Synopsis: General Katawal believes strongly that the integration of Maoist combatants into the National Army will not serve the cause of peace, democracy or stability in Nepal. General Katawal’s stand against the integration of Maoist combatants into the National Army prompted the then Maoist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to fire him from office, only to be overruled by the President, who reinstated him back to the position of COAS. General Katawal continues to remain visible and vocal about the need to preserve the National Army as a purely professional, non-partisan institution. Come and learn more about General Katawal’s perspective presented in person.

About the speaker:General Katawal served as the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Nepalese Army from September 2006 to late 2009, a period in which Nepal transformed from a monarchy to a republic. He is a graduate of the Indian National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy, the Army Command and Staff College of UK, the Senior Command Course (India), and the National Defense University (Pakistan). Additionally, he earned the coveted Gideon in the U.S. Ranger Course and graduated as the Distinguished International Honor Graduate of the U.S. Special Forces Course. General Katawal holds a BA degree from Nepal's Tribhuwan University and an MA Degree in National Defence from Pakistan's Quaid-i-Azam University.
