Chhalphal Discussion Series (Boston) - Domestic violence in immigrant Asian communities

Date: Thursday, Oct 31, 2002

EVENT INFO:

"Domestic violence in immigrant Asian communities"

The discussion will focus on the prevalence of domestic violence within Asian immigrant communities in Massachusetts and also on programs and services offered by the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence for the victims.

The mission of the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence is to eliminate family violence and to strengthen Asian families and communities. Founded in 1987, the Task Force represents a group of diverse Asian community leaders concerned about the incidence of domestic violence in Asian communities. Initially, the Task Force worked to educate Asian communities and battered women's service providers and develop culturally appropriate resources for battered Asian women. In 1994, the Task Force expanded its services when it opened the first battered women's shelter in New England specifically for Asian women.

Speaker: Reema Kalra

Reema Kalra is the Outreach Coordinator for the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence in Boston, an organization working to eliminate family violence and strengthen families within the Asian community.
