A Nepali woman went to Pashupatinath with her 7 year old boy.
Boy: Look mom a cow, can we get some milk?
Mom: No son we can not, it's just a statue and they continued.
Boy again said: Look mom the tiger, will it attack us?
Mom: No beta its just a statue. It won't.
Boy: Look mom a dragon, will it spit fire on us?
Mom: It won't dear...its just a statue. Then they both enter into the templ...e premises.
Mom: Look son God, He is the master of the universe and will guide you. Please bow down in front of him and show some respect.
Son: Sorry mama, He can't be God. Its just a statue. If He is the master of the universe than just tell him to talk to me.
Mom was baffled.
Just to let you know, Vedas, Bhagwad Gita , Bible, Quran and most of other sacred scriptures prohibits Idol worship. Please read your scripture today. Please do not put God in a box.

The Vedas: "Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste"
"They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements" (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). "They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti." [Yajurveda 40:9]
Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.

Bhagvad Gita: "Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures." [Bhagavad Gita 7:20]

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
"Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God." [The Bible, Exodus 20:3-5]

Al-Qur'an: "It has been revealed to you, and to those before you that if you ever commit idol worship, all your works will be nullified, and you will be with the losers." [Al-Qur'an 39:65]
"God does not forgive idolatry,* but He forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who sets up idols beside God, has forged a horrendous offense." [Al-Qur'an 4:48]

Have a good Tuesday. Please do not give up your right to think to anyone. Let not your fore-fathers make decision of your salvation.
May God guide all of us. Ameen !!!

your Nepali brother

If religion is in conflict with science, I will put that religion in garbage! It seems like we are trapped in the myriad of language. Let's first try to understand the root meaning of the word "religion" itself. Religion means your dharma. Dharma basically means your duty/obligations/actions etc. How well you perform your duty or kartavya depend on the level of your awareness of this existence. When you know space supports everybody's growth by letting all things expand and move, you will have some awareness of space in a more deeper level. When you know you cannot dry, soak, cut, divide space, you will have understanding of space in subtle level. Similarly, human behavior is that field where one requires higher awareness in order to behave properly. How many of you read true authentic Vedic literature? The Nasadiya Sukta of Rig Veda clearly explains the creation of this Universe from a bindu. This Nasadiya Sukta in modern science is Big Bang. In the theory of Big Bang, this universe evolved from a minute point. Vedas talk the same thing but they say it 'bindu.' Language is different, but both talk about the same reality. Rig Veda also talks about evolution of human beings which do not conflict with the idea of Darwin's theory. So, please read authentic Vedic literature. If somebody misinterprets Vedas and use it to control people, who is responsible for this? People(ignorance) or religion?

This thread is going in thousands of directions.

As always, religious posters are posting new argument, not addressing the rebuttal presented against their previous arguments. When we keep reciting doctrines and posting youtube videos and copy paste article that did nothing to add to the discussion, how can we discuss anything. I have no problem if a religious posters come ahead and says religion defies logic, not everything can be evaluated with our conscious or our cognitive abilities. If you try to logic and debate for religion, know that it is a weak proposal.

"We have not seen Alexander (the king) but we still believe he existed, don't we? We have not seen air, but we still believe it exists. Correct me from wrong :)"

The first one is a valid question. While I could refer you to multitudes of Greek, Egyptian and even Indian historical accounting of Alexander the Great, along with artifacts and monuments discovered, I still cannot say for sure that he existed. This is true for any historical figure, be it Gengis Khan or Prithvi Narayan Shah. I will never be able to prove beyond the shadow of doubt that they existed. With that uncertainty, would it be right for me to tell you that you HAVE TO do a certain thing because Alexander said so or Prithvi Narayan did so? Has anybody imposed a law based upon the writings of Gengis Khan, blindly trusting his past existence?

I hope you see my point.

