Why (Company Name) sucks and my ex-boss NSB is an asshole !

Because of lots of threaten given to this employee, I need to make some changes in this posting. Sorry for the inconvenience to the readers of this thread.

The sad news is that his blog was closed. So for the persons who didn’t get chance to read the original posting, I have posted the edited version.

The only thing changed here is the name of his boss (short name is provided) and the name of that company.

By an Employee | March 24, 2009

I am making this post to explain why my ex-workplace, a local branch in Kathmandu Nepal of a Dutch software company based at Holland absolutely sucks and why the manager of my ex-workplace, NSB is an asshole. (N Asshole B is a better name for this guy.)

After I finished Computer Engineering back in 2007, I was desperately looking for a job. Desperate, because I didn’t want to stay at home all day doing nothing after my Bachelors were over when most of my friends were already engaged somewhere and I really wanted to experience spending my own money.

One fine day when I was browsing a few Nepali job sites, I saw this vacancy published at jobsnepal.com. It was for a post of an ASP.NET Software developer put up by this company, exactly what I was looking for being an ASP.NET programmer. The offer was quite lucrative because the employer had on offer an European Work Environment, competitive salary and excellent benefits. What more could you ask for in Nepal? Excited after reading the employer’s offer, I emailed him a copy of my CV without any delay.

I was called for an interview and then after spending a whole day at the interview, completing a small web project on ASP.NET, I was given the good news that I was waiting to hear – I was hired and I was told that my salary for the first 3 months would be Rs.6000 (75 dollars) and then it would be increased to Rs.8000 (100 dollars) and then it would be gradually increased. The salary was not at all a comforting match for the advertisement that the employer had put up earlier but still, I was really excited to get my first job. As soon as I got the news, I called my dad and my girlfriend to tell them that I got my first job. They were very happy for me.

Although the advertised "European Work Environment" was nowhere to be found at office, I thought I would still get the remaining – competitive salary and excellent benefits. A TV and a microwave oven at the office to warm your lunch is not going to create an European Environment when the office even lacked an air conditioner and a group of 5 guys needed to share a fan in the summer and a single room heater during the winter. Things started looking grim at office as time passed by. And I was not the only one; almost all the employees at office had complaints. Then it all started becoming clear slowly that the manager, NSB was actually hated by almost everyone at office. He was a bloody miser and everyone blamed him for embezzling the fund sent to him to be distributed among the staffs as salary by the parent organization at Holland. Some still seem loyal to the manager, but that was understandable, those were the ones who were fed well by the manager for serving him.
Back then, I started doing a bit of research personally about the issue. I found out that it was stated on the company’s website that they charge their customers to a maximum of 45 Euros per hour of work of an Asian Programmer. But most of us at the office were not even receiving 0.5 Euro per hour for our work. And after I saw that, it was pretty apparent for me that this lad, NSB was siphoning away the money. From that day on, the sight of this guy would warm my blood. Still I had to hang in there until I got some other job and I had to be nice to him so that I could collect my job experience letter at the end of my stay at that office. But I was not able to maintain a healthy relationship with that asshole for long. He had his own logic on things when the rest of the office had something else.

After the first 3 months were over, I was asked by that asshole manager to sign on a contract that read that I would be paid Rs. 6000 for 6 months from the start, that means 3 more months on the same pay, a clear deviation from what I was told earlier. I denounced the offer and told him that he had instead told me to increase my salary to Rs. 8000/month after the first 3 months when he hired me. He then pretended trying to prove that he forgot what he told me earlier.

Similarly, one day, I needed to take a leave for my personal affairs. And on that same day, he had scheduled a program for all the staffs to go go-carting. Don’t be amazed that a miser arranged a program for his staffs. Actually at that time, an official from the parent organization was visiting Nepal from Holland and it was that asshole’s way of showing to the official that he was doing some spending here at Nepal and also to please him. I went to him to talk about my leave, he told me that either I was coming with them to go-carting or that day would be counted as a non-paid office day for me when everyone else were receiving their salary for visiting the go-carting arena with him. I become furious for obvious reasons that day and had to tell him that "I am not gonna let you set preferences for me and if you want to count it as a non-paid day, fine, do it!” And since that day, the tussle had begun.

Next time, it was the month of February. On Valentine’s Day, I had plans with my girlfriend. So I wrote him an email on that day to tell him that I would not be able to make it to the office that day. I almost always mailed him when I had to take a leave earlier. But since he already had received some nice word-blows from me, he went on to call my mom that day when I was out with my girlfriend. When I returned back home that day, my mother told me that my boss had called me. I was surprised and furious too that this lad wanted to control me like he would do to a kindergarten kid. I carry a mobile phone and that asshole had both my home and mobile phone numbers but he opted to make a call to my home to reach me, what a freak? The next day, in the morning, I got a call from him again, this time on my mobile phone. I picked up and he was there at the other end shouting at me for sending him an email to ask for a leave. I had to shout back and tell him that it was fine when I did the same earlier, what’s was different that day? Then he put up the question that I was hoping he would. He asked me: "Chirayu, do you want to work with us or not?". I said, NO. Then this guy told me "You are fired as of right now". Poor lad didn’t even know that he had no right to fire me after I had already left his job – I answered "NO" for his earlier question which should have been understood as me leaving the job, but how would a dumb ass understand?

