I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me.

This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector.

I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money.

If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position.

Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting.

Have a happy new year!!!! May 2007 bring you and your family lots of joys and riches.

Anthony, I'll look at those tonight and will let you know. I had recommended SVNT last night. It is up 5% today. LLTC and QQQQ are not doing too bad either.

Nepali Kai: You said that trends do not persist in the market. That is a bunch of baloney. What about business cycles? If business cycles exist then trend exist. Currently the cycle is up, so an uptrend and it is better to buy on pullbacks. Mutual funds lag the index because the portfolio mix does not exactly resemble the market.

Instead of saying this does not work can you please enlighten us and tell us what works? With the above mentioned stocks I'm looking for a huge gain but when it starts going up, I'll get out. I'll take the money and look for someting else orjust sit on cash.

Anthony: I looked at those picks. GOOD JOB. I'm impressed. I think there is more to go for these stocks. What made you buy those stocks? When you say long-term what kind of time frame are you thinking?

Here is another pick: OVEN. Currently trading at 16.18. They do not have any profits as of yet, but this has a potential to be big. If it goes below $13, take your loss.

Anyway, you should know your risk and trade with money that you can afford to lose.

LLTC is coming out with earnings on Wednesday.

WOW.

HOW ARE YOU GUYS ABLE TO COME UP WITH SUCH GREAT PICKS?

I guess I do not have enough time to do research! It's just hard when you're a stoodent!

But I loved those pics by Anthony and eminitrader. I was gonna buy LLTC today but slept in....

DAMN IT!

Here's my pick: RECN and SAPE...what do you guys think? I plan to hold them for about a month.

For those of you who want to gamble. Here are my picks:

STEM, ASTM, CBLI, GERN.

These are all Stem Cell research companies. If the Democrats pass the bill and can get funding from Congress, these could make a lot of money. These are VERY VERY risky plays. Caution advised. I usually don't buy anything under $10. Put these on your watch list.

Well, I don't have full time job to start 401K , any other pension plan nor i have annuity, life insurance policies where I want to keep them for long time..normally i do short selling and but some stocks, i keep them around for some time around 6months-1 year depends on the so many factors like economy, trend and some research...Basically About long term, I keep them till I'm comfortable with them..
i got onto this stock thing as a competition and did simulating trading in ( Investopedia)for 6 months before i managed to put together some money to start. So far I'm not doing that bad..I spend about 1 or 1/2 hour everyday trying to do some reasearch and I have pool of stocks, which I constantly keep an eye on..
..Now abt a year of experience along with classroom learning, i have to trust myself a little bit.. ..i just found out about this thread and it's really great ...kudooooos to all of u..

Anthony: Not a bad way to start. Here is my suggestion (although it is totally up to you): Forget about shorting. Find strong sectors and buy the best performing stocks in the sector.

Here is one place to explore:

If you are not already in the market do not chase it now. Lots of earnings are coming our way and it is hard to tell how those will end up. Look for a pullback to enter. If you are in the marke tand the market has a distribution day, take some of the money out. It is not too take a lot of risk at this point.

Distribution day is when QQQQ, SPY, IWM and DIA all close about 1% down from the previous day.

well eminitrader , if you are corelating market behaviour with business cycle , then i can do nothing apart from sit and laugh at your naivity , how do you corelate a business with the market and the quote , today there is no relationship between what a BUSINESS does and HOW MUCH IT IS PRICED , the business has nothing to do the shift in market and the pricing , if you say they are related , can you explain what happened just a few weeks ago , Motorola said it would have to cut its growth forecast , its share came down , but WHY AN EARTH DID NOKIA TUMBLE , how NOKIA was related to Motorala and its growth forecast you guys at hedge fund call it SYMPHATHY TRADING right , Nokia should have jumped because motorla was cutting its market prediction , so there is no trend and rationality in the market , its all like a torn sheet trapped in the teeth of bloody wolverines
