It really freakes me out when someone comes up with a very good piece of writing here in sajha, however I cannot stop admiring it. How could you all have such a good vocabulary and understanding of every little detailes that we use while writing ? Is that what you guys developed over the years here in the us or something else???

I also think in that way. How do some of these people write so well? I also admire them...I wish I could describe some interesting stuffs vividly. I tried to write a story so many times, but I always stuck on the second paragraph.

I think so many things matter in this regard.

you have to be striken by some scenario to feel the circumstance to write good.

Sna,

The question you are asking is not new. I have asked it. Perhaps anyone who has written has asked the same questions you are asking. And there are tons of people who have written about the questions you are asking:

Start from this link:
http://www.scifidimensions.com/Mar02/howtowrite.htm

Truthfully, nobody can really teach you how to write.  These are only guidelines, suggestions and
tricks of the trade to help a fledgling author over a few of the humps we have
all battled. Godspeed, and good luck.

RULE #1 - WRITE!

All the time, everywhere.
Make the time.  Cancel dates,
forget TV, pass-by books and hot sex with the twins down the hallway.  A writer writes.  If you're not totally committed to Rule #1,
then don't bother reading any further and please pass this on to a friend who
really wants to become an author.

RULE #2 - WRITE IN YOUR OWN VOICE

Sounds silly, I know, but writing is one art form where it is generally
best to shoot from the heart.  Nothing
fancy.  Don't wax didactic with
palliardic xenophobes, if this is not how you normally talk (or even if you do).  And don't try to write up to the reader, or
down to him either.  One will only make
you a fool, the other - pompous.  Neither
will get you sold.  It also wastes a lot
of energy you'll need for other things.

The idea is really very simple.
If you can tell an interesting story, then you can write an interesting
story.  However, if your friends hate the
way you meander through a joke, or the plethora of unnecessary details you added
to that fishing trip tale, then these are major danger points to watch out
for.

Just be yourself. If you have something to say, eventually it will come
out.

I think writing comes with little bit effort. Read stories, poems, novels and that will inspire u to think. As u think, try to write it down in piece of paper. Go over that written material after few days and see how it sounds to u.

Some peopl are just better with the words as others are with paint and brush or math problems.

If u want to write, just be open with it. Have pen and paper ready....storms of words can reach to u anytime....just surf the storms as surfers ride the tides.....

Sna il
Is not that you were telling us that DV winners are not good in writing because they did not go to US college. I thought you have perfect english as you pointed out it. You are another hypocrite.  So you are DV winner too?

I do write sometimes here in Sajha. People might have different references and experiences when it comes to public writing. From my own experience, it doesn't get good overnight. Trust me. I had scratched almost hundred, if not less, poems before I posted my first one. Technically, it's difficult for us (me!) to write fluently and elegantly in English and the question is obviated. English is just an another language while, to me, Nepali is a culture. I often face this question from my american friends. " Do you dream in English or Nepali?" I think this is where the core of your question lies.

Have a  Halloween Weekend guys..

Interesting thread, and quite often I have struggled to find an answer to this question. Lately, after numerous reads, I have come to realize that there are only few factors that determine one as a good writer. Although I agree that it requires an above average skill to be a good writer, but believe me, it is not a rocket science. Here are few factors that affect writing as I have come to discover:

1. Observation - Every piece of writing depends on how observant one is, observation is also synonymous to wisdom, the degree of knowledge one posesses and how specific details one can provide.

For example, this is how an ordinary writer writes:

I rode my motorcycle to Jawalakhel this morning, it was cold

As compared to a seasoned writer who narrates:

I accelerated my newly purchased Kawasaki against the autumn breeze which  increasingly became cold as I rode towards Jawalakhel.

2. Humor and articulation - If you are reticent in reality, you often miss out on humor you could have created (although I have come across people who seem tacit at times yet come out with good one-liners and repartees).

An example of an ordinary humor - She farted so loud everyone started laughing.

An example of a humorous narration - Thanks to the spicy asian food, her bile juices churned up the tikka masala emanating a pungent smell out of her rear orifice to everyone's agony.

3. Verbiage and vocabulary - If you are not good with synonyms, don't even bother writing and if you are extremely good with it, use it appropriately.

For example - A two year old yelled at his sister 'You are incorrigible'. It makes very little sense that a two year old would muster enough knowledge to use the world incorrigible.

Another example - I was so irritated by my neighbor singing loud, I almost called up cops against I was debating with my wisdom to dial 911 after having been tormented by my neighbor's out of sync melodies.

There might be more factors that enhance good writing, but this is what I came up with at the moment, but then again, what do I know?

Uranus,

Apparantly you know quite a lot. No sarcasm here. Seriously, why don't you put your knowledge togethor and write a few stories and post it in sajha. Let me start you off:

Everything had been going great at my best friends birthday untill my date started to have severe stomach issues. Thanks to the spicy asian food, her bile juices churned up the tikka masala emanating a pungent smell out of her rear orifice to everyone's agony. Here I had brought this model to the party, and right in front of all of my friends, she let out one so loud it would have put some of the dirtiest Vikram tempo's in Kathmandu to shame. A ten year old at the party had looked at my model date and yelled, "You are incorrigible!" That was enough for me. I  hurriedly mumbled an excuse and ushered Ms Model to my Kawasaki parked outside. I accelerated my newly purchased Kawasaki against the autumn breeze which  increasingly became cold as I rode towards Jawalakhel.

very nice thread because I love to read and write.
@ sna I totally agree with Homeyji "Just be yourself. If you have something to say, eventually it will come
out."

I try to write once in a while and have posted few of them in sajha as well. I know that my grammar is not that good in both Nepali and English but I manage to write and let my heart out. Yes I am right I write what my heart says while writing I don't care about sentence structures, mechanics, vocabulary nothing at all I just write what comes out of my heart at the moment. Then after the first draft I try my best to perfect all other thing. I believe that no word speaks better than what comes out of your heart. This is just my personal view it might not apply to all.
For that matter I would like to recite one Nepali poem here (I don't know who wrote it. I read it somewhere a long time back)

"कवि कविता होश
 कविता कवी होश
अनि पो कविता हुन्छ
 शब्द थुपार्दै मा (भुत्रो) हुन्छ
भाव भएपो हुन्छ"

I always envy those who can write well . I wish that I had such skill but skill comes with lots and lots of writing. At last practice makes a man perfect so keep on reading and writing a lot........
Good luck sna hope to read one of your very soon

साने;
I am just trying to communicate, that is all.
As per your past comment "You claimed that your Writing was far better than mine and added what to expect from a D.V. WINNER".

Write well means write wisely too?