Now, let's get to air. Nobody has seen it and yet we know it exists. Visuals are not the only way to confirm existence. Let me prove it to you, you inhale and exhale air to survive hence air has to exist. Don't believe me? Try holding your breath.
Ok, let's get a little more scientific. Take a handpump, notice what's inside it. Nothing but air. Now take a deflated balloon. Try pumping the handpump once connected to the balloon, does the balloon start getting bigger? We just proved the volume property of air. We know the chemical composition of air that we breathe (over 70% Nitrogen, some part oxygen and the rest), you can test this composition in various reactions in a lab. Have you heard of pneumatic machines? They work in the principal of air pressure. Pretty much every physical property of a matter can be demonstrated in air and its composition.

Science is not perfect, it keeps making errors and revises its theories. But for anybody to accept the scientific principle, one has to demonstrate it with empirical method. Religion has to be accepted as is. This is fine as long as it doesn't determine every aspect of my life. I am not anti-religion, I am just anti-nonsense.

Religion is like apples, awareness of existence is like oranges.
If someone had not taught you about god would you be the same person you are today ? I think not.
And to protect this belief(of god) and invention they created different philosophies called religion. To further assert its authority they created religious institutions. Through these institutions they created rituals, prayers, monuments, temples, churches to keep the general public in check. To have total control they devised ways to generate revenue, that is why regardless of what religious real-state you go to-->  be it temple, a church, a mosque you are required to pay. Vatican is one of the richest corporations in the world. You really think god gave you the chaal chalan ritiriwaz ? it is all man made....he he

Religion not only teaches us to be moral and be good to fellow human being. It also teaches us to worship our CREATOR. Did someone created us or we created ourselves?
We can not create a fly, how can a non-living thing create a living creations like us. Let's use our logic. There has to be a CREATOR.

Google did not exist out of no where, great discoveries in world do not occur by co-incidence. I pray GOD gives us right understanding.

I know a little knowledge of science makes man an atheist but a deep knowledge makes man a believer in GOD. Read Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagvad Gita, Bible, Quran all points to One GOD.

GOD is one, please read any scripture today without preconceived notions.

Paul Smith

" Did someone created us or we created ourselves?"

Did someone create the creator or did he create himself?

@rethink
No point debating this. All they do is post whatever comes to there mind or whatever they are preached. If you refute one point, they don't respond, they simply post another point. Very much how religion works, I guess.

अपौरूशेय : This word means "un-created." Like the whole tree lies in the seed in potential form; Vedas lies in the infinite consciousness all the time. Infinite consciousness is eternal. It is uncreated (Apaurusheya). How can somebody create the omnipotent reality? Creation appears only in the state of ignorance. The dynamic creative potential of infinite consciousness is called creation but in reality there is no creation. This world-appearance is just like a mirage.

So what you believe to be the ultimate truth could be just a mirage in your head.

@rethink, in Vedic literature there are records of direct experience of ultimate reality by Rishis who went beyond thoughts and mind. That which created human mind must be beyond mind (In fact, mind is another name for ego-sense). Therefore, using any language to describe the ultimate reality is a mere childish act. Those who know Brahman can't describe Brahman and those who talk about Brahman know nothing about Brahman. There are Akashik records obtainable through the faculty of Clairvoyance (third eye). This things are beyond quantum physics and I don't think I should explain all these here on sajha because it is out of scope for this discussion. Physics has limitation. Where quantum physics ends, Vedas starts!

"..in Vedic literature there are records of direct experience of ultimate reality by Rishis who went beyond thoughts and mind."

ujl, you are repeating basically this same argument over and over again in different threads. But you have never been able to explain what it is and how there is one unique 'ultimate reality' or consciousness (the word from your other threads) that any other 'enlightened' ones will experience. Is there a one unique destination..have you  been there? Or do you know someone who has?*** You refer to books that were written a long ago, you quote rishis where none live around us.

And in failure to explain, you put these kinds of elusive statements:

"Therefore, using any language to describe the ultimate reality is a mere childish act."

I admit, we are dumb (or have not drank enough cool-aid)...let's do this childish act. \

Ujl

I understand you have a lot of belief in those books and I don't blame you. But basing all your faith and creation of world order in a book could be simply stated wrong and a big mistake.

