I have been in USA for few yrs.I work for a small company in H1b. They have filed my greencard for EB3 since 2008. It seems like I have to wait 3 more yrs for green card to say the least.I have my australian PR approved. I am in dilemma as people say australia is full of racists. I need suggestions especially from nepalese people who moved to australia about the situation or if they regret their decision.I haven't made up my mind on anything though.

USA is USA no problem there.but form Nepalese prospective AUSTRALIA is   better as migrants and thats my view, you do not have to agree to that. Just look how many nepalese are succesfull there.

@bigrekoketo: Can you share the information about how you got the Australian PR being here in US? I am also planning to do the same since it takes very long to get GC in US with bachelors degree. If you could share how you applied and what docs you needed and how long it took, that would be helpful for other sajhaites too. I looked at the website that you stated and found out that i also met the points but don't know how and where to proceed.

Now regarding your question about Australlia/US , i would say even though you got PR over there, it's hard to find job in AUS as Melbourne and Sydney are the only places where you can get tech jobs whereas the opportunity in U.S is everywhere. So my suggestion is that to find a job from here applying online and after securing the full time job over there, you can probably move down there. Also from my g.f i found out that, AUS doesn't pay you as per the experience which means you will be getting highest $70K whereas even the restaurant worker can make $50K since the payrate is high. So there won't be much difference in income between restaurant worker and Computer programmer. Also to add in that, the living expenses is extremely high. My g.f said even a banana costs $10.99 per lb lol

Thanks

Anon,

i myself lived in australia for a long time, outside you dont' see much of a racism ..but if you work in govt or large corporation its highly racist country, if you want to progressed ahead you are limited by color/race and religion, if you work on resturant/cab etc you wont' feel any racism until u end up in QLD or Western Australia.

I have seen many of my friend left australia even they were citizen of australia for the career n better life. I travelled around USA and seen my self , visited my friends and saw how happy they are compare to here, that motivated me to make a move as well.
secondly australia housing price is overly- inflated (artificiallY)  owning a house is almost impossible unless u give up everything.
median house price runs around 550 - 600 k that is like 2 brm house with 300sqm land n almost 45 minutes from city centre.

australia is one of the highest taxed nation + very expensive place to live. yeah its little more clean, more greener, open areas..playground etc but then your savings is 0 ..even rent is way to expensive unless you decide to rent 2 bedroom apartment and share among 8-10 ppl as many of them do here now.

If you looking to progress ahead on merit basis n have more comfortable life USA is the best place to be. i 've travelled quite a lot of places and i feel USA is best for non- white people.

but if you work on hospitality/cab/cleaner Australlia pays well..the earning between highly educated intellectual and non educated profession is very similar. so its upto you

every place have pros and cons but i prefer USA and i myself looking for an opportunity in USA ..and will move if i get any.,

i hope this helps.

@sirus_me - I heard the same thing about the compensation for skilled IT professionals. I've a friend working there as DBA and he told me that the compensation over there is around 50-55k. But, here in US, it's at least 10k or more. However, he told me that it's very good if you're in healthcare industry such as RNs.

@anon - I went over the link that you gave and found out that I've enough points to apply PR. Can this be done individually? Should I follow proper channel to process PR? Can you give us your experience how you yourself processed your PR? Thanks!

Lastly, in my view, it depends on your personal situation than to really pick one country better than the other. If you've a nice/stable job in US and make enough money, you obviouslly don't want to move to Australia or Canada; and vice-versa. Personally, I've applied mine GC under EB3 and will take at least 5 yrs. So, I'm definitely looking for any other backup options.

I processed it myself. First step is migration assesment from relevant authority, itdepends on your subject area of graduation. After positive assesment, I gave ielts. I filled an online applicaton after my ielts results and submitted required docs by scanning them. After a year case officer contacted me for further docs and medicals and police clearence

Thanks Anon, Appreciate it.

Hmm, For the Migration Assesment, Do you have to experience related to your subject of graduation? I did graduate in ME but working now in IT for like 2 years.

Please share your knowledge.

Thanks

There is no good and bad country. If you are earning good sum of of money in Nepal life is better even there despite everything.

It is not the case of USA vs Australia. One country can be good and bad depending upon where people gonna land up. However, in case of Anon i think it is better for him to go to Australia because it seems he is already getting PR there and have to wait a long time in US.

Now coming back to Australia vas USA question.  I have found people living in US have a belief that USA is best. Certainly it is not the case.  There are a lot of aspects where USA sucks big time and in other aspect they are really good.  I myself live in scandinavian country and I can challange anybody that our lifestyle is much better than USA.

And by the way ,   When people start to debate by saying  " USA is USA"....or ......." Iphone is Iphone"...........then they have nothing logical to argue about.  If USA is best tell me why it is best so that we all might agree.

The Cost of Living: Australia and the US Compared

by BOBINOZ on DECEMBER 8, 2010

I would imagine most of us from both Australia and the UK have, on occasions, glanced enviously over to the USA because, well, everything is so cheap there, isn’t it?

