प्रशान्त तामाङ दार्जिलिङको तुङसुङवासी हुन् र हाल कोलकत्ता पुलिसको सिपाहीमा कार्यरत छन्। उनी कोलकत्ता पुलिसको “अर्केष्ट्रा ब्यान्ड” का गायक हुन्। ४ जनवरी १९८३ मा दार्जिलिङ को तुङसुङ भन्ने स्थानमा आमा रुपा तामाङ र स्व.बाबु मदन तामाङको कोखबाट जन्मिएका प्रशान्तका दुई दिदी अनुपमा र अर्चना छन्। प्रशान्त दार्जिलिङको स्थानीय सेन्ट रोवर्टस स्कुलमा पढ्दै गर्दा कोलकत्ता पुलिसमा कार्यरत उनका बुबाको अचानक निधन भएपछि घरमा आर्थिक स्थिति र्टार्न हम्मेहम्मे पर्दै थियो। प्रशान्तको माध्यमिक परिक्षा सन् २००२ मा थियो तर उनले आफ्ना बाबुको स्थानमा कोलकत्ता पुलिसमा काम पाउने पक्का भएपछि आफ्नो घरको आर्थिक स्थितिलाई टार्नको निम्ति पढ्ने मन हुंदा हुंदै कोलकत्ता पुलिसमा सिपाहीको रुपमा भर्ती भए। कलम समाउने बेलामा उनी खाकी लुगा लगाएर कोलकत्ताको गल्ली गल्ली पुलिसको डन्ठा समाउदै हिडे। कोलकत्ता पुलिसका जोइन्ट कमिशनर अफ पुलिस साथै एडिसनल कमिशनर जुल्फीकर हसन र डेप्युटी कमिशनर अफ पुलिस राजेश सुवर्ण (हाल दार्जिलिङ जिल्लाका एस.पी.) ले कोलकत्ता पुलिसमा २००५ मा एउटा ब्यान्ड स्थापना गरे जसलाई अर्केष्ट्रा ब्यान्ड भनि नामाकरण दिए। त्यही ब्यान्डमा प्रशान्त मुख्य गायकको रुपमा कार्यरत भए। जुन ब्यान्डको लक्ष्य गाउं गाउंमा गएर त्यहां रहेका एनजिओहरुसित मिलेर कार्यक्रम संचालन गर्नु रहेको थियो। जसको लक्ष्य साधारण जनताहरुसंग पुलिसको सम्बन्ध बढाउनु थियो।

कसरी सहभागी भए प्रशान्त इण्डियन आइडियलमा ?

सोनी च्यानलले शुरु गरेको इण्डियन आइडियल कार्यक्रममा एउटा कार्यक्रम भारतको उत्तर पूर्वी राज्यहरुको निम्ति कोलकोत्तामा राखिएको थियो। जसमा सहभागी जनाउन चाहाने प्रतियोगीहरुले मोवाईल फोनबाट एसएमएसद्धारा आफ्नो नाम दर्ता गर्नुपर्ने थियो। जसमा प्रशान्तले पनि आफ्नो नाम दर्ता गरे लगभग १२ हजार जनामा प्रशान्त पनि सहभागी बनेर एकसय तीस जनामा छानिए। त्यस पछि फेरी २२ जनामा छानिए र उनि मुम्बई आए। जहां समग्र भारतबाट मात्र नभएर अन्य मुलूकहरुबाट पनि प्रतियोगीहरु आएका छन् र मुख्य २८ जना प्रतियोगीहरु चुनिए जसमा प्रशान्त पनि परे। २८ जना प्रतियोगीहरुको एकल गायनलाई सोनी टि.भी.ले पियानो राउन्ड नाम दिएको थियो, जसबाट टपटेन प्रतियोगीहरु छानिए र यसरी टपटेन प्रतियोगीहरु छानिदा प्रशान्त तामाङ पनि इण्डियन आइडियलको टपटेनको गाला राउण्डमा छानिए। अब उनलाई धेरै भन्दा धेरै भोट दिएर इण्डियन आईडल बनाउनु तपाई हाम्रो कतर्व्य हो।

