A Nepali student, Dr. Pukar Malla, has been elected as the President of
the Harvard Graduate Council for the academic year 2010/11.

Malla
is a Masters in Public Administration candidate at the Harvard Kennedy
School of Government. This is the first time that a Nepali national has
been elected to such an esteemed position at Harvard.

The
graduate council is a representative student government of the twelve
graduate and professional schools at Harvard and serves the interests of
the 13,600 graduate students at Harvard. The council advocates student
issues to the central administration, fosters cross-university
collaboration and nurtures social ambience among the graduate students,
according to fellow Harvard student Bisundev Mahato.

Malla's team
recently organised the inaugural Harvard Leadership Conference, where
300 students and 41 speakers participated. Former Prime Minister of
Haiti, Michele Pierre-Louis, Rear Admiral Susan Blumenthal and US
Congressman Ed Markey were the keynote speakers. This year, the council
also aims to officialise university-wide student groups.

Malla
finished his high schooling in Nepal from St. Xavier's and
Budhanilkantha schools. In the US, he has been educated at acclaimed
institutions including Swarthmore, Cornell and Harvard. He has been an
active member of the Nepali community in the US. He is the Co-Founder
and Secretary General of the global Nepali youth movement, Nepal Ko
Yuwa. He is an International Coordination Council member of the NRN
Association and a Co-Founder of the Computer-Association of Nepal - USA.

Sajhawileaks,
I am proud of Nepal but not nepalis though. Dont get me wrong here, I dont want society or culture feeding me information and make me judge what is right and wrong, I rather prefer free thinking. Yes, Nepal is piece of land in this globe but a country cannot be country without its people and you know how nepalis are including me, wink wink.
Pictures from personal life. Common !!!we or I dont care about pictures. It has nothing to do with what we are discussing. Nobody has to prove him here he is innocent and down to earth, we already seem to know him now.
Don't compel people to appreciate you , let them appreciate you themselves from their heart. If you are good enough, you dont have to advertise your personal day to day life and hardwork in public forum, people will find you and truly appriciate your work from their heart. Mother teresa never needed sajha to explain her dids neither did other great persons who changed world. Again kudos for his achievements as person  but personally to me at this point of time, its not so impressing me. Goodluck with your campaign for fame too.

8848,

I can understand your frustation. Dont you agree , Anu didi was from nepal . She was a part of our society and she proved one can become beautiful lotus in dirty water. She was a nepali. I amnot related to Dr. malla in anyway, but I extend my joy in his joy. If he wants publicity, I will put my both hand and clapped so that if he can channelized his postive energy to more constructive work.

I dont how you relate mother teresa and sajha and dr malla. But I am sure Dr. malla and sajha can be related as both are associated with nepal. May be he can be even related to OBama as both are from same school. Thats why you are fast to delete your own comment, which school obama went to.You dont even know. You dont even know. You dont even know. You just want to become devils advocate just putting your point to win.

Who knows tomorrow wht future malla might have as harvard as proven track their gradaute will become atleast average citizen of the world. I might guess 8848 who never can study science or secure good marks, or never got admission to engineering college even giving entrance exam 10 times. You might have ended in america with fake refugee documents, otherwise you dont have ability to get in here. Yo timro bus ko kura hoina, you might have graduated from some school in alaska who is not able to give gmat or always envy with other achievements and hit back when is the appropriate time.

Sorry, for hard word.

Atleast he is going to school in nepal and giving lectures how one can get higher education in america. I read in some thread that st.xavier and BKNS student knew everything in advance and thats why they r in ivy league. He is doing his duty , educating to smaller n younger generation for free.

I have put Pictures to stop defamation. and not to impress you. but to show we all are from that poor , old  society but he takes pride in wht he is, where he is from, He has walked down in the same dirty, pot holed roads just like u and me, but takes pride in celebrating culture and tradition, vows to make change, ask us to join in our common agenda.

Person who posted this topic is not Pukar for sure. At least udchman would have cited the news where he/she got from ..ekantipur.com  if I am not wrong.

Pukar, we are really proud of you! Do what you do the best!

I can't believe how some ppl are reacting so negatively. What's wrong with you ppl?!! Jealousy, ignorance or just  lack of appreciation for other ppl?!

Reading the comments from the likes of 8848m and Sirjana etc just proves that no matter what you do, there are people who find negative in it. I remember a jerk who came here after Anuradha Koirala won the CNN prize and said something like she might be disqualified.

Seriously, guys, If you can't be happy in someone's progress, then you won't have much of happiness in your life.

As for Ivy League and all that, it takes a lot to get into those schools. They are not everything, and it is true that some students from University of Nebraska may possess better intelligence than those in Ivy. But in general, it is hard to get into Ivy, it is hard to get good ranking in Ivy and so on. The quality of professors in Ivy is often unparalleled. However, having an Ivy degree in itself doesn't mean everything, and we have to continue to work hard in our life. Look, even getting a good job is not everything.

