Prashant Tamang’s win to become this year’s Indian Idol, watched by millions across the country, has brought to an end several months of competition. Such contests are tailor-made for television, blending the joy of rooting for the underdog with all the ingredients of a good Bollywood film - drama, humour, glamour and, of course, music.

'Indian Idol', and other similar competitions, has generated collective hysteria across the country. Viewers have vicariously lived their own dreams via the participants and every twist and turn in the competition has provided grist for water-cooler conversations in offices and at the dinner table. Another hugely popular talent search on the telly, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, has given top soap operas a run for their money. Viewer engagement with these talent hunts is unprecedented. Participation is immense not only at the level of the contestants, but also of the viewers - they faithfully SMS or call to vote for their favourite contestant. If there is one trend that is apparent, it is that people tend to root for the underdog. Nobody likes an obvious winner.

But this particular round of competition has been made special by the way in which it brought together various ethnic groups in Meghalaya - which have a history of discord - on the same page, at least for a while. As they cheered in chorus for the losing finalist, Amit Paul, ethnic tensions were temporarily suspended. His visits there were greeted with euphoric declarations of support by screaming hordes that compared with the reception the Fab Four might’ve got, back in their day. People came out in support of their idol, taking to the streets to cheer him on.

Everybody, from elderly villagers to politicians, including the chief minister, had one agenda: help make Amit the next Indian Idol. And, indeed, the excitement was not limited to Meghalaya or West Bengal, where the winner, Prashant, hails from. It is an event India as a whole took part in, and had a jolly good time while at it. This season of ‘Indian Idol’ - and other popular talent hunts that are televised - reiterates television’s clout and the role it plays in connecting people via a shared virtual experience.

"Prashant has done all of us proud. His victory in the Indian Idol contest has lifted the morale of the Gorkha people," said Mr Chinlop Lepcha, a member of Prashant Fan Club, Kalimpong. In Kalimpong, a three-day holiday will be observed to celebrate Prashant's achievement.
Over 5,000 people, including students, government officials and others thronged the streets here today to celebrate Prashant's victory. The state wore a festive look today. It was a Diwali-like atmosphere, with people bursting crackers throughout the day today. The celebrations which started last night after Prashant was crowned Indian Idol in a colourful programme in New Delhi, intensified today, with people greeting each other and exchanging sweets. Members of the Prashant Fan Club, Gangtok, organised a mass rally from Tadong to Gangtok, covering 7 km. Students from various schools, members of several social organisations and associations participated in the rally that culminated at Palzor Stadium here.

JUBILAtion: Indian Idol-3 winner Prashant Tamang (left) and runner-up Amit Paul cherish victory in New Delhi on Sunday night.

Siliguri: As Prashant Tamang, 24, was crowned ‘Indian Idol-3’ at the finale of the two-month-long talent hunt, celebrations erupted in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, from where he hails.

The revelry started as soon as actor John Abraham announced the name on Sunday night. People from different walks of life burst crackers, and hugged and applied colour powder on one another.

Fireworks boomed. Decorations with lights, flags and festoons were everywhere. A large number of people from the region had voted by means of SMS for him since September 21.

Educational institutions in the region had a holiday on Monday. Processions were taken out in Darjeeling Sadar, Kurseong and Kalimpong. The district administration deployed extra security in the hills.

Happy in Bhutan

In Gangtok, people, particularly the youth, celebrated with firecrackers. People who were glued to their television sets during the live telecast featuring Tamang and Amit Paul, a native of Meghalaya, as contenders, instantly started celebrations as the name of the young man from Darjeeling was announced. They congratulated one another. Many young people took to the streets and raised slogans such as ‘Prashant Zindabad.’ The celebrations continued throughout the night in many places. — PTI

More and more Indians groove to digital music
Tuesday September 25 2007 00:00 IST
Business & Economy News Bureau

MUMBAI: Music in India seems to be a huge thrill and it doesn't really take an Indian Idol contestant to go gaga about the latest tunes floating around.

With the onset of gadgets like MP3 players, iPods, mobile phones with such players, it's obvious that this catching on to music has become a habit. A single glance around you while walking on the street and you would lose count of the number of youngsters, teens and even adults whistling away with their ears plugged with mobile headphones grooving to music.

Right enough, there are even facts to prove it as the Cellular Operators Association of India estimate the mobile music industry to be worth around USD115 million and will zoom up to a whopping USD 170 million by the end of the year. This is also proved by the evident fall in the sales of physical forms of music like cassettes, CD's and the likes.

Facts prove the same as a survey by Synovate Music Matters revealed that nearly 49 percent of our music listeners play music on their MP3 players and an impressive 33 percent downloaded music on to their phones.

In fact phones do have a major role to play in this trend. Vigorous campaigning by mobile handset giants like Nokia and Sony Ericsson promoting digital music thanks to the players that are programmed in to their fancy handset models. Moreover many handsets today are also Bluetooth-enabled which helps in easy transference of songs and tones.

While this certainly does go to prove that our music audiences have become largely internet savy preferring digital formats for their music because of its clarity as well as ease in transference, this doesn't exactly mean good news for music companies. On the contrary music companies fear massive losses as more and more of their customers resort to free downloads available on the net instead of purchasing authentic music.