Asshole is a better middle-name for him than “edited”. N Asshole B. This guy is a MBA from University of New Hampshire – Whittemore School of Business and Economic. Amazing, ain’t it? A 10th grader would have managed the office better than him. This guy really deserves an asshole award. So here’s the ass-hole award for Mr. N Asshole B. Go get it dude!
And if anyone for any reason doubts your status as an asshole, I have an advice for you, JUST BE YOURSELF !

Probably this kind of exploitation happens in almost all IT offices in Nepal, but if you can expose guys like N Asshole B, it can be hoped that this trend of exploitation of labor by outsourcing companies in Nepal can be brought down.

Navin seems to be an entrepreneur. He secured a project, put a job offering, you applied and you worked. As long as he follows the salary rules of the governing land, he can turn around and sell the product for 4500000 Euro per hour for all I know. That is business.

At any point, you did not like the environment, you could have simply quit!! But you decided to hang in anyway, why!!!!!

Next, after you quit, I do not seem to agree with any of your claims but one. After the end of three months when you were not paid as promised (2000 more), you should have dealt with the issue then. Ok fine, you waited. I just think that your claim now is for Rs. 2000 X 3months = Rs.6000 at the most. You have no right to portray and try to defame Navin at a personal level. That is like being a YCL who are jungalees and your write up seems to be much more learned and it is certainly not fair to categorize you as one of them. Sorry for not agreeing with you totally. Take no offence.

There is always someone taking your sides and defending you, even if it involves corruption, murder and rape. And also are people who will defame another Nepali at the drop of a dime. Why do we still think Nepali people are better morally than the rest of the world? You can take Nepal away from any Nepali, not the Nepali from a Nepali.
Shame on you both.

An interesting read.

Both parties are at fault.

a) When an employer promises you something such as raise etc get it in writing. Word of mouth is never credible although depends on the individual but why take chances?

b) He exploited and paid less but isn't that what you agreed upon while accepting employment? You thought it was lucrative offer since it was your first job. "something is better then nothing" in your own words.

c) Intervening in your personal life by calling your parents sounds ridiculous.

d) He is the manager. He runs the company. It would have been wise if you had left instead of trying to change the system. FYI welcome to the cooperate world this is how things work out in real life.

e) No point in hanging in there after you have lost all the interest and motivation to work for him only ending up writing a long defamatory article with graphics and creating a blog.

f) His management style sounds cost effective but sure he does not treat his employees right.

Damauli guy...
All I can say is wake up and welcome to the real world... The last thing you want to do is bash our ex employer at this time....My suggestion would be to join business school at this point and understand how the corporate world works....by no means I am doing devil's advocate here...

"Bosses get paid to be ass-holes" so wake up and smell the coffee!

It is very unethical of you to try to defame your ex-boss. If your resume comes my way I will never hire you!

Hello guys, I am the one who made this post on my blog and I want to thank my friend damauli_guy for putting it here.

It seems that some of you out here have got me real wrong here.

I am not angry because he paid me less. I made up my mind to work
for him for that money. I am fine to that point. Here are the things
that I was not happy about:

1) I am a human. I would always strive to get more and so does
everyone. I was working hard and expecting an increment, so were others
at the company, but none got what they deserved.

2) That asshole would tell us not to tell the Dutch about the salary? Why would he do that?

3) That asshole was paying the same $100/mo to programmers who
had been with the company for more than an year. I personally know them
and I know they are very competitive programmers. They stuck with the company because they wanted to go to the US for jobs, and they wanted
a clean and clear job experience letter from this guy. I had no reasons
to stick.

4) How could this company charge their customers a maximum of 45
euros per hour of work of an Asian Programmer and give us 45 Euros per
15 days of work? You outsource to cut down expenditure, fine, but a MBA
should equally think about his staffs as he thinks about his boss but
how would an AssHole MBA do that?

@nepalichora

Ain't it unethical for my ex-boss to make a call at my home when I carried a mobile phone?
Ain't it unethical for my ex-boss to put up false things in the job advertisement?
Ain't it unethical for him to just think about the top-hats and neglect us?

I have no regret what so ever of the things I have done.
Probably this kind of exploitation happens in almost all IT offices in

can be hoped that this trend of exploitation of labor by outsourcing
companies in Nepal can be brought down.

@TheDude

I didn't hang on. When I had enough, I quitted. That's what you do, ain't it? When you have had enough, you quit, I did the same.

I am not claiming the money. You got it totally wrong. And I don't know what made you derive the figure from the maths. I am sure you didn;t read my post properly, I ain't making any claims for money. What's up with the 6 thousands that you came up with? I don't know what made you get to maths.

Now do you get m?, I made this post to expose him and to make people aware of the company so that new grads like me don't have to go though the same experience as did.

You are nothing but a fired and disgruntled employee. Your blog is not about your boss more so it is about you!! You can blame your ex-boss all you want but it will not change a thing when he is not here to to tell his side of the story. <br><br>In US your attempt to "character assassination" of your ex-boss is illegal, defaming your ex-employer is also illegal. You are lucky you are in Nepal otherwise you would have been sued your ass off.<br><br>Sorry brother I cannot agree with you. Apparently you have not seen the real world. Look at your blog after ten years and you will find that you have closed more doors for your own self, you might never know what future might have had in store for you.<br><br>You got one vote from me - you are an  azhole.<br><br>Well I am out of here, do not wish to chat with you further, brother...<br>

You looking for a job  and the would be boss says you that after two months later I will give you raise, who do you think will ask for black and white ( writing). If that was the case in other country will end up paying, but it is NEPAL and Nepali mentality, therefore BOSS is always right.

So bottom line is once you feel things are not going well better to leave but it is okay to put the issue so other will know what is going on and as weel that aa-----hole too. If he hang on there for a while evern after the issues , so what ,  need to pay bills and rent,  but it is okey to expose.

My point, do not worry what these people write, it is perfectly okey to expose someone without morale, even you worked there after issue. I am with you.

I don't believe this salary (Rs. 6000 per month) for ASP.NET programmers.

The salary of a peon (clerk) in Nepal is Rs. 6600.

See in this link.

@NepalChoro, character assasination , my arse. He deserves what I did to him. I ain't exagqerating anything. That's a true story, what i have done is taken a true story and put it in my blog. Like @Nepalibhi said, a peon earns more than Rs.6000 here. I am a ASP.NET Programmer. Hell, I deserved more. See how much he's exploiting Nepalese workers.

Why do you think your work is more deserving than peon's work ?  Any job contributing to society  is important.
What do you know about foreign work standard ?  You should be grilled in Japanese or Korean work environment from 5 AM to 12 AM with 2 hours of travel each way for work in a packed transit with limited salary and no holidays.  You studied for 4 years in some private home turned mushroom college of Nepal and thought of yourself as Bill Gates ?  If the Nepalese generation of computer programmers are all like you, then I am sorry to say no Nepalese will be hired in reputed companies.

izzap if you think you should keep mum about being treated unfair at work then i am sorry to say you are better off being a programmer. For all the amount of effort and dedication you give to be a programmer you need to fight for your right and speak for injustice, which apparently you seem to have gave up since you never fought back of the fear of losing the grip in the job you are in.

to the blogger no matter where you are from, you're an engineer so don't sell cheap. good luck for your job search.

Erratic -
A programmer is not an engineer and I do not want to be called a programmer - you can keep that title for yourself.  I agree with you when you say fight for your rights and speak for injustice.  But venting frustration in some cheap blog is like burning tires in the streets of Kathmandu.

And as far as your comment goes that I never fought back - I am a survivor and that is why I am where I am and it seems you are a whiner and that is why you are where you are.

This is totally non-sense to humiliate boss. Boss is absolutely right
in this scenario. What do you expect just coming after 4 years study
from NEPALI college?? Work Experience does matter. If you don't have
experience then you won't be paid more even you do the same job like
other highly paid employees.Like others mentioned here, WAKE UP boy,
learn to face real world.

 1. You are frustrated because your salary is less than "Peon" But remember Peon got more experience than you.

2. You are frustrated because you're not given leave on the official
trip day. This is what inexperience staff does. They got no idea how
important is official work. Always try to be boss and make decision.

3. You become more fraustrated because your leave is not approved on
14th Feb. Non-sense, Is there any company which gives leaves to their
staff on 14th Feb??

You just learn to use computer. There are many people who can do what
you are doing with computer. So, Guess who is Asssshole?? If you have
wake up, you'll see Assssshole in front of your mirror...

Looks like most of the people here have been enslaved by America’s capitalist system. That is why they are screaming “Boss is right.”

From what I understand, if the guy paid you and his other employees less than what the dutch company had told/given him to pay, he is exploiting his employees and pocketing their salaries.  That is cheating, simple and clear.

You see it is like a “sweat shop,” running it cheaply by under-paying the employees, hiring under-age employees, making them work under deteriorating work environment, making them work long hours etc. You can say, “well at least these people have a job”, but the fact is, they are being treated as 21st century slaves. That is a corporate world and it won’t be too late before it will change. That is for sure. Who had imagined in the wildest of their dreams that the royals, the offsprings of gods, the chosen ones, would one day be run down by peasants. But that happened in French revolution, and the domino effect continued until recently in Nepal.

So go ahead, defame this assh**e, we need people who are not scared to bring into lights the bosses, the corporate that are abusing and enslaving people in this 21st century. One more reason to anger YCL.
