About the Speaker:
Hem
Pokharel has been working on Silvered Ceramic Filters for about 5 years
as a Project Manager at Solutions Benefiting Life
(www.solutionsbenefitinglife.org), a Boston area-based not-for-profit
organization. He manages the implementation of water treatment program
in cooperation with manufacturers (potters), collaborators (schools,
micro-lending groups, community leaders) and users.
Hem and
his team have opened 8 production sites in Nepal where all of the
manufacturing and distribution is done by local people so that the
money stays in the community and there is a chance for many independent
micro-businesses. They have partnered with UNICEF, WHO and Rotary
International. UNICEF has been buying the filters from the local
manufacturers in Nepal.
Hem has earned a B.S. in Environmental
Science from Kathmandu University, Nepal, a B.S. in Geography, and a
Certificate in Environmental Studies from University of Massachusetts,
Boston.