Having said this, I have met very few individuals who are as motivated in doing things as Pukar. So, if Pukar decides to stay here or works for international organization, I am sure he will be successful and that is his right. If he goes home, he is likely to be able to do more things than alot of you here.

Hmm  interesting, i will be happy when they find primeminister and constititution. His success is not mine neither Obama's success is mine .You can generalise everybody success as yours, which is nice of yours but why dont we try to live in reality rather than theoritical lectures. I bet nobody would concern  where he ends after Harvard or before harvard if this individual was introduced here OR was not from nepal. That is solely his success and Sajhaleaks i sure did not know where obama graduate from , why would i need to know, none of my buisness to know where he graduated or went to school, but was just wondering how many people knew about it which i figured out most of us would know it huh. Do you know where Dr. Baburam Bhattarai went to school then? Again you might track students of Harvards always end up in something big and students from trichandra will always end up teaching colleges in Nepal  but i dont care where you get degree from, I care what you have done after or with that degree.

The whole point of mine is stress on SCHOOL you go or where you come from? I know big companies prefer graduates from these school but general public  " Jai Jai Kars" for graduates from these expensive and one saying hard school to get in  is just being overrated. And graduates themselves from these school dont count others as an student. IF you are doing PHD from university of oklohoma ( I dont know it offers or not but just an example) then you would not care that much but if somebody does from Harvard then He is more successful than other PHD fellow because of the name of institution.

Do you mean Doctor or Engineers from university of nebraska are less qualified than universities like this. Is not there specific requirements be done to get these degrees. Education has been commercialised and totally advertised. Now these institutions are changing face of college education. The expensive and high rated college you go, the more smart you are , more paid jobs you are getting although you are same qualification and degree. Its not fair game. A "A" student is a student whether he graduates from Trichandra or Harvard. You are being sold because of your certificate ( institute you get certificate from) not because of contribution and qualification.

Again, the reason these universities are overrated because of general public like us. Millions apply thousand get in to those universities, but does that mean remaining student who applied are dumb. Same person Dr Pukar Malla would be treated different if he had same degree from another university by you guys. Now think about this.

People, it is nice of your to embrace other success in your arms but real world is different. Theoritically, I will say i am proud but Pukar malla's success getting in Harvard has nothing to do with general publics success. I see him as an individual not as whole country. Individaul successes are theirs although you might put sweet words and clap your hands. Again, noone knows the future but we gotta wait for right time to say he made us proud.

Every individual persons success is your success ( again why only Mr. Malla, every citizens of Nepals success should be your success, what you call success ( depends). Vague.

Thanks guys for the response.

Wow people can be so ridiculously malicious. Pukar Malla didn't post his credentials on his facebook to show off. Everyone posts their work/school information on fb. If someone else rips off the info and pastes here on sajha, its not his fault.

A simple post about some Nepali doing amazing for himself always ends up becoming the topic of verbal blasts of scrutiny. Personally, I take it as an inspiration. Don't sit here trying to bring anyone down and if you can't say a few words of appreciation, just move the [Disallowed String for - bad word] on. Kudos to Pukar!

Congratulations, Pukar! You make us proud.

@8848--Pukar is the General Secretary for the global organization Nepal Ko Yuwa, which works towards inspiring youth to do amazing things. He's still in school. Stop pulling leg, and move on.

 Harvard worshiping is pointless, I agree. But blasting someone for his accomplishment चाही बबाल नेपाली परा भयो यार; पचेन

@Pire @Ashu
Great comments.

I am proud of Pukar, as of many other students who have optimism and are working hard to make their dreams come true.

Pire,

Nothing against you, but University of Nebraska has had notable alumni. From Nobel Laureates to Pulitzer prize winners among many others. So I agree to you that it is not about Ivy league school you go to, it is about the personality you grow after you graduate from wherever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_Nebraska%E2%80%93Lincoln_people#Pulitzer_Prize

& I am a proud alumni.

Je pani new hundo raichha. There are so many silent Nepali guys that freakin' Nepalis should be proud of but they don't  prefer to show off. H ma puer matra hunchha?  Andho desh ko kaano raja bhaneko yehi ho.  Education is one aspect of life, not something that defines life.

I liked what Nagarikreport said. i personally don't find any difference between fake Nepali asylees and most hardvard and ivy league Nepali students. i don't know pukar personally so i don't mean this for him, but MOST   Nepali students just like fake Nepali asylees have gained their admission with some sob story about beign poor and underprivillaged from Nepal while they belong to some rich corrupted family most of the time who can offord to get them admitted in rato bangala or budanilkantha. those schools know all kinds of tricks including how to write sorry arse fake cry stories to how to cheat in sat by sending someone else or how to come up with exgaggerated marks and recommendations to get some charity from the ivy leage recruters who think they are actually helping someone needy from Nepal. why should some liar like that receive more respect than some hardworking student graduating from a community college busting his balls day and night to come up with tution.
