FLATFILEcontemporary
A Global Language - an international invitational exhibition
Suskera, the work of 4 Nepal artists- Project Room
December 5- January 11, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, December 5, 5-9pm

In a spirit of cooperation between nations and among diverse people of the world, FLATFILEcontemporary will open A GLOBAL LANGUAGE on December 5, 2003.

The International Invitational, brainchild of Director Susan Aurinko, seeks to create a bridge between people through the universal language of art. Aurinko hopes, in spite of the terrorism and wars that continue to rage throughout the world, to promote peace through an exhibition that celebrates the similarities among people of the world, and does not dwell on the differences between them.

A Global Language, which will be on display from 5 December 2003 until 11 January 2004, is composed of work from a variety of artistic disciplines through the countries with Consulates in Chicago who have chosen to participate. Aurinko sees the exhibit as a marvelous opportunity for a show of international camaraderie and cooperation. She is pleased to have a space large enough to accommodate such an exciting exhibit, and to have the interest of the diplomatic community. The consulates were contacted and each was invited to submit one artist’s work for the exhibit. Among those committed to the show are France, Argentina, Canada, The Philippines, The Netherlands, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, El Salvador, Republic of The Ukraine, Uruguay, Israel, and Columbia.

In the gallery’s project room will hang, as a small “show within a show”; the work of four Nepal artists showing under the name of SUSKERA; the word for the sound the breeze makes in the trees. One of the Nepal painters, the young Purnima Yadav, was recently found dead in her apartment in Nepal. This exhibit is being dedicated to her, and to Kelly McKinnell, one of FLATFILEphotography’s gifted young artists who was killed in an accident earlier this year.

The announcement image, by Theodora Plas of the Netherlands, was chosen to represent the exhibit because her work is largely text-based, and contains imagery derived from many alphabets and languages. The pieces that comprise the postcard image are taken from an installation Plas created for a large manufacturing concern in Amsterdam, in which painted glass squares are suspended within the glass curtain wall of the building’s
façade.

On December 12, the anniversary of the day that His Holiness the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, the gallery will host a fundraiser for the Tibetan Alliance of Chicago in conjunction with the exhibition. For details, please contact Betsy Byrd at 773.381.3816 / e-mail EBYRD@msn.com or Tibetan Alliance President Sherab Gyatso, at Sgyatso@aol.com. The Tibetan Alliance website will also post information closer to the event. (www.Tibetan-alliance.org)

On December 19, OTHER VOICES, a literary publication of UIC, will have a book release for their new issue. For details, contact OTHER VOICES at 312.413.2209. FLATFILEcontemporary is open Tuesday-Saturday, from 10:30 to 6. We hope you will join us in this special celebration of the power of art to express the commonality of the world’s citizens.