Let me give you an example. Let's say this current civilization ends and after thousands of years another civilization comes into existence and they find few books from our civilization to base their beliefs like you are basing your beliefs on the writings in the Vedic literature.

Just imagine the book they find about is "SUPERMAN". Like you they will believe that there used to be a being that could fly, shoot out laser radiation with eyes, see through objects. They will believe and argue with each other about the existence of a super being all because of a book they found.

Could the vedas be a science fiction novel from the past civilization?

Well my dear brothers and sisters:

Let me ask my so called atheist friends: "Have you read any scripture cover to cover?"

Vedas talk about oneness of GOD, Bible talks about oneness of GOD, Qur'an talks about oneness of GOD. Although it was revealed in different times, different places but the message is same. There has to be truth correct?

Also, it's a matter of salvation please do not take this matter easily.
Why would you humilate yourself and say your ancestors were monkeys :)
Also why should we think ourselves as an accident?

I am student of science and i know Big bang has been mentioned in the Vedas and also in the Qur'an: http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/1560/

May the guidance be with me, you and all of us.

Uji,"in Vedic literature there are records of direct experience of ultimate reality by Rishis who went beyond thoughts and mind."  One word Literature is what you are basing your facts ?  Just like those Bible Thumpers in the beltway. There are records that in bible Jesus made wine out of water too. Quack Quack !!

Paul/Ujl (are you guys one person?), it is admirable that you have read the vedic texts and other religious scriptures. Bestow what you have read to us without making any judgement on our belief or anybody elses. That'd be very much appreciated. I am always interested in knowing what Vedas had to say and how it parallels the contemporary views. Why don't we start a new thread for that enlightenment, interpretation and judgement should be left to the individuals.

Rethink, I actually had similar views. Maybe Ramayanas and Mahabharatas were the epic drama written by our Shakespeare of yesteryears. But since there are some proofs (I can't say much on this topic) of their happenning, my view point is that these books are glorification and exaggeration of what happened. Maybe an ape or a monkey did help king Rama in some limited aspects it was glorified by the writers and so on. Just a thought.

I will like to clarify I cannot deny existence of a God, nor can I say for sure God exists. Agnostic me.

Just to clarify my stance as well. I don't think there is something called an absolute atheist, because if there is an absolute proof of god that is discovered or witnessed or imminent, then there would be no such thing as an atheist.

Same thing with aliens. There are people who believe in them, there are those who are not sure and there are those who do not believe at all. But let's say one of these days, aliens do come down from the skies and make their presence known then there is no doubt about their existence. It becomes part of the reality and part of the truth that we know for sure.

Therefore, there is no such thing as an absolute atheist. An atheist may be unsure about God's existence to a higher degree than an agnostic, but he cannot be an absolute atheist due to the possibility of the existence.

While the proof of existence can be shown in an absolute reproducible way, there is no way to prove inexistence, so the yay sayers seems to hold the default advantage.

That is why the believers hold their belief as more absolute than the non believers because you cannot prove something does not exist in the vastness of the universe because there is too much unchartered territory.

This is comparable to the age old saying "looking for a needle in the haystack". The believers believe that the needle exists but they cannot find it. The non believers believe the needle does not exist. The believers come up with stories like their great grandfather dropped the needle in the haystack according to a book they found in the attic. The non believers don't believe it till the needle is found.

I think the non believers are more practical in their beliefs than the believers. By non believers, i mean the agnostic. I think all atheists and agnostics are waiting for some kind of proof that shows that the believers are right, while the believers are happy to put together stories of greatness and supernatural together to find a glorious meaning to their otherwise mundane life

Let's hear from your side too (idk2013, rethink, bathroomcoffee, kiddo). Here are some questions I would like to ask you guys. My first question is : Why do something exist at all? My second question is : What was there before Big Bang? My third question is: Why is evolution happening in this Planet (Earth)? My fourth question is : Are we real? If yes, how? If not, how?

You were asked to respond to some very basic questions. Are you avoiding that again?

I guess this is how your world works. If not, answer the above questions please.
