I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me.

This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector.

I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money.

If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position.

Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting.

Have a happy new year!!!! May 2007 bring you and your family lots of joys and riches.

Please help me to understand basic...

How can I buy and sell shares?

Oil shares too risky for newcomer/small players?

Scientists see long summer days ahead given unprecedented ice melting in the polar sea/regions, buying shares of those in the business of summer needs would be practical decision for small investors?

Thanks!

We closed below 1240 on Friday but managed to rally towards the end. I'm looking for one more rally before going for a bounce play.

Currently day-trading seems to be the way to go just because the medium-term direction is not clear and the volatility is there. Long-term we are still in a bear market.

hehehe mukondo u must not be following the earnings report AH.

financials are overbought besides the writedown by merill, and earnings misses by msft, goog.
all financials are trading down in aftermarket trading.

dennis gartman has been buying financials last few days/week.. his entry point is much lower than right now though. however gartman is no guru.

i think if u must go for quality names wfc, bac. otherwise only buy small quantities at a time to protect against downside.

I'll stay away from financials here, but SPY looks good for about 10% bounce. Stop will be a close below 1200 on S&P.

After Citi Group beating the street expectation, futures are up again.....looks like this rally will continue today...what an interesting week !!!!!

mukondo, u r little late to get into financials as they have rallied more than 20% in average. Be patient and wait, there will be another chance.....

I see ESLR going down big today. As the crude oil creeping back up, other solar stocks are turning green this morning. I am currently holding SOLF.

i think anything in energy sector is risky right now.. they had a great run... market may be going away from that sector...

however long term it is still great bet.

emini - do u have any other stock scans or vector vest subscription ?

the one from clearstation where
3-day EMA Cross Above 50-day EMA
that has still not found me any winners.

i have been tracking a some of the good stocks from that..  but they have not made much gains consistently and many also falling.

could it be since a lot of stocks are oversold so these ones cannot perform as well ?

Latoboy, check out finviz.com for the stock screener. Stockfetcher is good and cheap too. Clearstation will work in a bull market. Currently we are in a bear market so many stocks will fail. I think that oil is done for now. I don't think it will make new highs in the next 12 months.

One of the things that you can do is to make a list of 100 volatile stocks (preferably in tech, bio-techs and oil) and watch those. When the market turns up many will meet the buy criteria.

Okay guys, we've had 1000+ posts and almost 30,000 views. Due to personal commitments I will be unable to post here. If you have any questions today, I'll reply and then I'm done from here.

Here is one last advice that I got from Warren Buffet.

We had a chance to have lunch and Q&A with Mr. Buffet. One of the guys asked Mr. Buffet what he considered to be the most important thing in life. Mr. Buffet replied that the most important thing in life is how you raise your children. He said that you can make many mistakes in life and you will make misakes but you will always get a second chance. The only instance when you don't get a second chance is how you raise your kids. That one thing got stuck in my head like nothing else.