प्रशान्तलाई नेपाली संगीतकार, कलाकार र निर्देशकको सपोर्ट

नेपाली चलचित्र क्षेत्रका वरिष्ठ संगीतकार रञ्जित गजमेर इण्डियन आईडलमा प्रशान्त तामाङ पुग्नु सबै नेपालीहरुको लागि गर्वको कुरा भएको बताउनु हुन्छ। उहाँले हामी सबैले उसको सफलताको लागि विशेष पहल गर्नु पर्ने बताउनु भयो। नेपाली चलचित्र क्षेत्रका चर्चित कलाकार (खलनायक) सुनिल थापाले प्रशान्त इण्डियन आईडलमा टपटेनमा आउनु एउटा नेपालीहरुको गर्वको कुरा रहेको उल्लेख गर्दै उहाँले प्रशान्तलाई इण्डियन आईडल बनाउनको लागि सबैले एसएम एस गरेर सर्पोट गर्नुपर्ने बताउनुभयो। उहाँले प्रवासमा रहेका यूवाहरुलाई आफूले गर्ने फजुल खर्चबाट बचाएर प्रशान्तलाई भोटिङ गरेर जिताउन र नेपालीहरुको नाम उच्च राख्न समेत आब्हान गर्नुभयो। यसैगरी नेपाली चलचित्र क्षेत्रकै चर्चित निर्देशक नारायण पुरीले पनि प्रशान्तलाई सम्पूर्ण नेपालीहरुले सर्पोट गर्नु पर्ने बताउदै उनमा एउटा सफल गायक बन्ने खुबी रहेको बताउनु भयो।

चर्चाको शिखरमा प्रशान्त (Indian Idol-3)

प्रशान्त तामाङ यतिबेला चर्चाको शिखरमा पुगेका छन्। सोनी टेलिभिजन बाट प्रशारण हुने इण्डिया आईडलमा सामान्य परिवारमा जन्मिएको एक नेपाली ठिटो प्रशान्त टपटेनमा पुगेपछि उनलाई देश-विदेशबाट लाखौं स्रोताहरुको सपोर्ट मिलेको छ। यतिबेला दार्जीलिङ, सिक्किम, कालेबुङ, खर्साङ, सिलगढी, डुर्वस लगाएतका सबै सडक गल्लीहरुमा प्रशान्त छाएका छन्।

उनका तस्वीर र हस्ताक्षरले भरिएका ब्यानरहरु चोक चोकहरुमा लगाईएको छ। चारैतिर प्रशान्तको चर्चा परिचर्चा भैरहेको छ अझ भनौ भने प्रशान्तमय बनेको छ दार्जीलिङ। मुर्म्बईमा समेत प्रशान्तको सफलताको लागि लाखौं नेपालीहरुले भोट दिएका छन्। उनलाई प्रत्येक शुक्रबार राती साढे ९ बजे देखि २५२५ मा प्रशान्तको कोड नम्बर सहित एसएमएस गर्न सकिन्छ । साथै फोन गरेर पनि उनलाई भोट दिन सकिन्छ। दार्जीलिङ मात्रै हैन नेपालमा समेत प्रशान्तको सर्पोटमा विराटनगर, पोखरा र काठमाण्डौमा समेत संगीतप्रेमी यूवा युवतीहरुले तुल र ब्यानरको साथमा र्‍यालीहरु गरेका छन्। ‘विश्वभरका नेपालीले मत दिन पाए प्रशान्त अवश्य सफल हुने थिए।’ कामना गरौं, प्रशान्तको यात्राले गति लिन सकोस्। नेपालीको गौरवको रुपमा प्रशान्तलाई लिईएको छ। यतिबेला सबै तिरबाट एउटै आवाज छ वि वान्ट प्रशान्त, भोट फर प्रशान्त । प्रशान्तको लागि अरबीयन राष्ट्रहरुबाट पनि हज्जारौ भोटहरु प्राप्त भएको छ।

हस्ताक्षरको लागि दार्जीलिङदेखि मुम्बईसम्म


प्रशान्तको सर्पोट र प्रचार-प्रचार तथा हस्ताक्षरको लागि दार्जीलिङदेखि दैनिक पत्रिका हिमालयन दपर्णद्धारा तयार पारिएको ब्यानर लिएर रिपोर्टर ज्ञानेन्द्र अर्याल समेत मुर्म्बई आईपुगेका छन्। एक हप्ता अघि मुम्बई आई पुगेका अर्यालले प्रशान्तलाई भेटी उनको सपोर्टमा लाखौं स्रोताहरु रहेको बताउनु भयो। मुर्म्बई आउनुअघि कोलकत्ता पुलिस फोर्समा (जहाँ प्रशान्त कार्यरत थिए) पुगेर अर्यालले हस्ताक्षर संकलन गर्नुभएको थियो। अर्याल मुम्बईमा समेत प्रशान्तको सर्पोटको लागि एक र्‍याली र हस्ताक्षर संकलन गर्न आएको बताउनुहुन्छ।

