I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me.

This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector.

I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money.

If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position.

Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting.

Have a happy new year!!!! May 2007 bring you and your family lots of joys and riches.

TT,

be in the cash. Does not look good for tomorrow either. And then, you know, Mondays follow Fridays as per Smith. I am still making my take on that.

Best~!

I have Q.

It's holding up surprisingly well despite the bad news. Also the short interest on it for last month was pretty high. the ratio was 4.2.

So, I'm optimistic about it. I have a 7 cent loss. But it should get covered in no time.

Good start to the markets. NASDAQ gapped up so we should see a pullback in the techs before we see a good rally.

I'm still optimistic about CMGI and Q.

GROW seems like it is headed for another rally and Microsoft seems interesting along with INTC.

Funny how whenever I read analysts report, the somehow DONT WORK- perhaps in the much longer horizon they do which is where the institutions focus on.

And the biggest example of herd mentality is Fool.com- where they let individual investors pik stocks and rate them according to some kind of voting system. that for me is the worst place to look for stocks.

Just a morning idea. Have a good day everyone!

TT,
yes it is going green for most part. More on Nasdaq side of stuff.

ani, stay away from Q. If you are in, you will be in for "long".... personal feel of mine only hai..

I hold CMGI, NFLX and SUNW.... took another loss on RADS.

I have STEC and NLST for watchglass. Both are major target for Acquisition in long term. Especially the later.

Happy Trading Day!

Best~!

ps Emini ji, can you enlighten me on "New Mutual Fund" on global emerging market? If you hold one, please share, if you will.

Bri:

My proble is patience. I think I need to practice holding and see how it behaves for a week or two. Most of my trades are choppy- over a month or so, they perform really well but I just dont have that "patience".

My mum, who's metter than me, lol...keeps stressing on it.

Besides, I'll break even on Q so I'm gonna hold.

and I'm glad the market came back today. Weekend again!!!! time to buckle up!

TT Bhai,

Yes, it could be. Tara you can learn to practice patience. I would rather advise you to evolve with time. It will come. You already have all the needed base to be a very powerful person. So there you go!

Read some on Dalai Lama, some on Gandhi. Then mix it with Nietzsche, Rand and the likes. And you are now a very learned person. Need not goto school... hahahha.

any good news on internship front?

best and have a great weekend.

Hey Bri:

Thanks for the advice. I've read Gandhi twcie- back in Nepal.

And I recently bought a copy of it from Chapters...LMAO. funny you should mention him.

And Dalai Lama- well after reading Gandhi, I think the reading is all there. And Ayn Rand seems too hardcore for me. I'm a simple guy. Objectivism is too much to think of- besides I wanna do something back home to contribute to the Nepali society- something not quite Ayn Randish?

And for internships- I turned one down from chicago...they wanted me to work thru winter and I thought, heck no. I need to be done with school. It was a trading position, risk arbitrage, quantitative trading that kind of thing. Too bad I missed the boat there. But hopefully, once I'm done, these big investment banks and/or hedge funds will see what I'm worth. GPA= not so good. Extracurricular experience= crazy good.

I need to complete MY DERIVATIVES COURSE AAARRGGHHHH!!!! It's preliminary but I wanna master Hull's Book at the same time with this other book.

Anybody here heard of John C. Hull? His book on derivatives is a must for most (if not all) business schools and I have the quantitative version. So while I may not be attending school, I am studying a whole lot this summer. GRR...lol

Weekend's here. Plans????

The Hang Seng has gapped up. Perhaps due to the US rally but that is definitely a positive tune for the North American markets.

How's everyone else doing? Bri, had a good weekend?

I'm excited and anxious about the coming weeks.

TT Bhai,

so summer for ya looks like lots of reading on the anvil. Good luck with all that.

Hope you had a great weekend. I has a nasty one. Lots of self-intro moments. Gotta figure out what is wrong with my batting. Got out on duck for 3rd time in the season... hhhmm.. it is unprecedented, hence I have to learn of it. Spent some in the "Mandir" to kool myself..

Back to stocks, so what are we going to pick for this week? I did not find much time to think on it this week-end. But spoke to couple of guys where were x-traders, all of them say the same, stay away. hahahhaha...

have a great trading week.

