Title: "Educating Nepali Girls for What?? Four decades of teaching girls - a look at past, present and future Speaker: Mrs Sanu K Nepal Bhattarai; Principal, Kanya Mandir Higher Secondary School Date: March 5, 2005 Time: 1:30PM Location: Science Center, Harvard University, Cambridge Synopsis: In Nepal, although policymakers seem to be aware of the utmost importance of education for all, education still does not get the attention and resources it deserves. Education for girls has been especially marginalized due to our paternal social and cultural structure that leads us to believe that girls are more of "a liability (naso)" than an "asset" to a family. Mrs. Sanu K. Nepal Bhattarai will cover historical aspects of girl?s education in Nepal and will concentrate on the theme of "Educating Nepali Girls for What?" Based on her four decades of experience in girls education sector, she will take a hard look at why the large majority of the educated women are merely becoming educated housewives/clerical staffs, and not becoming national leaders in any given discipline. Speaker: Mrs. Sanu K. Nepal Bhattarai is the Principal of Kanya Mandir Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu. She has been teaching Nepali girls Accounting & Office Management and related subjects for four decades. She has been an administrator, policymaker, and thinker on the field of education. She has served on and advised various education policy boards such as Curriculum Board at Ministry of Education, Higher Secondary Education Board, Higher Education Examination Board, District of Education Board in Kathmandu, Non-formal Education Board, and District Child Welfare Committee in Kathmandu. She is also involved with various not-for-profit social/educational organizations.