But these players would not sit back and let the doomsday reach them. Joining the internet band wagon, many players have created their own websites to scoop back what they can from Internet downloads. On charging a particular fee, users are offered vast download options of their favourite songs right from the site itself.

To name a few Planet M, Saregama Music and Yash Rai Films have been on the act. Others who have been in the arena like Sony BMG Music and Unilever Music India have since long made their music content available online on sites like iTunes, Napster.com and the likes.

Steve Guggenheimer, General Manager - Application Development and Platform Marketing, Microsoft Corporation says, “The availability of song video downloads from Yash Raj Films DRM platform marks a new era in Bollywood's use of technology to connect better with its audiences. We are very excited about this association, as it has not only given us an opportunity to work with one of India's most respected production houses, but also enabled us to improve the online experience for lovers of Indian movies.”

With the music companies doing their bit to hold on to their rightful sales, they are hopeful that music lovers would eventually become aware of the importance of purchasing music from authentic sources and joining hand in their war against piracy.

प्रशांत बन गए 'इंडियन आइडल' (From BBC Hindi Sewa) ------------------------------------- target=_blank>http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/entertainment/story/2007/09/070923_prashant_indianidol.shtml
-------------------------------------

Aren't we all of one another, Suna? Political geography and respective citizenships aside, I personally (truly) believe stronger Pan-Nepali Nationalism must always be kept of high regards so as to preserve and cherish our heritage, language, and culture.

That said, I also have equally high regards for other languages spoken within the political borders of Nepal.

To all the skeptics and to all who can't quite comprehend the hoopla over Prashant's victory....let me try to explain the predicament and the hysteria behind this episode.

Yes it is an Indian show. Yes it is not entirely academic in nature. But then again, success comes in various forms and does not necessarily have to be translated in terms of academia. And for those people who do not associate Nepalese living in other parts of the world besides Nepal, as true Nepalese… this may not be your cuppa tea. And finally I agree there are greater issues than a talent competition to contend with “BUT” this one is not your usual cat and mouse story.

Let me explain:

OK, let’s think in terms of a cricket match between Nepal and India. Say both teams reached the finals after competing with equally competent teams from various countries. Say Nepal won the match......how would you feel??? Jubilant, victorious, triumphant….the range of emotions would be quite incomprehensible I would imagine. Right?

Given, the long unspoken hostility between India and Nepal; given the fact that India bullies over Nepal, butts their nose into their internal affairs, interferes in the politics, manipulates their foreign affairs & policies........Given that scenario, that game or that victory would no longer be just a “Cricket Match”. Agree??
Indeed, that game would represent the core essence of the tensions, the bottled up sentiments and resentments of the entire nepali community. That victory would be a victory over the many challenges Nepal has endured and encountered along the way.

At the moment, such is the sentiment of Darjeelingeys/Nepalese across the globe. Prashant is a symbol of all the injustices we’ve faced as prabasi Nepalese. Prashant and even Amit Paul in a way became the voice for Northeast India. We “HAD” to show the rest of India that “WE” Nepalese have moved and advanced from the traditional stereotypes attached to us as a community. We are no longer their darwans and chowkidars. We have the caliber, the talent, the intelligence, the drive to succeed and we had to portray our unity by speaking in, “One” voice.

It may be (for some people) just a talent show but for Darjeelingeys….We who have undergone trials, discriminations and deprivations for decades……….this comes as a GRAND VICTORY for us. For in this victory lies a strong message to the rest of India that Nepalese are not their doormat. We are a force to be reckoned with. We will not be subdued, we will no longer submit to the atrocities and we “WILL” do everything in our power to fight out the injustices meted to us.

We have waited much too long for this day to dawn upon our horizon. So if you will…………..allow us to savor our moment of victory, will ya???

We have to accept the fact that Udit Narayan is the person who take Prashant up to gala round. Look at the video of Prashant Journey. Everytime is is Udit Narayan who says that you are in next round...
Good jod Udit Narayan Jee.. Thank you very much..

We need to respect Udit and Prashant equally. Udit helped to uplift Prashant's confidence. He was the 1st one to offer the music contract to Prashant live on the show. I thought that helped a lot to build confidence for Prashant. Then he got other offers in a row. Udit helped whatever he could for Prashant. They both are heros.

I agree MTA, has there not been Udit as one of the judge, Prashant would have faced more difficulties, probably elimination much earlier than the final gala round. Udit was the one who pointed out mistakes of Amit, and JA intervened him saying - dil badaa kijiye. When other judges were criticizing Prashant badly for his poor performance in early rounds of gala, Udit was encouraging him to show up to his expectation using diplomatic words. He told first time to Prashant - Aap sipoye he, aur sipoye antim tak fight karta hain, aap bhi kijiyega, good luck. That remark was very encouraging to Prashant to keep working hard and the same remark brought a branded fighter image for Prashant. Such sympathy of a judge definitely brings good relief for a contestant facing critics everywhere. Later on all other judges had to appreciate him as the unbeatable fighter and the dark horse of the race.
