Title: Of Nettles, Rural Entreprenuership and Empowerment - Making it Happen in Nepal Speaker: Kopila Rai, President & Founder, Chingkha Allo Cloth Production Club Date: February 26, 2003; Thursday - 7:00PM Location: Room 105, William James Hall, 33 Kirkland Street, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138 Although most people go out of their way to avoid the stinging nettle (allo), Kopila, a resident of Chinghka village in the Makalu-Barun area, has no such qualms. The founder and president of a cooperative, Chingkha Allo Cloth Production Club, whose 25 female members weave traditional Nepalese cloth from the beaten fibers of the prickly nettle bark, Kopila has dedicated her life to preserving an ancient craft while providing economic empowerment to local women. Although Kopila has only five years of schooling, with her business savvy and charm she has managed to not only develop extensive marketing links with Nepalese retailers but also provide training for other women looking to start cooperatives around the country. Ms. Rai was honored as one of 12 "mountain heroes" in 2003 by the Mountain Institute. Ms. Rai is in Boston from February 23rd to 27th to participate in the International Bridge Builders Conference, organized by the students at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
