A Nepali student, Dr. Pukar Malla, has been elected as the President of
the Harvard Graduate Council for the academic year 2010/11.

Malla
is a Masters in Public Administration candidate at the Harvard Kennedy
School of Government. This is the first time that a Nepali national has
been elected to such an esteemed position at Harvard.

The
graduate council is a representative student government of the twelve
graduate and professional schools at Harvard and serves the interests of
the 13,600 graduate students at Harvard. The council advocates student
issues to the central administration, fosters cross-university
collaboration and nurtures social ambience among the graduate students,
according to fellow Harvard student Bisundev Mahato.

Malla's team
recently organised the inaugural Harvard Leadership Conference, where
300 students and 41 speakers participated. Former Prime Minister of
Haiti, Michele Pierre-Louis, Rear Admiral Susan Blumenthal and US
Congressman Ed Markey were the keynote speakers. This year, the council
also aims to officialise university-wide student groups.

Malla
finished his high schooling in Nepal from St. Xavier's and
Budhanilkantha schools. In the US, he has been educated at acclaimed
institutions including Swarthmore, Cornell and Harvard. He has been an
active member of the Nepali community in the US. He is the Co-Founder
and Secretary General of the global Nepali youth movement, Nepal Ko
Yuwa. He is an International Coordination Council member of the NRN
Association and a Co-Founder of the Computer-Association of Nepal - USA.

Congrats Pukar

He is an inspiration all the young nepali generation. Not only is he successful but he is a great guy as well, very nice and humble. I'm happy for him ;-)

While Pukar's resume is outstanding and once you have Ivy League's connection, definitely you will be amongst handful of elites and would no wonder land in a big position.This is also a fact. His grooming. upbringing, his perseverance, intelligence, exposure and perhaps luck which has landed him in this sort of impressive position.

At the same time just because you have PhD from big school does not make you a good social leader.  Taking inspiration from the successful people like him is one thing, but being overwhelmed or being over critical unnecessarily  hinders your growth of self confidence and as well as keeps you away from  recognizing those people who are back home doing some great jobs. Starting facebook page is I guess an example of sheer lack of our critical thinking. Just too early.  Who should be our prez or pm,  let the people back home to decide! Or do we even know whether pukar wants it or not? Let's not put him on a awkward position as well. Academically, yes he can contribute a lot to his home country.

Having spent so many years in US, it would  be quite normal for him to take US passport, nothing wrong on his part  but folks here will be disappointed, some people who think is an ideal, wants him to be PM or Prez would be outraged. No? That is how most of us are.I see sort of fighting started here already, worth it? Think people!! Couple of years ago, we heard that one of Nepali  got into NASA, he
was I guess was from  graduate from third tier Midwestern university. So, if you are talented, hardworking individual you are going to do good! While we should be happy with our fellow nepali's achievement in international arena, at the same time we need to think that people back home are more than or as capable-except our political leaders.

He has achieved a lot, and  would go long way,  I do not think it is a right idea  for us to drag his credentials into some sort of controversy or be over euphemistic either. Let him live his life, let him enjoy his achievements, popularity, celebrity status. In future definitely, we will be in a better able to draw some conclusion.

I am thrilled how the Asian community still perceives the events surrounding them.  While scholastic achievement is itself a matter to take pride upon, it does not give anyone a blanket certification.  Almost all the US politics and financial industry is led by Ivy grads; however, Americans do not perceive an Ivy degree for "everything" that matters in a society.  I know Nepali guys in mid 20s as Investment Bankers (Principals) and CEOs/Entrepreneurs who are not even from Ivy Leagues.  Obviously, they don't want to be in the news.

One interesting observation that comes is how much Nepalese are obsessed with degree and institution.  Baburam was board topper; he got blanket certification to commit crime in Nepal.  When will Nepali grow up?  While Enron executives were from Harvard, they were known criminals too.  Are Nepalese brainwashed?  The dedication to serve a country, humanity and to become a human comes from within, not from an institution.  There are so many board toppers that you meet here.  I firmly believe that ANY Nepali student who came here on a student visa with 70%+ in SLC/+2, is fully competent to get into any Ivy League institution.  He may not have been well guided.

