You couldnt get a better report card from a more honest and sincere readr of yours John!!! A+ my dear mentor!!!!

I couldn't agree with you more. There have been new singers who have actually shined but whose musical creativity doesnt rhyme in tune with th listeners....meaning theyve been commercialized. I agee I listen to a lot of commercial stuff. I could never hear narayan gopal riyaaz.....but from what my dad told me....who actually went to college with udit narayan....(and boy did my dad bully him. He is on the list of one of the distinction students and top DADAs of oscal...)....he told me that even though udit never compared or even got close to his contemporary singers....his dedication was what made him stand out eventually....

and dedication is prevelant even in the most bitter songs a singer sings. I am guilty of actually supporting these everyday sukulgunda bands and singers but I guess ive been bought out....like the rest of us.

Now I fully understand the movie Matrix.

I wish I could write like John Galt does !

My view on contemporary Nepali music is probably more extreme than John's.

Some two years ago, I had expressed my frustrations with the following words.

"...I personally have not found a single song that penetrates my heart with its music and word- among the hits and releases of the past decade that I have access to. I am talking about a perfect song- a flawless piece without a single millisecond of boring moment, with words that penetrate you, elevate you to a higher plane. That kind of song...."

A Great Review on Nepali Music
November 30, 2004
- http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/openthreadall.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=18097

Though my thrust for quality, okay my taste of, music remains unquenched, I am at peace with the quantity coming out. I am sure everybody is aware of how competitive is time and they are doing the best they know. And as long as something like taxpayer's money doe not go to nurture untalented musicians or I am forced to buy albums that are not to my taste, I can complain only this much.

That said, the question that remains is- is there anything we can do- individually, collectively or whatever ways there are-, besides letting the market take care of everything, to make talents work harder to produce better music ?

One that comes to my mind after reading John's posting is the posting itself. I mean, this kind of critic must reach to all unaware aspirant and struggling musicians. More reviews and critic must help our music, shouldn't it ?

Regardless, another question is when can we expect to see the quantity catching up with the quality ? I share Loote's optimism. I think this kind of things happen is waves, rather than in a straight curve. And it is somehow related to our collective consciousness. In other words, I believe in musical revolution.

Since I think it is related to our collective consciousness, I also think musical revolutions might be linked to socio-political revolutions. And this makes me even more optimistic about next musical revolution in Nepal, re kya.

Okay, I stop my ramblings here.

Once again, a very nice read, John. Enjoyed immensely.

Meticulous!Throughly enjoyed it! People not listen only to Beethoven, they even listen to gregorian chants! :)

Yes, the younger generation has been shadowed by so called hip culture but I guess there are few who follow Bhakta Raj Acharya, Narayan Gopal, Tara Devi and few more.

Hope to hear from you soon Johnji. :)

A song is a song, even better if a listner can relate emotionally to the song, and then tahts what sticks to their mind and heart...so what does it really matter if is pop, hip hop or whatever.

Well put John Galt.
Everytime I hear a nepali rapper I cringe. I remember all the times I entered Korean Restaurants and laughed when I saw korean rappers, romantic singers belting out their songs a la boyz to men ishtyle. Little did I know we weren't very far behind!

If we have to be new and modern, give me kunti, manila, uday, suresh kumar (even they are like phikka chiya in comparison to the maitres)
Please classify me as being classical ANYTIME!!

Hyaa, my apologies if my reply was a little harsh, I was just trying to imitate your tone, and yes, the world does not have to agree, read it again, I never asked anyone to comply with me. It was my personal thought which would go unnoticed soon. But as far as quality music and the caliber of listener goes, stand in the same platform and question yourself after five years, if the answer is still the same, then I consider myself wrong.

Timetraveller,
Thanks for the full points, people here have swore to fail me. I have no problem to listening to those music, infact I accidentally do sometimes, but then the question arises as how can we justify the success of such music which has very little to do with quality.

My own dear bohemian erudite Nepe dai,
Gratified by your reply, I was actually looking for words to reply you all this time. Thanks for agreeing dai, it really means a lot when an aesthetic icon par excellence like you makes a remark. And no! You can never write like me because you always write BETTER.

