"Jimmy Carter was there to observe the election and he and his team commended it."

Purush, No doubt that the polls conducted in KTM was fair and honest thanks to the intl media coverage and the army and police prtection provided.  Are you telling me that outside KTm the polls were fair and honest?  I have accepted the outcome but am baffled that people know about such issues and yet remain to stay quiet!  BTW, None of my family or cousins have ever worked for the govt. let alone be politicians!

.It's funny how the 10 year old kids are allowed to vote. I voted once when I was a 12 year old. At that time I thought I was having some fun. But, now I can see why that is so wrong. But, hey a 12 year old teenager doesn't know any better. The people working at the poll-stations are to be blamed if those things happen.

Give it up guys. The Maoists have won as fairly as any RPS (rastriya panchayat sadasya), UML, NC or RPP MP used to win previously. From Deepak Bohara to Mirja Beg to Khum Bahadur Khadka to Shaligram Jamarkattel; from past to present intimiditation tactics have been used in Nepali politics. Deepak Bohara had gunned down a man with his own hand days before the RPS election he first won. If you want to revert back to Rana Bahadur Shah's  days and even behind, there are evidence aplenty. But this election was fair by Nepali standards and these have been dubbed fair by 60,000 observers spread all over the country. Least number of people died and those who died were mostly Maoists (8). Western observers are believed to do decent job everywhere in the world and they were satisfied with our election.

Maoists won in Rolpa and in Kathmandu and in Chitwan and in Morang and in Banke and in Kaski and in Jhapa and everywhere because Nepalis wanted change. People want change thats why they vote for Obama, thats why they defeated John Howard despite Australia doing so well under him. Nepalis were desperate for real change and thats why they chose to test the Maoists for one time. There was no way the lots from NC or UML or RPP were going to offer the change the people were so desperate to see. Good or bad the Maoists were the only option for real change.

Guys not all Nepalis are informed about the whole world. Millions of them dont watch TV, don't surf internet, don't read newspapers like you. They dont give a s*** about what is happening in NK or Russia or Iraq. They don't worry about the 'commies' coz they have nothing to lose. No acres of lands, no bungalows, no business, no nothing they have to fear that they may be seized by the 'commies'. They had to work their arse off before and they are prepared to do the same tomorrow. All they want is peace and a little bit of hope that their life may improve some day.  So when they make their decisions about who to vote they look at the one who is most promising to fulfil their hope. This time they found the promish in Maoists. Thats it. Simply accept that the population of such people exceeds by millions to those who care more about their personal property being snatched by the 'commies' - the ones like you and me who don't have to care about how to survive.

To be honest, I have never trusted the Maoists and never will but I am hopeful that this result may be a blessing in disguise for Nepal. Only time will tell.

Rohit: Very thought out and well written post. I have to agree with your reasonings. I feel sad about our country when the best possible option in people's mind is the commies. Although history has shown all commies to be a failure, maybe there will be some hope if they lean more towards market economy. China has been doing this for the past 30 years and see how far they have come. I was reading an article by Jim Rogers where he mentioned that China is more capitalist than the US itself. Similarly, in West Bengal where there was a communist government but were very advanced as they encouraged foreign investments. It is just the basic philosophy of the commies that robs Peter to pay Paul that scares me. That just takes away the incentive for people to work hard. Why work hard and create something new if the government is going to take it away from you?

This day would have never come if the past administrations had done what they had promised to do. As citizens we should stop expecting things from the government. Government's job is to provide security and maintain law and order. They cannot be expected to solve all the problems.
