Not that anyone would care but this is my honest analysis. Pardon my language and use of strong words, I wish I could have done without them, but then it would not provide clarity and explicitness regarding what I am going to put forth. Also, I am NOT stereotyping.
15 years ago, any (tom) dick (and harry) would consider himself a ‘modern nepali singer’ once he got hold of a guitar and a camcorder. Majority were boys - hence ‘he’. Suddenly everyone was Slash and Freddie Mercury and Bruce Springsteen. Honestly, their music sucked, and it sucked big time, and when it didn’t, they were either plagiarized from Deep Purple or David Bowie. But for some reason (thanks to their suave looks and music videos which fared better than Naryan Gopal’s) they became increasingly popular over the decade.
गुन्यु, चौतारी, नयन, सोल्टिनी, नौ डांडा, मुस्कान, मुटु, चियाबारी were some of the words used in plethora and repeatedly so. Funny how those terms sounded amid annoying guitar chords. Seriously, dating सोल्टिनी in a चियाबारी when you live in Baluwatar and visit Club X zone every weekend is oxymoronic. Get real, the last thing you want to do is date a country belle from बारबिसे (no offense to anyone from Brabise, I just wanted to use that place as an example). But those singers got by, and they got by very well. Guys drooled and girls ejaculated. Or else how would you think 1974 AD would have become so popular.
And Somewhere I could hear the souls of Narayan Gopal and Taradevi cry.
Think about this, Uday Sotang is a 100 times a better singer than that dude from 1974 AD, but for teenyboppers, he lacked charisma and swagger and perhaps he never plays a guitar.
Also, you LOVED Girish Pranil and now you hate Justin Beiber? Seriously?
While the ‘modern singers’ (or guitar heroes that I mentioned in my post in a different thread) were still raking the moolah, there was a sudden advent of rappers - Girish Pranil and some dudes who called themselves Okili (WTF is that name all about? Oakley?). I didn’t care about them, but million others did, and they became very popular no matter how shitty their songs were. Copying them, people like Norbu and Dirty Aaroz came into existence, and they rapped left and right, making complete idiots out of themselves – all they needed was a hoodie, a NY Yankees hat, a shiny bling from a kiosk in a mall in Junction Boulevard (I am just making this up) and some girls (or ‘biatches’ in rappers’ lingo) from Sunnyside who were really hot (I mean literally, they are so hot they wear skimpy skirts even in frigid January)and who danced on their songs as if they were Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.
And then there was rapaholic from London– he raped my ears.
Now speaking of the music video of this dude Kazio. (Is he chettri hence kaji aka kazio?, I wonder how he got that name from? Or is he from Kathmandu Jilla hence Kaji aka kazio? His name sounds interesting; I bet he has a reason for that). Nevertheless his song sucks just like many others, addressing a latina chick as soltini doesn’t make sense, she has no clue what that means. And beats? Really? I won’t be surprised if he plagiarized it from a Daddy Yankee Song (I mean how often do we Nepalese listen to reggaeton?).
However, I LIKED this ‘Kaan Kholera sun’. I know it sounds insane, but I really liked it which is so unlike me. I believe he has enough swagger, angst, attitude to pull it off. Also, considering he is singing rap and not any soul song, his lyrics are relatively better. He has a flow and his mannerisms reflect fair amount of rage. I just didn’t like those two clowns beside him. That ‘Aaite’ dude seriously needs a little introspection. He struggles in English; let alone Ebonics. The other one just seems like a sidekick who cannot sing to save his life.
Again, just a fair analysis. Tirades are welcome.