I live eat and sleep music as long as it justifies its quality. Starting from Miles Davis and Phil Collins to Narayan Gopal, Arun Lama and Bhaktaraj Acharya to Mehdi Hassan, Talat Mehmood and Ghulam Ali, I claim I heard it all, but the present musical scenario derides it. It asks me to dance in the tunes of “china company” and a Girish Praneel song. No offenses, but they could have established themselves as a far better artist than they should have been. Like you said, I have not heard a single flawless Nepali song for almost a decade which actually soothes my soul.

I live on Ghalib’s and Bahadur Shah Jaffar’s poetries, and I often compare the present musical lyrics to the one set by those. I could endure even a small percent of Ghalib-alike lyric in them, but when there are none at all, I find it appalling.

A silent reader of your web based epic, and the song addressed to Sitara and many other sher – o - sayaris I hail you as a harbinger of a good Nepalese music.

Start a revolution, I would be the first one to join your team.

Flippy,
Thanks a lot, I am so glad that one of my dearest girls here agrees with me. I was listening to Fleetwood Mac and Cliff Richard in the local fm lately, it suddenly was followed by Snoop Dogg . Not that I hate snoop, but he broke my melodic sequence, I could never forgive that Radio host.

Mansion,
True, very true, but you missed the point, we are also talking about quality listeners here.

Suna,
Accept my warm greetings, although this is the first time we are writing each other, I feel we have been writing for ages. I like the way you aptly put your reply without digression. If you cringe, I cower.I the rappers actually intimidate me, with their flawless tunes but claptrap lyrics, they can entice wannabe homeys we find here at sajha - not me. Give me Narayan Gopal and Kunti and manila- uday and deep shrestha, I shall rest in peace.

but yeah cheers for sharing as always..and dyam!if only i was a bit jhyaap?or if only it was 2 yrs ago..someone asked me about me opinions on some types of music etc ;oP hehe..ppl might have got tired just seeing the length of the tirade i let out?wahahahaha yeah scary!;oP..but yeah seems like its peace i want..so to get peace?give peace?;oP hehe..tho that might not assure it?:oS..hehe..i mean..i think i found the type of music thats me?well we do change in time..but herum how that goes for me?:oS for us all? ;oP hehe dun mind me hoppin here and there..

Another amusing story that I missed! You have done an interesting job of expressing personal opinion through your characters. Keep up the good work and hope all is well.

Vantage Point - Who called you 'passe' about your musical tastes? Let me know, I'll fix him up ... LOL! Kidding hai :)

Anon,

I am pleased that my posts make your days sunny, and yes I do enjoy compliment who read and write with their hearts open as you do. I am a mediocre writer who has improved a little over the months here at sajha. But the best effort comes from people like you who invariably encourage me to write.

The poetries and ghazals that I mentioned earlier was not to display my music-listening acumen, but to make other people aware that quality music still exists. Thanks for sharing.

Hakuna Matata

Gazer,

Little do people agree with what I have put forth, but yes, when people like you concur. I am still savoring your "histoire d'amour captivante"

John,

I might write better, but I still wish I could write like you !

I not only enjoy reading what you write, but also have a very high regard for your love, pursuit and clamor for quality and class, be it in art or in politics. (I should add, that's how I have interpreted your rare political remarks regarding our political parties and even that apparently cold reception to "People's Movement" in early days.)

I think I share your antipathy to compromise in quality in arts and politics.

Keep up the good work, John. You are a darling writer to many Sajhaites including myself.

I sometimes feel that we are born in a wrong nick of time, in a wrong generation perhaps. Why almost all classes have really to be classic in time? I mean let's look at these persona. Most of them are from 60's, 70's and 80's in general...

Ghalib---Class Shayar from 60's (?)
Al pacino-- Class actor from 70's and 80's.
Robert Deniro--ditto
Amitabh Bachchan--ditto

B.P. Koirala--class politician from 70's.
Sir Winston Churchill--great politician and writer from 40's.
Mahatma Gandhi--great politician from 40's.

Narayan Gopal--Great singer from 70's and 80's
Kishore Kumar--ditto
Mohd Rafi--ditto
The Beatles--Great musical band from 60's, 70's and 80's
Pink Floyd--ditto
Eric Clapton--Great guitarist from 70's and 80's.

