Title: State of Dentistry in Nepal Taking care of Nepali teeth, cleft lips and palates Speaker: Dr. Manish Lamichane, DDS Date: May 20, 2004 THURSDAY Time: 7:15 PM Location: 33 Kirkland Street, William James Hall, Harvard University, Cambridge See Map below Synopsis: The state of dentistry in Nepal is slowly improving but there is much progress to be made. The establishment of professional standards, ethics and licensing bodies is germane to the development of dentistry as a profession. This will help pave the way for the delivery of care to rural areas and increased public awareness of dental disease and its prevention. Dr. Lamichane will focus on the development of orthodontic care for cleft lip and palate patients, particularly for families of subsistence farmers in remote areas who cannot travel to Kathmandu for frequent dental appointments. On a recent trip to Kathmandu, a dental camp in Kirtipur provided a glimpse into the disparity in resources and awareness in rural and urban areas in Nepal. Dr. Lamichane will discuss what he learned in speaking with Kathmandu dentists and surgeons and how an East-West collaboration can be beneficial. Speaker: Dr. Manish Lamichane grew up in Toronto, Canada. He received his bachelors degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He obtained his DDS in 1999 from the University of Toronto followed by a one year general practice residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Since then, he has practiced general dentistry in two private practices while maintaining his hospital appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lamichane will be starting a three year graduate fellowship at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in July in Orthodontics. ______________________________________________________________________ ChhalPhal Discussion Series is a regular Nepal-related discussion program held in the Boston area.