Houses are cheaper, petrol is cheaper, electricity is cheaper and so are electrical goods and many other regular household items.

Here in Australia, unlike the UK and the USA, we do not have an Amazon website.

Every time I have needed to buy (needed? No, wanted more like) some kind of little electrical gadget, it has always appeared to be much cheaper over at Amazon in the USA then I can get it for here.

USA Frustrated 300x151 The Cost of Living: Australia and the US ComparedBut what if we talk in yakka’s? The yakka, remember, is basically how much the average person can earn in one hour and therefore how long you need to work for to buy stuff. The amount varies for each country and you can read more about the yakka here.

Average annual incomes in America.

Trying to establish the average annual income for a full-time working adult in the USA is not easy. First, I found what should be reasonably accurate figures for median household income from the US government census website. They say its $52,029. (2009)

But as that refers to household income, clearly it implies more than one wage earner in some cases.

Looking around the same source, it appears that the mean income for both sexes (all races) aged 18 to 64 years was $40,845. (2009)

And I found a press release which said that personal income was down in 2010, and although it didn’t give the national average, it did quote the averages for the highest and lowest paid states. They were Connecticut at $54,397 and Mississippi at $30,103. You can read the full article here.

So, we’ll go with $40,845 then. That does appear to be a reasonably accurate figure.

The American Yakka

Therefore the American yakka is worth $40,845 divided by 52 and then divided again by 40. So….

One USA Yakka = $19.63.

So let’s now buy another Apple iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB. You will recall from last weeks introduction to the yakka, that we could buy it for $1049 in Australia and £714.00 in the UK.

Over at Amazon in America you can buy an Apple iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB for $898 USD. So let us now convert everything into US dollars.

  • Obviously, in America, your iPad will cost $898 USD.
  • In Australia the same iPad will cost $1027 USD (current conversion rate is one AUD equals 0.9794 USD).
  • In the UK, the iPad will cost $1122 USD (current conversion rate is 1GBP equals 1.5718 USD).

So the iPad is cheapest in America with it costing 14% more to buy in Australia and almost 25% more to buy in the UK. But what if we price it up using yakka’s? How many hours would you have to work to buy your iPad? Let me tell you…..

  • 47.41 UK yakka’s.
  • 45.7 US yakka’s.
  • 31.98 Aussie yakka’s.

So, instead of the iPad being 14% more expensive in Australia, it is now almost 43% dearer in the USA. That is a massive swing. I know this is just one item, but on current average salaries between Australia and the USA, it appears Americans have to work more than 50% longer than Australians to buy their stuff. So even if stuff in the USA is 15, 20 or even 25% cheaper than in Australia, that stuff is still not really cheaper at all.

Even when I started to write this post, I never expected it to turn out like this. I’m really quite shocked! The US, for Americans, is really quite expensive.

No more envious glances to Amazon in the USA for me from now on.

from backwards

Normally banana cost between 99 cents per kilo to 2.99 /kilo depending where you buy , Its expensive now beause of the queensland floods few months ago which destroyed 90% of the crop. Its not like banana is  10 $ per kilo all the time.

yes income is almost same for professonal s and trade workers , in some case more like , chef, locksmith, electrician  or plumber make more than say IT worker  or hotel manager in Australia.

70k highest is not true, some of my nepalese friends are getting 100k +. But starting is around 70. In case if you dont know there is something called minimum wage in australia and indutry must pay accoring the minimum wage rules.I would say for starting salary for IT workers ( 3 years bachelor degree+ ablity to actually work, not just degree ) is arounf 55-60 k whereas cook( 1 year training + 2 year experience) will commmand the same wage.

Australia is 13th largest economy and like US and UK its an advance economy.so  experience counts  and your pay depends on your experience.

@sirus
I really have no idea because my graduation did not require experience for migration assesment. There are forums like gettingdownunder and britishexpats where I am sure these issues has been discussed. My experience is in my field as well.

If you can make around 35 to 40 K per month, stay in Nepal. In Nepal no one will be calling you a Brown guy, and no one will treat you like a refugee. If you can contribute a little for the country you will have name and fame, unilike here in "Bidesh".

For my case i was not able to make even 15 K a month, so i left Nepal, but if i get an oppurtunity in Nepal i will go home for sure. I am planning to take a citizenship of "Bidesh" and will try my luck once again in "mero desh" lets see what happens.

Nepal in the land where i can walk around without bothering about what people are thinking about me. Where i can talk to people and walk with people of my own colour, i do not have to worry about my body giving some spicy smell to "white people". After all we all need is a freedom.

I believe Australia would be next to employ tight immigration rules after UK.

All I can say is Melbourne and Sydney are awesome.  I believe Melbourne ranks #1 or #2 consistently as the best city to live.  If I were you, I would move to Melbourne and start making a life there rather than waiting forever for American Green Card.  A bird in hand is better than two birds in bush.
