Dear sons and daughters of Nepal,

We do not really know what the situation is like in our country. We have heard more rumours and less facts; and we have made our own judgement based on those rumours. Our opinions have been divided into almost two halves. One half supporting the King's move and the other half opposing the action. Almost all of us who are fortunate enough to live in the west at this torrid time are capable to think sensibly on this issue. So lets contemplate with the love for the country and citizens in mind now.

Some of us may have been victims of atrocities committed by the Maoists. Some may have suffered because of the corrupted political leaders. And some of us may have been the victim of injustice in the Panchayat era and at present. So we are expressing our vengeance against those who have made us to suffer. And therefore we are divided. The citizens who are educated, who have seen how democray functions, who know the fruits of social justice in a developed society; we are divided. And this is not a good sign for the future. Tommorow, we have to take the burden of Nepal in our shoulders. We have to hand the nation to our next generation. We have to make sure that we can hand over a peaceful and prosperous nation to our children and die. Otherwise we are not different to the previous generation which never got the oppurtunity like us to see the democracy and prosperity of the western world. Our children will blame us if we fail to do better things for our country. So let's try to be impartial, let's forget our personal interest, let's put away our vengeance against both sides of the debate. With a cool mind let's discuss what can we do at best to resolve the current crisis from our part. I will try to give my assement in the next thread on what can we expect in the near future and what is best for the country in the coming days. Please put your thoughts, unbiased and pragmatic, without spilling your anguish and hatred to all the sides- political parties, monarchy and maoists.I hope all of you will take part in this debate very seriously.
Newuser.

Hope all of you hate this.

We all are worried about where Nepal is heading, but we have to be cautious about how the media feeding us. Remember Zee TV trying to manipulate the situation in Nepal and showing clip of old video shots to present the situation of rioting which was not happening. Let?s not believe the outside media they never depict the true situation of people. Finally someone with courage has taken a responsibility to settle the matter, we need to support him. I am not a King supporter but I consider myself a nationalist and I believe he is the kind of person we need today. I have seen enough in Nepal and was partly a victim of these netas while working in government office purely as a technical person, they are never serious about the future of our country, all they cared was about their position in the party. They do not deserve to lead our country. Let?s give this king a chance, at least he has shown some courage, he is putting everything at stake, for what? isn?t this something? Let?s not get carried away by false media and off shoots of these netas. We need to support him, we might never get another chance. We gave opportunity to those netas our 15 yr?s of life so why are we so reluctant about giving 1/5-th of this time to King? Nepal is not yet ready for so called democracy, especially if it is triggered by neighboring bully.

Why so much criticism only to the king. It is not the king I believe King never thinks only personally. He thinks for All the people. It those people who handle the things. The Army are verry unprofessional. And if king can punish the person who does the mistake he will get the support from every where.

Dear Newuserr!
You are a good Story teller, love it and enjoying of reading it!

Yes! What you have said that could be true under certain circumstances, as you have mentioned this king came to power three years back, what about past thirteen years? The prime job of any government is to protect its citizens. To you or may be few who may think that it is shameful for the King to snap off all the civil liberties and rights of its citizens in order to handle this political crisis, but what is more shameful is, when any government?s ineptness became so acute that it became mere a spectator of continuous massacre of the innocent citizen where all the so called rights of the citizens kept intact in the stack of their official papers.

Back again. It's difficult to uncover a mind full of a certain belief and convince him to realize that his belief are really wrong. No comments to other friend's ideas, I respect your freedom of expression. You are entitlede to believe on what you believe.

Continuing to the past of King Gyanendra, let me come to the most important phase of his life. The aftermath of Royal Massacre and the 2 n a half years beyond.

'On that eventful day of the history of Nepal, Gyanendra was away to Pokhara via Bharatpur. Prince Deependra shot dead his father mother brother sister and other and finally hit himself in his head in the left and wiped out the blood of Birendra from the world. Drugged, drunken crazy Deependra killed everybody and himslef and spared Paras Komal Himani Prerana Rajiv Shahi and others after they begged for mercy'

well accounted investigation report by Taranath Ranabhat concluded.Bhata ta ta ta. We were not in a situation to say, no thats not the right explanation. what is right then? Could anybody ask this question in the expense of his life???I couldn't at least.