“My senior officers will decide my future”

Very rarely do you meet a policeman who can sing romantic songs. Indian Idol contestant Prashant Tamang, from Darjeeling, is a constable with Kolkata police who dreamt of becoming a singer. Though he never received any training, he listened to songs and picked up tunes. Once in the force, he joined its orchestra group and soon became popular.

Today, with the encouragement of his seniors and fellow constables, he is one of the 11 finalists of Indian Idol. Now, this soft-spoken policeman dreams of becoming a playback singer.

A singing policeman on the stage of Indian Idol. How did this happen?

I am a police constable. I joined Kolkata police force in 2002 and was in the special action force till 2006. At the end of 2006, an orchestra was formed within the department and I got a chance to perform in it. I gained a lot of confidence facing the audience there.

I never really watch Indian Idol, I never had the time. My seniors and colleagues encouraged me to participate and it is because of them that I am here today.

Despite being in special action force, did you secretly dream of becoming a singer?

Yes, I did dream of becoming a singer, but never thought it was possible. My father was in police and so my family expected me to become a policeman, too. But now I have the support of my colleagues.

Are you married? Or do you have a girlfriend?

No, I am not married. And I don’t have a girlfriend yet.

How do you rate your chances of winning the title?

Every contestant here is talented, some of them much more than me. I can win only if I perform really well. I want to request the janta to vote for the best singers. True talent should come up. India needs good singers and the deserving one should get the votes.

I don’t want to leave my friends behind just to climb the ladder. They’re like my family now. It makes me sad when anyone is eliminated.

Will you give up your job if you win the title?

If I win the title, I will do is talk to my seniors in the force and consult them about what to do. I’ve to get their permission. Of course, I dream of becoming a playback singer, but at the moment there are tough decisions to be taken.

I cannot leave the police force. It is because of them that I am here today. We’ll just have to see what happens later.

Which music directors do you dream of working with?

My favourite music directors are Jatin Lalit. If I win, and get a chance to sing for them, it will be a dream come true.

Who is your favourite judge and why?

Anu Maliik. He is very straightforward and says what is right, on your face. I don’t feel bad about it—it is important that we know our flaws at this stage.

Why are the performances a little low key in the Galas?

Yes, I agree the performances are not up to the mark. I guess we all are very tense and under pressure. Performances will definitely be better this week. I am trying hard to improve my performance.

You looked good in your suit. Are you concentrating on grooming yourself?

If we look good, we will become popular and thus get more votes. That is the only reason for my interest in designer clothes. Now that we have designers working for us, I would definitely like to take advantage of the opportunity.

Any message for your fans?

I am the first Nepali to be on this stage. I am sure my achievement is a matter of pride for the whole Nepali community across the world.

I heard that in next gala... once again judge javed akhtar indireclty give racist remarks by saying people should stop voting on the basis of region,community and caste.. I beleive it was more to do with prashant

Today, I was shocked by the attitude of some judges of Indian Idol about Prashant Tamang. Today was the day of elimination and in bottom danger zone there were: Abhishek Kumar, Charu Semwal, Deepali and Puja Chatterjee.

Obviously, some judges did not like this matter. Anu Malik frankly said that Prashant Tamang did not deserve to remain safe. He even said that Prashant Tamang knew this in his heart that he did not sang well.

I felt disgusted from this kind of bad attitude from Anu towards Prashant Tamang. Prashant Tamang is a good singer and that is why thousands of fans are still with him and they are trying their best to make him Indian Idol. He has brought pride and hope for millions of ordinary people in eastern part of India and even in Nepal. Prashant Tamang is not from a rich and elite family. Perhaps, this is his only fault. Prashant Tamang has the guts to struggle and thrive.

Anu Malik does not need to like Prashant. I know that millions of people like him around the world.
