim boy, makes a device look and sounds like bomb...Then he brings it to his classroom.. Looks like a bomb, sounds like a bomb and he is in a school. Are you going to think its "CLOCK" or "BOMB" ?

That's the thing, the context of Muslim boy. What they would have done if it was brought by decent looking white boy, would they have asked what is it, would they have gave opportunity to explain or just called the cope and cops also just hand coff him. Well for bomb it also needs explosives just not the trigger.

The the blame like the faked the clock is just bullshit, it's not even relevant. This is crappy Fox News agenda.