The people were set to snatch Deependra's dead body while taking him to Aryaghat but a curfew was masterminded to thwart any such attempt and the biggest secret of the hisotry of Nepal burnt down to ashes in the Bank of Bagmati in Aryaghat.
Gyanendra is crowned as the 13 th successor(am I right?or 12th) of the Shah dynasty by default.

on the day Rajshava cleared way to his accession, he told to his Praja that he would not keep quiet like his elder brother. How could he keep quiet when he had in his mind the plans of Feb 1 2005.

He rejected Girija's request to attack the Maoists in Holeri( not sure if this is the right place) and dismissed him after a few months. The army was persistent about imposing a state of emergency which Girija rejected and he was stripped off.
Then came Deuba. He did what the army asked him to do. Imposed emergency, brought poto(terrorism ordinance) and gave the army full authority to crush the Maoists. But the Maoists wouldn't be controlled. they attacked dang and salleri and achham and arghakhanchi and destroyed the army and armed police barracks one after the other.
King Gyanendra went on Nagarik Abhinandan and accepted garlands from mandales all over the country. Sacked Deuba alleging him of incompetence and elected Chand. Chand went and came Surya Bahadur. But who could dare to run election amidst maoists violence. Then the public protest gathered momentum against the King. Here he threw the cards by calling the politicians to come up with a consensus name for the post of the prime minister with a clean shit. Political leaders failed and he took advantage of the situation by reelecting Deuba. Poor deuba, just pawn of the Kings suicidal moves.

Deuba was destined to go and should have gone few weeks earlier but for the death of PV Narsinmha Rao and the canellation of the Royal trip to India.
Anyway Gyanendra deposed Deuba and realized his dream to rule the country with absolute authority. Meticulously planned but a very risky one but not a sleek plan in comparision to the Royal Massacre.

I have got more about his actions during the last 3 years but for the limit of space, to be continued!

Maybe you are right about your spicy story and we have heard several times through different media. I believe, this not the right time to point fingers based on hypothesis. We had enough of these Netas and the Maoist game. I am sure you are a Nepali and wishes for Nepalese living in peace and harmony. At least KG has given us some hope, he has put his crown his life and his generation at stake this time, did any of the party leader put anything at stake for country? Let?s just for this once think for Nepal being a Nepali and make your judgment being impartial. Let?s not be divided like our Neta?s, lets be united for Nepal.

To tell you something, at that night when that unpleasant thing happened I was working as a technical officer somewhere near Pokhara. I did witnessed KG trying to reach palace from Pokhara in stormy weather by helicopter. Weather condition was terrible in pokhara, and every one was confused and army battalion from Bairani barrack and Khani Khola were trying to make a helipad in several location to lift off KG, but the wind was strong and ground was all soft and muddy not suitable for helipad, and KG had to travel by road at that crucial hour. Nobody knew why he looked so distressed but just wanted to reach KTM.

Peace !!

Dear Newuser,

I really appreciate and praise for your analytical thoughts on the political developments in Nepal. You seem to be the one who knows what the norms and values of democracy are. I respect your expression that anybody has the right to express their view without making any derogatory remarks on others. I would like to add to your comments some of the very crucial turning point in our political system. This is my view and limits to me only. However, I will try to put my level best ability to put the analysis as impartial as possible.

Historically, from the day of foundation of Nepal, it has been observed time and again that politics in Nepal has always been influenced from external source. Whether it is during Shah regime or the era marked by Rana's till to this present date. However, I would like to point out to two historically significant events that occured before 2046. Remeber the Indo-Nepal treaty of 1951, which was undertaken by Nepal when it was internally divided and very weak. The agreement marks the kind of cunning behavior India has in its mind and in its heart rooted deep down. It is very clear that Nepal was rampantly looted under this agreement. Now, come to the event of 2033, when B.P.Koirala realizing this imperalist mindset of Indian leaders thought to give up the arm struggle and returned to Nepal with the message of "national unity". Out nation was once saved from the extending tenticles of the octopus called "India". Now, come back to the event of 2046, thanks to the great move by late king Birendra, who chose to support his own countrymen rather than being victim to the Indian demand to sign some hidden agendas in reciprocity of which was offered a commitment to paralyse and parish the democratic movement by Indian side. Thus, the whole point is India has tried to take benefit from us whenever we are internally disintegrated.

