Narayan Wagle gets Madan Puraskar

KOL Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 31 - The Madan Puraskar Award Trust has decided to present the "Madan Puraskar" for the year 2061 to litterateur and journalist Narayan Wagle for his book entitled ?Palpasa Caf?.?

Palpasa Caf?, the debut novel by Wagle, had created a new "fastest selling" record in the Nepali book publication history. The second edition of the novel has already hit bookstores after 5,000 copies were sold out in the first month of its release in the end of July.

The decision to this effect was taken by a meeting of the trust Wednesday. The award carries a purse of Rs. 200,000.

The 245-page novel has been able to arouse enormous interest and satisfaction among the readers because it highlights contemporary issues facing the country, book critics say.

Wagle is the editor of Kantipur daily.

Likewise, the trust decided to present this year?s ?Jagadamba Shree Award? to litterateur Phanindra Raj Khetala in recognition of his more than half-century long service to the field of Nepali literature. The award also carries a purse of Rs. 200,000. (snn)

Congratulations to Narayan Wagle!

I can't comment on his book because I have yet to get hold of a copy and read it, though -- thanks to the publisher Kiran of Nepalaya -- I know that a signed-by-the-author copy is waiting for me in Kathmandu.

Narayan is an immensely likable guy. That, plus his being the editor of Kantipur makes him a really powerful figure in Nepal. Besides, all the young journalists adore him. All these combine to make it virtually impossible for his book to get a 'bad' review in Nepal.

Some observations on the prize, and, as a no-nonsense long-time friend of Narayan, I hope he tolerates my raising these issues here.

1. Narayan's book came out just two months ago or so. Now it's already won Nepal's most prestigious literature prize.

I can't help thinking: Isn't the prize for Narayan a little too soon, too early, too fast?
I mean, the book is getting ecstatic reviews and is still in its ''honeymoon' phase,
so to speak . . . surely Narayan's winning it NEXT year perhaps would have been
more appropriate, I'd think.

2. By giving the prize to Narayan this fast this soon, are the prize committee members (who are anonymous) sending a signal to the market that they seriously consider even the very recent books of first-time novelists?

3. I am confused: Madan Purasakar has this image of being really stuffy, dowdy and too mustily Nepali lit. It usually goes to people with three long names such as . . . Krishna Prasad Parajuli. Is the Prize Committee trying to be hip and young and oh-so-relevant in contemporary times by giving the prize to Narayan? Alternatively, is it trying to piggy-back on the poularity of Narayan's novel?

Just some food for thought.

Once again, congrats to Narayan.

I haven't seen any novel changing the world.War and Peace ddin't change the world. Mahabharat and Ramayan, even Gita couldn't change the world. It may instigate a new thought process but only to those who are already in the state of accepting change not the whole world. So if i understood, literature is trash. we are shitting over the trash.

When Doesteyvksy was publsihing Crime and Punishment... he almost stop finishing that movel.

All for entertainment...... they did so.

Not for money!!

But nowadays you can buy a software in China that can write 20,000 types of love letter for you. And yes, it's hot selling. Should it get award? Why need award? Already got money....

But Wagle needs money and award.. ha ha.. chi chi pani papa pani !!! Lobh Lobh. Mancchhe lai thagne bato.

does that mean, if wagle goes for money , he shouldn't go for award, or he should go for award, he shouldn't go for money. If he gets both as he may do, its lobh, lobh. it's not lobh, I see jealousy. Gayoun nyascha, Dareharu....

Prem,

Books are commodities -- easy to catalog, market, sell and distribute.
Whoever does it faster and cheaper stands to make a lot of money.

Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos, with zero previous book-selling experience, used this
insight to sell books (and now sells many other things too).

Other than that, neither Narayan Wagle nor Kiran Shrestha is "greedy".
They have worked hard for their rewards.

You do NOT know them.

Still, that does not stop you from blatantly accusing them of things they are not and of things they did not do. Keep it up, for it will do wonders to your credibility.

Oh!

Thank you for letting us all know that:

you tried doing that,
enjoyed it,
and being PREM-i of such activities, and
are now forcefully recommending such activities to others on Sajha.

You go ahead with your enjoyment of such activities.
I don't think others are interested.

Thanks, and best wishes.

Sometime, I see this guy is talking real serious things, even though, completely biased by his own misconception and incorrect perception. little bit jealous too, don't take it bad. I prefer this over inferiority complex. he makes some bold incredible claims. And, when he give up, he takes a deep breath and starts barking. Good way to dissipate frustration of being cluless.

We all know from your comments that you are aware of all the bad things in the world. A kind of smartness. But you are in trouble if this "maha gyan" is just because of obsession. I hope not.

Looks like Ashu's temperature has really gone up when he was accused of doing chakadhi of those publishers and writer as Ashu himself being capitalistic market oriented expert. He is simply defending defending those guys making money.... but hey, when you make more money at the same you are also making somebody poor, isn't it? So Ashu, you better keep quiet.. you are not gonna win this debate and the way you are trying to save those publishers and Wagle jee. Who knows perhaps you actually do chakadhi saying "I respect this or that popular person, but..." Anyways don't think that you are contributing here with your bullshits.

???????????????? Does that make clear to you? ?????????????

yeah it's clear enough.

Truth doesn't require loud voice or capital text. it remains the same old truth in any rhetoric. irony !! A guy sick of superiority complex believes what he speaks is an ultimate truth.

Truth doesn't come from a stubborn bigot 's head.
It doesn't come from those who can't accept that there is someone , somewhere who deserves credit for his work.
It doesn't come from one who is the first to comment and doesn't remotely care to know the issue.
It doesn't come from those who think that one can see the whole earth from a side.
And not at all from those who can't accept the comment and alternate opinions.

"that's it"

?????? ????? ???

>>when you make more money at the same you are also making somebody poor, isn't it?<<

Narayan Wagle wrote a novel.
The novel was his hard work.

Kian Shrestha marketed it.
It was his hard work.

Both have become very successful.

Their success comes from their own hard work and NOT at the expense of others.

Other publishers and writers do NOT become poorer because of these two people's success. If anything, these two shown NEW ways of doing well in Nepal, and that's great.

****************
Life is NOT a zero-sum game -- where for you to win (and be successful and rich and whatever), someone else must lose (and be a failure and poorer). One's succcess need not come at the expense of others.

And the size of the pie is NOT fixed --where if you take a larger slice, someone else must have a smaller slice.

I have a lot of respect for Nepalis who, by their own hard work, open a shop, earn a degree, write a novel, cut an album, raise a child, do things to win awards . . . whatever.

If that respect, in all its forms, is to be mistaken as "chakadi" by some Nepalis, then
so be it.

Here's a different example of another hardworking Nepali who lost everything, and is tryhing to get his life back on track:
