What do you guys think about Tibetans who has a Nepali passport but
denies that he/she is from Nepal? They pretend as if they do not know
Nepal and get mad or show attitude if you ask them if they are from
Nepal. I have seen most come here on F-1 visa pretending they are
Nepalese and as soon as they land here they (some) hate Nepalese and deny the
fact that they are here because of Nepal and its people. They hate to be
affiliated with Nepal and its people.

No offense to anybody, I have in
fact very good Tibetan friends but honest opinions would be appreciated.

Once again I am not stereotyping against Tibetans but only to those who
possess the characters I have mentioned. Thanks!!

just like many people who immigrate to US don't really support USA, Tibetans due to their desperate political and socital situation turned to Nepal and India for asylum and got their citizenship. In their heart they are still from Tibetand I don't think Nepal helping them out turns them into a Nepali. As far as Tibetans hating Nepalese, there are cases where I can say that Nepalese hateTibetans just as much.

It depends on the person personality. I have different experience when i met a Nepali guy of Tibetan origin in US.  He used to talk a lot about Nepalese caste. He used to make jokes on Nepali people, dress, and food. I never argued with him because i didn't want to waste my time. After few meetings, i tried to stay away from him. I found that we have lots of cultural differences but don't think they really hate Nepali people.

Im confused .........can we call them Nepalese Tibetans?...lots of my Tibetan friends  who were born in Nepal speak both languages share our culture even dashain tihar holi etc, some of my cousins(Gurungs ) even married to Tibetans in boudha ETC so I have Tibetan relatives .......AND also  for Indian Tibetans ,   those who were born in India. and those actual Tibet born Tibetans...you cant help asking are you from Nepal or India.............they do look Nepalese to me...like lama, tamang gurung etc....anyways I just have good Tibetan friends and yet to meet a bad one BUT its true they dont like to be called Nepalese or Indians. JUST Tibetans...........but its funny how my Nepali Tibetan friends all eat the same food, enjoy all nepali music, movies and aware of our culture attending many nepali parties.....

I think we should be proud of the fact that we let Tibetans stay in Nepal in their time of crisis. I don't care if some of them like us or not. Often likes or dislikes stem from their individual experience. What matters is that hundreds of years from now on, if Tibet ever becomes independent (and I think they will one day), their posterity will thank us for being nice to their ancestors. I have visited Tibet and I have found a lot of Tibetans have really warm feeling towards us, because they remembered us at the time of their need.

Personally, I have always liked the Tibetans. Whatever the case, our ancestors and their ancestors lived side by side for centuries in the Himalayas.Sometimes we fought with each other, other times we lived amicably: just as all the neighbors do. I know that we better respect each other because our children will always have to live next to each other.

Hello - half_kattu;
all I can say as a Tibetan is that what you may have experienced and or believe in not true.

Sure there will be cases of such; this goes both direction.. we have often noticed here in sajha posting itself of rants posted by gentlemen like you about Tibetan. Sentiment like these comes due to host of reasons. So look back at your reason.

I live in Midwest, my best buddies are Nepali, and I don't see no reason in hating nepal/nepali; even though I personally went through shit lot of torments from your Nepali bureaucrats in Nepal. Do you know what do my profession states in my passport? "farmer," and you do not even want to know why?
Do you know we Tibetan gets special treatments in every Nepal government offices - rants rip/off , for every little work, we're asked to fork-out $$ for simply being Tibetan.

Do you know every Tibetan who do businesses in Nepal are yanked "..bhote chor desh chor.."

I can go on.. and I still say that we have n reason to hate Nepal/Nepali, my parents were here recently. I asked them to move here for good. Their response - we'll live in Nepal, unless Maoist come to kill us.

It's easy to judge people from other side. Come meet me some day, I will treat you for lunch/dinner or beer and will share our experiences in Nepal.

@lamak_98, I respect that man and thanks for the thoughtful insights. I met a handful of Tibetans who just hated Nepal and Nepalese
which made me very uncomfortable but you are right there would be such cases in both sides and should not be judged based on that. My best friend is a Tibetan too. To be honest with you, I shared this with him and together we posted this thread so that we could gather opinions. He dislikes these kind of attitudes too. Majority of us have harmony towards each other which is really good.

Once again thanks for the sharing your opinions.

Hi Lamak,

I saw some of the posts you provided link of. Needless to say, I am ashamed of those who wrote racists slur there, but you should also pay attention to the fact that several of the Nepalese politicians have attended programs of Tibetans despite protests from Chinese embassy. Awhile ago, some MPs even went to pay homage to his holiness the Dalai Lama despite Chinese protest. This all point to the fact there are significant number of Nepalese who value Tibetans among us.

Given uncomfortable (at times) relation between India and China, we can't antagonize China, and yet, we have done what we could for Tibetans. If you remember how Chinese ambassador was angry last year (Nepal police arrests and release the protestors so they can protest the next day was his accusation), you understand Nepali situation. In the past, when Indira Gandhi was almost about to annex Nepal (she did so to Sikkim), we were in no position to antagonize china and yet we found a way to strike a balance between our support of Tibetan cause and our desire to keep China happy.

We all know that Tibetans have  been given citizenship in a wink-wink policy. (Of course, Tibetan contribution to Nepal is huge too). I won't blame them if they tear apart citizenship when they come abroad, because outside of Tibet, I am sure all other countries are same for them. But we must have goodwill for each other. (and like your parents, I am sure lots of Tibetans believe that Nepal is the closest to their homeland in its topography and culture)

Bhote chor desh chod???.... well that would mean Most of my family too...half of which is.Gurung Tamang, sherpa(BHOTE) and Tibetans and rest of my family is mixed Baun, chhettry and some newars too.......Like I mentioned earlier I used to live in Boudha and have lots of friends and family with Tibetans....YET when it comes to BRIBES in Nepal.......we all know that NO ONE is exempt.....from poorest  to the richest. Its just our system in Nepal runs on Bribes just the scenario is different rich pay bribes and poor gets harshly extorted...and WHY Tibetans feel victims is anyones guess???? BUT in reality...almost every Nepalese from all castes are victims of this bribe and extortion system, we all  know that to do something in Nepal BRIBES makes things happen.......from court system, politics to police...BRIBES & EXTORTION are just another form of income to these under paid government officials thieves....all Nepalese hate them as you do too
. lamak_98 Ido understand your pain but Im trying to say that we feel your pain too.....we Nepali people dont get any special treatment.......we go through hell too....may be not in the same location where Tibetans suffer but almost everywhere else.  One can personalize hate and shower them to others being a victim BUT a broader view is that we are no different we all share a similiar fate. I just dont let politics and rare cases change my judgement ...........I harness no ill fate to anyone.Jay Nepal

Simple analogy...Nepal = USA, Tibet = Mexico

Illegal Mexicans in the US often hate the Americans. They feel mistreated, harassed, and looked down upon.

You'll usually hear them referring to the whites as 'gringos' in a nasty tones. :-)

Every where there is discrimination even in so called heaven and even in my and your home. There is no 100% equal treatment.
We may have mistreated them but for sure human becomes bias on following grounds: Race, Religion, Nation, grid, Language, minority, elite caste, wealthiness, Educated with less wisdom and logical thoughts and so forth.
So, no matter how long they have been in the country they have been residing if they were not born or raised their childhood in that country will not feel part of the nation and some time they themselves create discrimination situation.
Mexicans living in USA for over 20 years do not learn English and they want to be spoken in their native language and argue about discrimination.
So, did in NPR news, people from Muslim countries wanted to be recognized from their culture and religion rather than people individual and blame others being discriminated. If someone wanted to be communal than individual recognition then he/she will be different and there will be some or more discrimination.

i So the bottom line is how we going to look at a glass of water half empty or half full.

Why only Tibetians? I saw lots of Nepali with last name similar to Indian origin such as sharma/pandey/upadhaya/bhandari/etc (who has a Nepali passport but denies that he/she is from Nepal? They pretend as if they do not know Nepal and get mad or show attitude if you ask them if they are from Nepal.) pretend to be Indian. I have whole bunch of incident when I met with them at office and they disguise that they are from India but there ascent, dress up, attitude are completely Nepali (when asked about India…they even don’t know very very fundamental things). Even several time I asked them: Are you from Nepal? ....Reply is "NO"

If you are into IT industry then you will see this lot. I didn't unveil their identity instead I appreciated their trick coz when they change their nationality from Nepali to Indian they have better chance of surviving and work environment becomes pretty friendly. After all.....all famous people (including our Leader/Musician/Actor/Actress/Singer) are in good hand when they decline toward India.
