Tourist arrival up by 18 percent in October

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Nov 3 - Nepal saw an impressive 18 percent growth in arrival of tourists via air in the month of October as compared to the same month of the last year. According to a press release issued by the Nepal Tourism Board on Saturday, the visitors' arrival data released by Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in October shows the healthy

growth of 18 percent-- up by 6617 tourists.

China and Sweden have registered a colossal growth of 133 percent and 91.7 percent respectively, the highest of the arrival of the overall tourists.   American markets like Canada (43.2%) and USA (40.3%) have continued to show the positive result despite their travel advisory. Denmark (88.6%), Austria (56.9%), Norway (55.4%), Belgium (50.3%), S Korea (37%) and Germany (33.3%) clearly show the revival of Nepali tourism as the peace process continues. Other upcoming markets like Bangladesh (51.1%) and Sri Lanka (56.6%) have also shown positive growth. The total arrivals in the last nine months have gone up by 30 % having

295,855 visitors by air in comparison to the same period last year.

Each country has recorded very optimistic figures except the Indian market. The cheap tour packages floated by South East Asian and European

countries have reportedly enticed the Indians, which is one of the

reasons for decline in tourist arrivals from India, according to the NTB officials.

Since Cosmic Air has already resumed its service to New Delhi and other airlines are expected to increase flight frequency in this sector soon, tourist arrival will definitely increase from India in next few months, the NTB claimed. The launch of service of Silk Air from Singapore and Etihad Airways from the United Arab Emirates in the month of October drifted positive message to the world that Nepal is a happening destination. With the operation of these two airlines, it is expected to increase the number of passengers from Singapore, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Europe.

I was following the interview of Dr Bishnu Pant, Assistant Chief Economist, (Asian Developmenn Bank, Manila) and what I read was not so exciting.

An interesting fact is that Nepal will require another 22 years to come at par with Bhutan. ADB's (Asian Development Bank) recent study on purchasing power parity (PPP) shows that Nepal is at the bottom amongst 40 countries in Asia and the Pacific region.  Furthermore, Nepal's inequality level is one of highest in whole Asia.

Sorry its not a good news neither bad, just a fact.

Nepal scientists seek IAEA membership

(KATHMANDU, Oct 14) - International Automatic Energy Agency (IAEA) has approved Nepal's entry as a member and is waiting for approval from the United States. Surprised? ...."Without being a member of the Agency, Nepal could not buy high doses of radio isotopes and other nuclear material which are important in various research work and in mutating the genes of plants and animals, as well as in the treatment of cancer."... As the country has an atomic energy policy, an atomic energy plant can also be built with close monitoring and evaluation by the Agency. And Nepali scientists will be given intensive training by the Agency in this respect.  (Source: Nepalnews)

From BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/content/articles/2007/08/22/mark_wagh_everest_feature.shtml

Cricket- Over to Everest

When the cricket season ends, Nottinghamshire's Mark Wagh is off to conquer the world's highest peak.

It's a familiar question thrown at batsmen and bowlers - what do you do once the cricket season is over?

Well, in the case of Notts batsman Mark Wagh, the answer is an expedition to Mount Everest.

"We're going to Everest base camp," says Mark. The idea is to raise money for charity.

"It's been organised by the Professional Cricketers Association. (Nottinghamshire cricket colleague) Graeme Swann is threatening to come out with me. There should be a fair mix of people."

Although Mark won't be attempting to conquer the summit of Everest the aim to reach Base Camp is a daunting one as it's more than 5000 metres above sea level.

"We walk for about 12 days, up to nine hours trekking a day. I quite like doing little challenges. I thought this would be a good mental challenge and the scenery will be stunning."

No rest

Mark was born and brought up in Birmingham and is coming to the end of his first season with Notts.

Once the Everest challenge is completed he doesn't plan to put his feet up.

"I'm quite keen to play some cricket somewhere. One place I haven't been is New Zealand. I'd like to go there."

Marat Safin former world no 1 tennis plyayer in Nepal.

Marat Safin is changing rackets for ice picks

Marat Safin who is  known for his good looks, large physical size, athleticism, controversial antics, and aggressive "power" style of play. and yes FORMER world no 1 players

Over the weekend, Russian tennis star Marat Safin bagged his very first summit - Murat (4100 m). Last week Safin arrived in Nepal with the intention of climbing Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth highest mountain, giving the former world number one a fresh challenge.

According to Reuters,

“ Safin is part of an eight-member Russian expedition which is due to leave Nepal today to climb Cho Oyu, the 8,201-metre (26,906 ft) mountain on the Nepal-Tibet border, a Nepalese hiking official said.

This is an interesting climb but he has (had) very good physical exercise,” Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said yesterday.

“He is young and energetic although the climb is challenging. I’m hopeful he will succeed,” said the official, providing logistic support to the expedition.

The expedition is expected to last over a month, which is also likely to rule Safin out of this month’s Davis Cup semi-final against Germany.

In response to journalists’ questions to Russian Davis Cup Captain Shamil Tarpishchev why Marat Safin had preferred alpinism to playing tennis for Russia, Tarpishchev said: “ Whatever is happening with Marat is internal. He has issues with himself.”

Prospering with Giants
- Rakesh Wadhwa

For the people of Nepal there are two options: they can view their landlocked status as an excuse for their lack of economic progress, or, they can regard being linked to the two largest and now also the two fastest growing countries in the world as an incredible opportunity.

To me, China and India , with their elephant size economies offer a gargantuan opportunity for this nation. Whenever I think of Nepal 's neighbouring elephants, I ask myself: “When will Nepal learn to dance with them?”When will Nepal realise that by providing the people in these two countries with what they seek, Nepal will get what it wants – wealth beyond imagination for its people? If you want people to give you what you want, you must first provide them with what they desire.......to be contd...........

Nepal Launches 3G — Becomes the first to do so in South Asia

Nepal Telecom (NT), the state-run communication supplier, is launching Third Generation (3G) mobile services from Thursday. The service is being launched on the occasion of International Telecom Day. NT officials claim that Nepal is going to be the first country in the South Asia region where 3G mobile services will be launched.

According to NT director Buddhi Acharya, the SIM card for 3G service will cost 4,195 Nepali rupees (abut 64.5 U.S. dollars) and its charges will be similar to that of prepaid mobiles.

For the time being, the 3G services will be made available to area within the Ring Road in the capital city of Kathmandu.

Now Nepalese will be able to surf internet from their compatible Mobile handsets at more than a broadband speed of 384kbps

For a Mobile Freak like me This is a great news and i never expected that Nepal , a poor and small country of mine, will be the first to launch 3G service in south Asia. the mobile industry in Nepal started booming just a year ago and now with 3G available its having bright future ahead.

With introduction of 3G by Nepal Telecom its now possible for nepalese to make video calls. As compared to India , India being booming economy and being at top for Mobile penetration has not been able to launch 3G yet .
