Topic: "Art as witness" Artist/social worker's take on women trafficking in Nepal Speaker: Myrna Balk; Artist/Social Worker, Brookline, Massachusetts Date: June 26, Thursday Time: 7:15-9:00PM Location: William James Hall, 33 Kirkland Street, Harvard University, Cambridge Synopsis: Inspired by the stories of the Nepali women who were returned to their villages by the brothels after they became sick [with HIV] and useless or after being rescued from sex-slavery by NGOs like ABC Nepal, Maiti Nepal and others, Myrna Balk produced thematic etchings telling the sad stories of these women and girls. Each piece addresses a dimension of the business of women trafficking. These women and young girls were either kidnapped or tricked into going to India where they were sold in to brothels and forced to work as sex slaves. Balk will display her artwork and those produced by the women she interviewed and talk about her experience in Nepal in the context of the global women trafficking scenario. Speaker: Myrna Balk Myrna Balk is a Brookline based social worker and an artist. For several years Balk has been visiting Nepal and learning about the plight of women and girls. Her exhibition brings together her own work paired with work created by Nepali women, in drawing sessions led by her. Myrna Balk's artistic works, on paper and in wood, have been shown in Boston, New York, Cleveland, Kathmandu, Beijing, India, Hungary, and at the United Nations in New York, most recently in collaboration with Tempest Production's - The Body and Sold
