That's a lot of money ! $90k in 8 years , you did well. Looks like you put in roughly $10k per year and some profit from market . Great, I only have $10k

typical Nepali talk, how much money you have? what kind of car you drive? what is your immigration status? .. why do you get curious about others.. there are much richer than you and a lot poorer than you.. if you think you are doing fine than you are doing fine

Mulajasto, I'm trying to compare growth rates here, not trying to size my wealth against others. I live in a small town in Indiana and don't really have many Nepali friends, I'm trying to see if I should contribute more based on replies here. I hope your 401k grows at a 100% , my best wishes.

Anyway, frustu bro, I contributed probably 5k a year but the market has grown a lot in the last 8 years hence the growth. Keep your comments coming guys.

No man I put some towards my house, some in lending club (p2p lending about 5% return so far) and rest in betterment.com and FAANG (fb, amzn, aapl, nflx and goog). Still drive a shitty car, wear cheap clothes and eat at mcdonalds/wendys and coupon like hell though.

Married for the last two years. I suggest maxing out your 401k at 16% if you're single because your tax rate is too high. My wife also contributes 12% into her 401k.

I've about ~100K after ~5years. Good 401K match at my firm - Tech firm. Investing mainly in high growth though volatile stocks i must add as well. Well, hoping to ride out the market in terms of fallout or better yet maybe exit my stock positions since the market is at all time high at the moment. Cash or sticking to bond market maybe if i exit my current stock positions.

I have about 20,000 in 1.5 yrs with 3% match and 3% contribution and investment in high risk portfolio and generous annual profit sharing from company. I know we can draw money before retirement with some penalty and tax payment.
In case of extreme hardship, I have safety net back in Nepal and my prospect of living beyond 70 is very minimal, is it worth accumulating money in 401 K.
Just curious.

Yeah kinda sucks you can't take out at an early age without penalty . But you can start taking out at ~60 years of age but that's also too much for Nepalese !

My goal is to take our everything at the age of 45 and go to Nepal and relax for rest of the life . I ain't staying here !

Frustu everyone keeps postponing their going back to nepal-for-good till they are old and retired. When you are 45 make sure you post an update
