If you want to know beforehand the result of 'Indian Idol', Sony television's popular contest to discover a new pop star, watch the television channels in Nepal.
The show, popular in Nepal since its inception, has now become a national obsession, thanks to a participant of Nepali origin remaining in the ring, for the first time in Idol's history.
Prashant Tamang, a young cop in Kolkata, first made his way to the top 10 and on Saturday finally to the top three finalists amid nail-biting suspense and frantic voting from fans, for whom he is the new icon of the Nepali-speaking diaspora.
With the grand finale just two weeks away now, Nepal's dailies, magazines and TV stations have been following the remarkable progress of the boy from Darjeeling, who had no formal training in music and was forced to become the breadwinner of his family in his teens, following his father's early death.
So great is Nepal's preoccupation with the new star that now Kantipur, Nepal's biggest private media house that is known for its exposes, has turned its attention to coming up with 'Indian Idol' scoops.
On Saturday, when Kantipur Television broadcast its evening news bulletin, more than one hour before the 'Indian Idol' show was to be screened, the news caster announced that Prashant had made it to the top three singers. The bulletin was complete with the information that the lone girl among the top quartet, Ankita Mishra, was to exit the contest.
In the past, its sister publication, the Kathmandu Post, had predicted that two more girls, Puja and Dipali, would be voted out.
Nepal's media has also foretold the return of Udit Narayan, renowned Bollywood playback singer and one of the four Idol judges, to Nepal in future to make a new film, in which Prashant is making his debut as a playback singer.
Udit, who comes from Saptari district in Nepal's Terai plains, is also into making films in Bhojpuri, spoken in Nepal's border areas.
He would be returning to Nepal to shoot his third film, 'Darjeelingki cheli, Kathmanduko jwain' (Darjeeling's daughter, Kathmandu's son-in-law), that would be made in both Nepali and Bhojpuri.
The film would be shot in Darjeeling as well as Kathmandu.
To be directed by his brother-in-law Anand, the cast of the upcoming film has been kept tightly under wraps.
Prashant's role in it was disclosed only last week during the Idol show, when Udit told the contestant his wife Dipa had sent a 'gift' - to sing in the new film.

It would be a proud for whole Nepalese and to show the talent of Bir Gurkhas to those dhotis. Whatever the dhoti judge comments on his singing, i believe thta he is getting votes not only by people of his place but also he sings well as he don't have any formal traning. Emon parrot will be out next, and i wish amit will be runner up and oviously our Prashant will be the II. But but but Dhotis can play jal at any time. It is fact that if Prashant wins then Sony has announced the true results . but they can make different approach to make him fall. So we all should be united to make him win. Prashant is really great as he is from Greatest Nepal.
Good Luck to Prashant for this week. Being on top 3 is not a joke amongst over 1 billion people. Now he has proved to be a good singer. I hope people who are against his singing will keep quiet in this thread from now on.
Darjeeling, Aug. 19: BSNL has served up a rude shock to subscribers by quietly increasing its charges for sending SMS votes to support contestants in televised music talent hunts like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
Currently, an SMS vote costs BSNL subscribers Rs 3.50, which includes Rs 1.50 for the text message and Rs 2 for the confirmation that the vote has been registered. Even last week, the charge was Rs 3 and when the shows began, around three months ago, it was just Re 1.
While the change has occurred across the country, people here are feeling the pinch more than others because two local singers, Prashant Tamang and Karma Sherpa, are in the final rounds of Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa respectively. Everyday, lakhs of SMS votes are sent in their favour from this town alone.
Such is the craze that even people from Nepal are coming down to Darjeeling during weekends for the sole purpose of voting for Tamang and Sherpa.
Initially, BSNL was charging its prepaid customers Re 1 for an SMS vote, the normal charge for sending a text message. Within a month, however, the subscribers realised that an additional Rs 2 was being deducted once they received a confirmation of the vote from a particular server designated by the show hosts, Sony (Idol) and Zee Bangla (Sa Re Ga).
In the past one week, BSNL has again increased the initial charge from Re 1 to Rs 1.50 per text message, taking the total cost of an SMS vote to Rs 3.50. Private operators charge Rs 3 per SMS vote.
“The service provider is engaging in unhealthy business practices. The company has the prerogative to increase its rates, but it is its duty to inform the customers when revised rates are introduced,†said Sonam G. Wandi, an employment officer from Darjeeling and a BSNL subscriber.
BSNL invariably sends text messages to its subscribers to announce the launch of new services. However it gave no such intimation when the voting charges were revised. Divisional engineer (services) of BSNL A.K. Biswas initially claimed that he did not know of the new rates, having been out of station for a while. Later, however, he confirmed the hike.

