Synopsis:

Indo-Nepal border demarcation started in the period 1816-60 during the British Raj in India following Sugauli Sandhi (Treaty). More detailed work continues to this date. There are disputes in fifty-four places, the most famous being the one at Kalapani the source of Mahakali River, recently claimed by India to be within its border. Historical maps and documents from pre-1860 clearly show Kalapani within Nepal; but the post-1860 maps, without any supporting documents or treaty per se, show Kalapani on the Indian side. Clearly, this is a recent encroachment and the maps were manipulated.

On the Chinese side, the demarcation was completed in 1963. There were thirty-two places of disputes; however, all disputes were resolved amicably, and most notably the dispute around Mount Everest was resolved at the Prime Ministerial level in a mutually beneficial manner.

A slide show presentation will be followed by a discussion on the issues of border demarcation and border management, nature and source of border disputes and possible ways of resolutions. The book "Nepal ko Simana" will be available for those who want to buy a copy.