The connection of this motive of India to the present move by king has following dynamics. Remember, this Gyane has assumed the role of the only hindu king in the world. The ceremony was marked by presence of president of Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh - Mr.Ashok Singhal. Not to forget that Mr. Singal and his company advocates strongly the issue of "Hindutwa" in India and this "Hindutwa" issue is also the founding basis of BJP and the Sangha Pariwar in India. Thus, there is no doubt that until this king complies to the demand of these Hindutwa badi groups in India, he will never loose support from them. And it is to be taken very clearly that this king without the sense of support from India would never had thought of raising such a move at such a juncture. Now, the another dynamics here is that how come the BJP group, which is no more in power, influence any decision going against the king? This vital question has another implication. Every country in the present era looks for its "self-interest" first. India is no exception for this. They have always done and they will do when time and condition permits. Remember, if u have ever heard of India's mega mega mega project called "River Interlinking Project". This project is thought to cost India in IRS.560,000.00 crore that is five hundred sixty thousand crore. Just try to put the total digit in calculater, either it will show error or it will go to the exponential function. This "River Linking Project" is aimed at diverting the natural course of 36 different rivers flowing from the "Himalayan Region" to the different part of India. India will benefit from this in terms of irrigating barren land in all its central and south western zone plus a huge supply of electric power is also targeted. This is India's mega target and it requires consent from Nepal to "divert" some big rivers flowing all the way from Nepal thru India down on to Bay of Bengal. Since the diversion of these perennial river will bring huge catastrophy in terai region of Nepal, India without consent from Nepal can not move ahead. For this, they require consent and agreement with Nepal. By the way, Nepal is not the only country to be affected if this project is implemented. Several other countires will also be badly affected, one of which is Bangladesh and it has already reacted very angrily against India's decision to move ahead. Well, I need to do more research to find more on this.
Anyway, the whole point is India might be targeting some very difficult situation in Nepal so that they can plot and fix this agreement. Now, this king in order to get some support from India against this sucidal move might struck this deal with India, which will perhaps , god protects-not, wipe out terai region from the map of Nepal. For the reasons above, I am very wary listening to the comments from Indian side against the move of King and feel like it is kind of deception.

This external dynamism in politics of Nepal has always been very costly for us. However, I agree that any nation at this point of time if supports the democratic movement in Nepal should be looked on for some type of pressure on this king.

I look forward to your comment on this view.

wow anjanp:

first off. thank you very much for this point of view. in the midst of all this mad-scrambling, this dimension of the picture has been totally absent (someone correct me if i am wrong).

your analysis certainly adds food for thought. but i have to admit, this is an angle i had failed to look at in the past. i will write more once i think a little more on this.

thank you again. with people like you, nepal's future as a democratic country is never bleak. bravo!

thank u Ajanp, I also share ur analyzation. India has always played a role of obvert or covert of all the past democratic movement in Nepal. In return, she wants her interest be fullfill by Nepal. It has exloited Nepal whenever and wherever possible.Bilateral river project treaties are the example of this.India knows Nepali authority cannot resist whenever they extract maximum advantage from nepal. The reason is they know the nepali (specially of GPK MAKUNE like Netas) sochai that they should be grateful to India for the goodit has done for Nepal or more like to individuals. Thus we make that gratitude our liability where as one should make thinking that as a nation or human being we don't have to feel any kinda gratitude to a benifector in certain situations. Even the law of Nature have set a limits for one to show a gratitude towards the benefactor.

"River Interlinking Project" its the grand design of India to exploit nepal as much it can. Koshi high-dam project is one of them.
I am 100% behind ur saying that eventhough we give chance to king but there should be monitoring of his acts and keep him on pressure. Thus we can start the process of democrary once again.

nicely viewed account about India's dubious role in influencing Nepali politics by anjanP. I love to read these kind of logical arguements in the thread.
Other guys are also invited.

( some days ago few 'esteemed' sajhaittes explicitly supported the gay activities in Nepal as the excercise of fundamental rights by group of individuals having a different sexual habit; and denounced the government move to shut down Tibetan refugee office in Kathmandu as serious violation of human rights conventions: now everybody seem to realize that it was an attempt to generate support from the Chinese government on the recent draconian political changes. Today, King Gyanendra has pulled down the curtains on the very fundamental civil liberties in our country and all those messiahs of human rights and freedom have hibernated, probably they have changed their nicknames and are in a full swing to support Gyanendra's move. This silence of those gay rights promoters reveals the fact that they are extreme oppurtunists who want to take advantage of the changed situation in Nepal. Anyway, I don't expect them to show their gut against Gyanendra's evil actions)

Now back to our discussion. I still have more things about Gyanendra. But lets start with the role of India as a continuation to anajnP's analysis.

