How do I take a laptop thru the custom in Nepal so that I do not have to pay the tax as I'm going to return the laptop with me when I leave Nepal? Any suggestions?

If you're bringing back your laptop , you do not have to pay anything, they might just make a note in your PP..

good luck !

. "tip" the customs people Rs. 500 (you have to haggle) or $10. i've had to do that twice. it was a really bad experience. i thought they would write it in my passport so that they can make sure i bring it back. but they wouldn't do it! they said they would charge me customs duty of Rs. 18,000 if I went through the official documentation process - even if I was bringing it back. i knew it was bullshit but couldn't really argue much more, just wanted to get out of the airport, you know.

although, i hear there is a new rule now that says students can take in one laptop for free, i.e without customs duty.

Thank you guys and especially what more. That's what I'm gonna have to do. This belongs to my kids, who actually are US citizens. Will that help me?

at ktm airport, just goto the Green channel, and say u have nothing to declare and just go. most likely nobody will harass u.

Oh don't worry about it. I took my laptop, video camera, digital camera and a cell phone all in my backpack and the custom officers didn't even bother to ask me what I have. In case if they ask you, just tell them you have nothing special and they won't trouble you further.

Good luck

. oh they are proactive alright. they say they want some "tea-expense". in my case, i was just carrying the laptop with me, so they actually stopped me.

. on another occasion, i have managed to take in a camcorder (it wasn't a small one) without any hassle. just walked straight through, nobody stopped me or asked me any questions. i felt like i could have smuggled anything through there, ehehe.
