Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, April 24 - Come
September, the world's two best known fast food chains will come to
Kathmandu -- KFC, also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza Hut.

Both
KFC and Pizza Hut are being brought by R.J. Crops who owns the soft
drink company Varun Beverages, the manufacturers of Pepsicola in Nepal.
R.J. Crops has the franchise of both for India. Both these food chains
will be opened at Annapurna Complex, Durbar Marg. There will be two
separate teams to handle daily operation.

KFC
is the world's most popular chicken restaurant chain specialising in
Original Recipe, based in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. KFC was founded by
Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952 and primarily sells chicken in pieces,
wraps, salads and sandwiches. While its primary focus is fried chicken,
KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken products, sides and desserts.
Sanders sold the entire KFC franchising operation in 1964 for US $2
million. Since then, it has been sold three more times, most recently
to PepsiCo. It made it part of its Tricon Global Restaurants division,
which has now been renamed Yum! Brands.

The
original handwritten recipe is kept locked away at the KFC corporate
headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky as a closely-guarded secret. Only
two members within the Yum! corporation know the recipe in its entirety.

Pizza
Hut is the world's largest pizza restaurant chain and international
franchise based in Addison, Texas, USA. Pizza Hut offers different
styles of pizza along with side dishes including pasta, buffalo wings,
breadsticks, and garlic bread. It has approximately 34,000 restaurants,
delivery-carry out units, and kiosks in 100 countries.

Pizza
Hut is also one of the flagship brands of Yum! Brands, Inc. Pizza Hut
is the world's largest pizza chain with over 12,500 restaurants across
91 countries. In India, Pizza Hut has 137 restaurants across 36 cities.

R.J.
Crops is one of PepsiCo India's largest franchisee bottler having
operation in India, Nepal and Africa. Of late, this group also has
investment in Nepal's housing sector. The Mega housing project - Park
View Horizon in Dhapasi is being built by this group.

This news make me even sad ....
Kathmandu is already full of Obese people and its rising so rapidly.....A rough data collected by University of Aberdeen shows about 40% of the resident of the Valley is clinically obese (BMI = 23+ )

No doubt of their success, but this will be a start of fried chicken and pizza business..... The economy may be helped but, the people wont be...

If the government wants to tackle the problem at its root, KFC/PizzaHut or products selling high calorie foods must come under stronger licencing procedure.

I will go for momo than KFC or Pizza any day of a week.  on the top of that these fast food restaurants will be much more expensive for an average nepali.  however, its good for those who like KFC and Pizza from Pizza Hut.  :)

I don't feel proud if I hear if KFC and Pizza hut is now in Kathmandu.

Nepal need to seriously think about balancing her budget.

with limited source of income for average family, it's indeed sad to see huge sums of money being outsourced in all these foreign patents and franchises.

What Nepal really needs is to come up with sustainable source of income for average family.

Unless we do not practice sustainable way of spending money, no amout of income is sustainable.

KFCs and Pizza Huts offer their products. It is not that our choice of buying them is also taken away from us.

our proverb: 'salivating is killing your aat(soul). so eat what you like'-  wooff it is just bakwas.

Simple life, simple thought and simple living.

Galat lekhya vaye..please do correct me.

well, i think this is a good thing

fast foods will come and tourists will have a bigger selection of restaurants

sooner or later , other companies will follow

and that will slowly make kathmandu better .....

Obesity is going to a problem no matter what, unless the consumer understands the concept of MOTAPAN .... they are gonna eat either mcdonalds greasy food or nepalese macha and masu ...

when new businesses open, new jobs are created

KFC and PIZZA hut both are alright places to eat once in awhile   ..................so its cool  i think

folks! thats only for the people of  country who got big money. Its not like in case of here in States who drinks 211 beer or burns cheap cigarette like usa gold howeve they can afford eat dollar menu in mac or kfc or whateve'. The statement is we dont have to feel so much happy if anyone is owing such kind of franchise in our country. See rich people are getting richer poor are getting more poorer. How many people do you think there are to eat in that cafe?. We have to cope with the  problem. What I think is instead of the person who has started this franchise better if he has started any kind of industry rather spending money on franchise( Although they hire local people but certain portion of investment is goin out too) I dont oppose frannchise right now jus mean to say its not a right time....It just like if i own house and i wanna one more house thinking that i will be generating some money, thats my wrong thought. better if i start a new businees of industry where i can employ more people for a long time in a long run. Sounds communism but im not. I just mean to say franchise in Nepal like in city of bangkok or Mumbai doesnt mean to sense that we are developed now. these days the local one plate of momo is usually Rs. 25? In general its hard for people in average to eat this momo even. Sagsabji, grains and gas has reached the sky.!!!!! We have to bring our economy in such a good way that the menu of KFC and menu of momo in town should be equal and low.

In conclusion we dont have to be so much happy.