Tamang Darjeeling, Sept. 2: Indian Idol contestant Prashant Tamang is coming to Darjeeling tomorrow on a whistle-stop tour.
The 24-year-old has sung his way to the Top Three positions in Indian Idol, the nationally televised talent search contest. One of the judges, Udit Narayan, has already promised to take him as a playback singer in wife Deepa Jha’s next Nepali movie.
“A public show will be organised for Prashant at the St Joseph’s School ground tomorrow,†said Tenzing Khambachey, municipality commissioner and a tireless campaigner for Tamang over the past four months. “We had to rule out Chowrastha for fear of a stampede.â€
Tamang is being brought to Darjeeling for a shoot at his house in Toongsoong by Sony Entertainment, the organisers of the contest. He is scheduled to travel on Darjeeling Mail from Calcutta and arrive at New Jalpaiguri station at 8.30am tomorrow.
The singer’s family members and friends will go down to Siliguri to welcome him at the station. Plans are being made to bring Tamang up to the hill town in an open top jeep so that his fans can at least catch a glimpse of him.
In fact, gates are already being erected on NH 55 to welcome the singer who, according to Khambachey, has united the hill people from Darjeeling to Sikkim.
According to the schedule available, the singer will first be taken to St Robert’s School, his alma mater. Later, he will make an appearance at Chowrastha — despite the fear of stampede — to see war veterans being felicitated at a programme there.
In the afternoon, Tamang is to be felicitated at the St Joseph’s ground. The singer might even belt out a few numbers at the venue.
“We’ve got classes till 5pm, but we hope to be able to find some time and jog down to the ground to hear Tamang sing,†said Sonam Gurung, a third-year student of St Joseph’s College.

It is a known fact that Prasant Tamang, having reached the Top Three at the ongoing Indian Idol has been receiving tremendous support especially from his home district of Darjeeling, The Doars and other places in India where the Nepali population is largely concentrated; not to mention Nepalis living in the Middle East, UK and Singapore from where voting through SMS is possible. Had this been applicable to Nepal as well, we are pretty much sure that Prasant would be garnering more votes than he currently is. For some of us here in Nepal, he is already the Indian Idol; so much is his 'craze' that life comes to a standstill when he is on the tube on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Because the privilege of sending votes from Nepal have been denied, some are resorting to sending money so that friends and relatives in India can send SMS on their behalf in support of Prasant to win the title; Babu Bogati and hair stylist Neel David having gone all the way to Darjeeling to generate funds for the same purpose. One such person who has undertaken the daunting task of collecting some funds here in Kathmandu is a gentleman named Bikram Golay (Chairman, Surena English Boarding School, Dhalku) along with some friends namely Subash Chettri, Vivek Thapa, GP Dhungel (President, Civil Forum Nepal) and singer Roj Moktan. They intend to collect as much as possible within the next couple of days and make arrangements so that more SMS are sent in time for the next round of Indian Idol. Also, it wouldn't hurt to see Prashant lose to Amit -- afterall, Amit is , I think, a better singer, and he also seems to have a pleasant personality.
