I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me.

This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector.

I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money.

If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position.

Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting.

I hope gold will be back to 960 tomorrow. USD and financial  companies are back to trouble. But needs to be very careful. 

Short the rally is my strategy for this month and next.

Look like most of the folks here are short term holders. I did hold some stocks for short term last year 07. Any of you guys have any tax saving tips for trade like that would be greatly appreciate!

either sell only after 1 year OR  u can open a account as an IRA and trade with that account. tax free.. but IRA accoutns has restrictions on when u can remove the money tax free. i dont know the details but if u ask around or do some googling.

Do we get tax credit on Margin interest expenses? Where do we file it?

sucks i lost some money on some commodities... im getting out of GLD and SLV for now.

Margin interest is treated as deduction to get to "NET" investment income or loss. if you have more than 3k of loss in one year, you can carryforward indefinetly meaning you can deduct next year and so on..If you hold your securities for more than a year , u will get favourable tax treatment but it all depends on you AGI, Adjusted Gross Income ...that's it for free tax advise..

anthony15, wow solar stocks have definately gotten lot of media attention.. they are the hot sector at the moment in energy with Crude oil prices so high.  this whole thing seemed to happen out of nothing. good for u.

i think VCI is on a roll... i bought it at $13... its probably not too late but only take a small nibble.

WSCI looks good man..i see lots of volume coming in,  good pick..up from  recent pullback..

any idea what to put a stop loss at for WSCI...   this stock is down 6% for friday.

i put it at $12.75.....

Latoboy, I would not sell this unless it goes below 10. If that's too big of a risk, then sell half the position. I had mentioned on my previous post that the stop loss is below 10, so if a stock is trading at 13 but you want to risk only $100, then you can buy either 30 shares at 13 or wait for it to come down to 11. I left that part out because everyone has different risk tolerance.
