Date: Sunday, Jul 21, 2013

EVENT INFO:

As part of a Talk Series organized by the Nepali Student Association at MIT (MITeri), our upcoming lecture is by Bigyan R. Bista, a PhD candidate in the Department of Biology/Koch Insitute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, on the Biology of Cancer:

Title: "Cancer Progression and Metastatic Spread - The Deadly Saga"

Overview:

In this lecture, I will describe the rudimentary understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of cancer progression and current views on how cancer cells attain the ability to metastasize to distant organs which ultimately results in millions of deaths every year. I will then briefly cover how interactions of normal cells in the body and tumor cells influence the metastatic cascade, and I will touch upon the different rationales for novel therapies against tumor growth and metastatic dissemination. Finally, I will highlight recent advancements in cancer research and how Cambridge is turning into innovation capital in the field of life-sciences. Strong background in science is not required; curiosity and strong appetite for knowledge should suffice.