Sir Donald Bradman--Greatest cricketer ever (50's and 60's)
Pele--Great footballer (soccer player) from 50's and 60's.
Maradona--ditto (80's..)

Probably we are going through a trasition phase or something at present, that may be the reason why we have too fierce competition but still are craving for quality. May be we will witness another set of class persona after few years, who knows?

Good one, John!

Nepedai,

Thanks again for your response, although I still insist on my incapability to pursue quality writing the way you do. Yes, I was critical to some extent towards the people's movement in Nepal because they were following the similar trend they did sixteen years ago. There is never a time for instant action when rejuvenating politics and reconsidering mistakes comitted in the past, this is what makes me antipathize. Once again, thanks for your kind words, shall always cherish them.

Lonely,
I find your answer one of the most unbiased and researched than many others. Yes, we might be in transition and might realize the vitality of today's music decades later from now. But as of now, I cannot find any artist that could easily fit among those names.

Thapap,
I am glad you like what I wrote, your statement, however a little undeserved for a novice writer like me. I have light years to go before I actually step on the podium of quality writing. And yes, the recipe is simple, writing here requires a lot of imagination along with humor and preciseness.

Nas,
I am not surprised that you have the nerve to post that song here in my thread, I am also not surprised that your statement was grammatically incorrect, what surprises me is, you have invariably dared to reveal your worthless upbringing and constantly failed your parents amidst public eyes. I sympathize them. But on the other hand, I wonder if they actually had something to do to make this lecherous monster out of you.
Grow up, and see beyond hoops, hip-hop and hustle.

I didn't open it but thank you all the same. To each his own!
You like nepali rap, I don't. In my opinion, gaineys do a much better job than our present day rappers - Poonte anyday!! :)

John Galt: some bonds are such. :) my greetings too!

This M Factin like he is the Shakespeare up in here. This MF is in a serious ego trip. Comon Sajhahites, stop feeding this M F with an empty spoon. This is what happens if you do. LMAO

"what surprises me is, you have invariably dared to reveal your worthless upbringing and constantly failed your parents amidst public eyes. I sympathize them. But on the other hand, I wonder if they actually had something to do to make this lecherous monster out of you."

You sorry Arssse ignorant M F, seems like you is the one who had been molested by your parents while you were growing up or may be even now, who knows. I really think you have been abused as a child by your parents. So scared to do things that upset his parents !! Kid, you and your parents need some serious soul searching !

What you know about my upbringing M F ? I am proud of the fact that my parents has given me every freedom to choose my own actions and to bear its consequences and for that I have the highest respect for them.

Anyway, I did not intend to write all this, but since this M F is so concerned about me, I had to drop a lil something to this sorry arssse ignorant creature and what surprises me is that I did not even write a single sh*it to this creature. You started it, I finished it.

Suna, I am 100% with you on that point :)

I am all smiles Nas,

Your outburst explains how well you take arguments. Listening to that song in front of my two year old daughter left me no choice but to write to you. Like you said, sajha is for everyone - for kids too. Honestly, I would really like to thank you for the reply, I am at least grateful that you spend some of your valuable time thinking about me.

I however, found the adjectives a little hard to comprehend, perhaps I do not belong to the society where people have sexual intercourse with their mothers, seems like you do. Kindly invite me over, I have been thinking about writing a piece about incest for sometime, never knew my dream would come true so soon.

Also, I claim this is my thread because each and every person who visits here agrees and argues with a little benevolence and carmaraderie, we all show respect towards one another, even towards intruders too, as long as they do not barge in the way you did.

We have different styles of choosing our own freedom, and like Suna said, to each his own. So enjoy your freedom Mr. Gangsta and rap a concise reply - without swearing, if you can that is.

Oh and by the way, should have been "my parents have"....correct it if you may.

Suna,
I am sorry you were dragged into this crossfire, my sincere apologies.

Nas Bro,
"aba hera bazaar ma yo geet hit bho" hehe....

well, don't know what to say to whom...but can we get along? would be great... this reminds me of that movie "Kal aaj aur Kal" by Raj Kapoor. It's the LOVE and RESPECT for each other which can ONLY bind generations....hehe... differences are bound to happen.

sorry for the intrusion John Broda!! but this Loote is all about unwanted and mischievous intrusion hehe..

Have a nice day !

Loote