Nepal has a very important socio political and economic relation with India mainly because of the geographical location of the country and due to some close bond between the people(specially madhesi community) living across the borders which runs back to history. Ram Sita Budhha Ashoka and stuffs. Because a long mountain range stands between China and Nepal, India is easily accessible to Nepali public. Even the rivers flow down to south from Nepal asking both country to have a good relationship. But the relationship has not been cordial since hundreds of years ago. Neither it has been balanced nor fruitful in the Nepali perspectives. Why not we focus on the ties between the two neighnours in the modern era?

India had always been the biggest influence in our modern history but after India got independence from the British in 1947, each and every political events in Nepal are directly and indirectly influenced by the events and activities evolved in India. Indian independence paved the way for the overthrow of Rana regime in Nepal. Before that, Ranas pleased the British rulers of India; after that the palace and the politicians have been pleasing Indian rulers to fulfill their political ambitions. This is the biggest tragedy which accumulates to the overall failure of Nepal to achieve stability and developement.

A different dimension to the relationship to India would have shown Nepal a vistas of oppurtunities, especially in the pretext of the rapid economic development of the northern neighbour China and India's remarkable effort to catch up other developed nations. Nepal could have been a trade link between two rapidly growing economies of the world. But the immense faith and dependence on New Delhi by Kings and politicians of Nepal from decades have not only jeopardised those chances of economic advantages, but also made our politics very dirty and oppurtunistic. Here, none of the groups- the King or the political parties or even the maoists could be less blamed. The group which can outclass another to show devotion and yessman attitude to India stays in the helm of power.
Things and scenarios have changed a little bit in the recent years, but still India is the most influential player on the political affairs of Nepal. King Gyanendra could not have ventured to rule autocratically without the support of India. With this move of the King, India's influence on Nepal will further grow up. As the leaders flee to India for political refuge, Gyanendra must agree to Indian bargainings just to continue his authority. Otherwise India will soon use the dissident political leaders to rise against the King which will once again be counter-productive for the long term democratic stability of Nepal. The king will be in a double dillemma, because India have already thrown its aces by criticizing the Kings move as a serious setback to democracy. This adds pressure to the monarchy amidst the outcry of Indian media and intellectuals, which have urged their government to intervene directly to the king already. India is a surging economy and has very litttle diplomatic interest on Nepal. But it's interest on the water resources is vast and unfathomable. Hence, India in order to serve it's own interest puts the King and the political leaders in two sides of the balance time and again. This time the weight in the side of the king looks greater to serve India's interest and hence it is giving an indirect support to the King from the oblivion. But India is known to be the biggest democracy in the world and it's support to a tyrannical move in Nepal may run dry very soon. Its attitude towards Nepal in every terms depends on the polarization of Indian politics. And this polarization appears to be greater to the quest of democracy. So Gyanendra, unless acting as a yesman ruler to Indian rulers, cannot be assured to extract internal support for long. Even for few more months. To be contd.....

Why could have India supported the King?

Althought his moves breach India's stance on democracy, Gyanendra's successful persuasion to India to accept his autocracy in Nepal may have been yeilded for a number of reasons. In politics the share of interests makes the crucial developments(ghatanakram). And here Gyanendra and India have some common interests for which an unpredictable and unviable bondage came into force.

First and foremost cause must have been the growing stature of the maoists rebels. As many pundits opine, India had two alternatives to choose from. The Maoists or the King. India could have never choosen a bitter enemy then the maoists to run its northern neigbour. Indian Maoists rebels have given a severe headache to India itself, so it doesn't want to see Maoists building up rapidly to a bigger proposition in Nepal. Some years back, Maoists may have served Indian interests . BUt no more now. In recent months Maoists have been openly criticising and challenging India. The relation between the rebels operating in eastern and northern India and the Nepalese maoists was increasingly threatening as well. Not in the scale of defeating Indian military but big enough to cause considerable security worries.
Besides, the global war on terrorism and the US involvement in Nepal to help the government to quell the rebellion must have raised some alarms in India. How can a regional power tolerate to seeing a far off superpower playing bigger roles on the politics of it's neighbour? That was not the only case. America must have urged India to cooperate with the Nepalis government to defeat Maoists. Indian waited and waited for long, gave military and logistic supports to Nepal, but the security forces could hardly control the Maoists expansion. Hence when Gyanendra asked for a chance for himself, it couldn't say no.If Gyanendra could crush the rebels, that will only help to India's causes. Because if Gyanendra fails, either India has to accept maoists rule in the country or intervene militarily. Why would it choose for the alternatives that ask for it's direct military involvement. Moreover any military intervention by India would never be a welcome move in Nepal. So the Indians agreed to give Gyanendra a chance even it was against their belief that Multiparty democracy and constituional monarchy are the two pillars of Nepal's stability and development.

