Synopsis:
The
open border system between Nepal and India has affected peace and
security of both nations. Activities such as cross-border terrorism,
narcotics trafficking, arms and ammunitions trafficking, human
trafficking (esp. of Nepali women)have gone unchecked across the
borders. Policies such as mandating ID cards, fencing the frontiers or
strictly enforcing border protection will keep these unchecked
activities under control.
About the Speaker:
Buddhi Narayan Shrestha is the
Managing Director, Bhumichitra Mapping and Land Development Co. P.
Ltd., Kathmandu and a former Director General of Survey Department of
Nepal. He is the preeminent authority on Nepal's geography and border
issues. He has published numerous books including Indo-Nepal Frontier
Dam 2009; Nepal-India and China Treaty (Co-Author) 2009; Disputes on
Federalism and Nationality (Co-Author 2009); Nationalism in the context
of Nepal (Co-Author 2008); Knowledge on Boundary (2007); Border
Management of Nepal (2003); Border Management in the context of
National Security (2002), Boundary of Nepal (Book) 2000; and Cadastral
Survey for Public Usefulness (1981). He has also served as Chief Editor
of MILAN Magazine, JICA Alumni Association of Nepal and has published
more than 150 articles in various daily, weekly and monthly newspapers,
magazines and journals on the border business of Nepal. He has won
numerous awards including Itihas Siromani Baburam Acharya Shod Samman
(2008) and Madan Puraskar (2001), and Gorkha Dakshinbahus.