A real unfortunate scenario for a lot of bright students when they immigrate to this country is the lack of guidance.  I've met many bright students who scored 75%+ in their SLC/+2, but they ended up in community colleges (many from St. Xaviers and BNKS).  It's not true that they don't retain the potential to get into Harvard, they do; it's just the tragic part of life.  I am sure, given the scenario, if they all have to openly compete, you will find many community colleges students getting into Harvard.

It was all good until I saw the modeling, acting part. Dude, come on. Beauty and Brain DO NOT go together, it's the nature of the law. Jack of all trade, master of none, the phrase is there for a purpose. What next, stand up comedy?
I'm pretty sure there are lots of other over achiever from Nepal who do not post resume on sajha unlike you.
I've probably contributed more than this guy for Nepal (not trying to brag), but yet I'm nobody and he's a hero. What does that say? Just do your own thing and do not make a big deal out of nothing. This simply shows how desperate are we for a hero, a messiah, a savior. We Nepali need an honest leader, not over educated Ivy guys. It never ends. Sometime it is Manisha Koirala, Prasant Tamang, Mahabir Pun and now it's this guy.

I would not surprise with the advertisement Nepalese do for their success since we are grown up in a culture where Grades (scores) are posted openly and they become the matter of pride or humiliation (not only among students but also among parents/teachers). The  same is true with Chinese and Indians. If I have a indian class mate, after professos gives back the exam he immidiately ask me " tume Kitna Mila'. If I say I got 50, he immidiately adds that he got 60. Thats the culture we have.

I attended three universities (two for graduate studies and one for further position) in USA, I found that there is much less room for a student to make an atvertisement that he knows more than his class mates. Furthermore, a fourth year student takes  class with a first year student for fulfilling the requirements here. There is not much superiority inferiority feeling in a class of US university. (I was teaching in college in Nepal in some point of my life and there is a huge ego problem in  high scorer and feeling of inferiority in low scorer, that continues in their life of being a superiror or inferior- which is not good for a society).The same thing is being reflected here in Sajha. I agree in most part with you Nagarik.

Although, I did not go to "Ivyleague" I frequently had chance to work with ivy league graduates. One of my professor was Harvard Graduate, my own advisor was from a very high level university in canda, and my present advisor Graduated from Cornell.  My class mates/ colleagues were and are from so called very good universities of china and India. When we are here, every body is in same pace, we keep working in lab collecting data writing report and giving presentation. Nobody is good or nobody is bad.Nobody is superior or inferior. Some time some guys become lucky, gets good data and happen to publish in good journal.

Guys, we should keep going.

 

He can buy nepalese with his Harvard degree. People will blindly follow him with "Jai Jai Kaar". Individual achievement and intelligence has nothing to do with where you origin from. And this advertisement in sajha or mass media is better way to make people blindly follow him which some are already ready to make him prime minister ( childish ). Sure, Germans are proud of Einstein but he has long way to go. If he wants popularity, then he can advertise himself.

All are born equal and have and should be given equal opp, and this is the country if had talent will rise from janitor to ceo. I have frens who go to Ivy league. I can understand their mind, they must be seeing they r the one, u r just bs who works in graveyard in gasstaion, 80hrs week, ghanta hanni in their language.

But we dont have any personal envy on Dr. malla. If he can get good grades, get elected , its good for him. Someone has said earlier you shud see success in others success. Its not like you cannot study science or get good grades and you are inferior , but also if someone gets good grades than you, it shudnt be a prob for you either.

We should always encourage who wants to do something good , atleast he is not ruining our country like politician but encouraging each n every parents that nepali , their son can be part of harvard society or may even lead it.

I think everyone was joyed when Black, obama became president.

. Again I will congratulate all harvard students who got admission to that university including him and   nepalis in other universities. Congratulation to people who got visa in american embassies and to kids who passed SLC.

He is just a simple guy, he is a true nepali, american and may be wants to become global citizen. Let him be global citizen , global president, wish him success. If he wants to become famous, lets cheer him up by making him famous. If he is happy , we will be happy.He is not just becoming YANA GUPTA showing her private parts for cheap publicity and ruining the minds of small children for publicity.

Reading above discussion, it hit my memory, Einstein was offered PM post in israel coz of his talent but he kindly declined saying wht he has may not be fit for running the country.