Best~!

Hi all, I had a question and this seemed appropriate enough place to put it..
Is there any way to short the market without opening a margin account?
Thanks in advance...

Bri:
Here are the top news as are "screaming out" from my watchlist.

1. CMGI: If it breaks above the 50 level, I would buy it tomorrow probably
2. DYN: It broke above resistance If it continues its rally, I'll buy it tomorrow- I expect some pullback though.
3. SMTC and GNTX: My picks from last week. they culd be a classic I TOLD YOUUUUU scenario. I cudve reaped some good ones had I held on to this one- at least 6% in one week.(But I am cautious still like with any other mentioned here, especially CMGI)
4. I'm holding on to Q for the moment- wanna see how far this can go.
5. I'm reiterating my positive stance on EMC and INTC for the long upside and have KOG is an excellent candidate above 6.40

o_o: (or however you spell it lol)

If you don;t know that, i'll be honest with you, you really shouldnt be shorting. NO broker will let you short without a margin account. Besides, what's the need to short right now? We're in an uptrend. If you're a short seller, 7 times out of 3, you're bound to be crushed and it's a waste of time to be looking for those 3 chances.

So yeah, you CANNOT open an account to short without having a margin account because what you're doing is depositing a "good faith" money because the downside when you short is theoretically infinite- you can lose more than what you have. So you need some money to cover your losses and in case you are unable to fill the margin requirement, the broker simply liquidates your position to SAVE YOU from financial and emotional disaster. Losses from shorting are far more degrading to your emotions and finances.

Ok, it seems like a slightly weak day.

And this is the kind of article NOONE SHOULD READ!!!!

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/103017/joining-the-5-million-club-takes-an-open-mind

claims like:
[The path to riches usually involves the kind of risk that would make most people feel a little queasy.]

[Perhaps not surprisingly, none of them had a cushy union job down at the DMV. The vast majority — 80% — either started their own business or worked for a small company that saw explosive growth.]

and all that usual traits that people define that are inherent in millionaires, they're baseless claims.

Now this is my opinion. But I think I personally know hundreds of people who are as dilligent, or more, than those "self-starting " millionaires and never struck it rich. They work all their lives on "relevant" business that they started and NEVER make it.

Bill Gates is smart you say? Maybe. Business savvy? Not even close! He was plainnnn lucky to have bought out someone else's product, tweaked it and sold it to IBM- one of the biggest fortune turn arounds in history.

I was raised in a lower middle class family and now that I'm in my early 20s I still belong to one. I've seen people come and go trying to be rich. Some have mde it, some havent.

the bottom line is such articles sevre two purposes:
1. for themselves- they sell, hence generating ad revenue by creating a significant rreader base
2. they demoralize you. if you have had a lot of readings on "how to be rich" well you shouldn;t be rich anyways. Those who are rich, are becoming one- they're not reading books and those who aren't are writing such articles or reading them.

A case in point is Robert Kiosaki who is believed to amassed a majority of his 100 million net worth simply through the sale of his book. Now it strikes me, why arent the people who read his book, NOT even as close as he is in terms of wealth?

The answer? These articles, books, journals teach you nothing. Heck, there shouldn't be a "teaching" methodology or artcle on how to strike it rich.

If you are gonna do something, do it. Most of the times, people change their careers and interests simply to be rich. Well, they fal misrably.

Being a millionaire is in your had and heart and not in the bank. STOP READING THOSE GODDAMNED ARTICLES!

Thanks for the advice Timetraveller... Your advsie is well taken to heart... but I was still wondering if there were any other tools (e.g. derivatives like options el al.) that I won't need to have a margin account to short an stock or the whole market...

You have a great list in front of you.. but for the time being, I, personally wouldn't want to jump in any... You seem to be a techinical investor judging by your comments... Can't you see the market is oversold right now? I think we should expect a sesonal correction right here looking at the techincals.. I myself look at the fundamentals of the company.. Here is one which has made me a ton of money and still looking fwd in the future.. Little bit expensive than what you have but will pay off for sure... BEAV.. is in a slight pullback but I'd buy it in a couple of days...

Looking fwd to some of your other recommendation and explanations if possbile...

Happy trading...