But maoists alone were not the cause of concern for the Indians. They have also seen enough of our political leaders. Our leaders have never been consistent while approaching to the INDIANS. They just fly to Delhi to get blessings for the formation of a new government. They speak one thing with the Indians and give a different version back in Nepal. In the last 16 years, none of our leaders have given India the assurance that they could be entrusted to safeguard Indian interest totally(which is at least something good for Nepal). So India do not see much difference between the King and the political leaders. India may have given the benefit of doubt this time to the king in the wake that Nepalis leaders were not consistently faithful to them in the last 16 years.
Gyanendra himself has a very good family ties with the Indian political elites by virtue of the Indian roots of Himani. So he could not be a step brother to India in expense of Girija. Not much difference can Gyanendra and Girirja make in the Indian perspective.

Politics apart, the biggest interest of all lies on the water resources of Nepal. Water for irrigation in the vast agro fields of Bihar and Uttar pradesh and electricity for the same states are two of the most important factors that pulls India's attention to Nepal. The Indians have very badly exploited the ineptness of our leaders while compelling them to agree treaties on water share in the past. They have dumped and duped every rulers in the last 50 years and cleverly used our resources for their benefit. They have already diverted a big portion of our water and electricity as their own property but they are eyeing for more rewards. Naymore, They have the responsibility to protect their citizens from enudation resulted by the flooding of rivers in monsoon. The best thing is to divert the course of the river lowering the risk of flood in India in the expense of Nepal. They have many mega and mini projects in their drawing board which they intend to work out in coming years. They cannot complete those projects without the acceptance of Nepal just to meet the international law which they should abide by while sharing water resources flowing from a border country. Political bickering and instability in Nepal is the best tool for them to take advantage. They support the rulers who agree on their conditions. Hence we cannot rule out the possibilty that Gyanendra has to agree on their upcoming proposals on water share. If he doesn't, he will have to go.

Bilateral trade with Nepal is not very important for the Indians, but still they want monopoly in this regard too. We must realise that our ministry of supply has indeed kept the interests of Nepal entact during the last few years. They have said no to many of India's unfair conditions on the hassle free export of Nepalese products in India. They made a big heck on the trade of vegetable ghee for more then 4 years and cut off agreed quotas on many Nepalese products. They have always put obstacle in balanced trade for which Nepal has lost it grounds on textile industry. Trade deficit is huge. Smuggling of cheap oil from Nepal is however encouraged by state governments. Irrelevant trade agreement might be made in the years of Gyanendra's autocractic regime. An area to be watched closely.

However, For all these reasons, there is no point to hate India and Indians. They have better governance, better diplomacy and they are doing good for their interests. Its our rulers who have succumbed meekly and cheaply to the Indians to protect their stay in power. We may have to loose some of our resources to India while Gyanendra fulfills his ambition to carry on his despotic rules in the coming years.

To be continued... Guys post your comments pls.

I don't hate Indians.
However, I dont like Indians for these reasons:
provoking propogandas that the birth place of Gautam Budhha is in India.
writing in their textbook that Mount Everest is in India.
Not pressurizing Bhutan to repatriate it's refugees.
Rooting out border pillars and moving them further north.
Sending army and police to Nepal to provoke outrage in the border.
Enundating Nepal by controlling the flow of rivers in monsoon.
Some ultra nationalist hindu leaders commenting that Nepal should be annexed by India.
Comments by Indian(from actors/actresses to western immigrants) implying Nepal as part of India.
Exploiting Nepalese workers in their businesses(restaurents in the west).
Saying Bahadurs to Nepalese.

You know why they are doing this? Because, our rulers bow down at their's. Because we are inept and incompetent to them. Because we have divided national consensus to them. And finally we don't have a mature democracy like theirs. Now we have fallen 58 years behind India. India got democracy in 1947 with independence, we have gone further behind with the despotic move of King Gyanendra
