PM granddaughter’s big fat wedding mocks law

BY BIKASH SANGRAULA

KATHMANDU, July 7 - The capital city Thursday saw one of the biggest wedding parties since the series of wedding parties for Chief of Army Staff General Pyar Jung Thapa's daughter two months ago. The bride was Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's granddaughter Melanie Koirala Jost, and the groom was Rubel Chowdhury, a Bangladesh national. The venue: Hotel Everest.

A hotel staffer said that some 3,500 guests were invited to the reception. Among them were Nepal's who's who, including deputy prime ministers, ministers, parliamentarians, leaders of political parties, heads of diplomatic missions, security chiefs and officers, administrators, civil society leaders, publishers and editors. Journalists and party workers were also invited.

However, Maoist leaders were not present, and neither was the prime minister, who is battling pneumonia at the ICU of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center. Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala was also present.

A Nepali Congress leader who was one of the invitees equated the party in terms of lavishness with that of the army chief's daughter, and said this is a matter of public concern. He also complained that he had to wait for about half an hour in the traffic jam while on his way to the reception.

A traffic police officer, who was scrambling in the hotel parking lot to manage the ever increasing number of vehicles, said some 1,500 vehicles arrived at the venue since 2 pm. With the hotel parking lot running out of space, vehicles had to be diverted to the parking lot at Birendra International Convention Center.

The prime minister's daughter Sujata Koirala had booked the hotel's pool-side cafe for 2 pm to 6 pm and the Grand Ball Room for invitees from 6 pm onwards. The bride's family also booked several rooms at the hotel for the groom's family.

Traffic moved at snail's pace in the Baneswore and Maitighar areas right from the afternoon till late evening, thanks to the massive attendance at the wedding party. In fact, traffic came to a total standstill in these areas for hours in the evening and several dozen traffic personnel had to sweat it out and scream to clear the jam.

The country's Social Behavior Reform Act 1976 bars marriage parties from having more than 51 invitees. The recent series of wedding parties of the army chief's daughter was strongly criticized for lavishness.

I think everybody's big fat wedding mocks the law,I was surprise to see that no more than 51 invitees are allowed according to our law,I have barely been to any wedding with less than that number of invitees, this shows that we all have broken and mocked "The country's Social Behavior Reform Act 1976" either by throwing such parties or by attending it,everybody affords big parties according to their pocket,in one way or other we all have mocked the law,so no point in criticising this one.

I guess the money illegally made from Laud Air fiasco was burning hole in Koirala pockets. So, there had to be an outlet.

I wonder how much of public resource was used in the wedding. I hope, they learned the lesson from Pyan Jung's daughter's wedding backlash.

Having said that, why Everest Hotel? That hotel used to be 5 Star, but no more. It looks so decrepit. Even Hotel Shangrila looks better.

What is everyone's problem? If they have money, let them spend it. May be it was on the bangladshi groom who must be very wealthy. Besides. PMs do get certain government perks to spend on their family memeber wedding legally I am sure. First, it was Pyar Jung's daughter, now this. All we do is complain. We just can't stand to see others having fun..pure communists.

Personally , I do not care if people spend money lavishly in the weddings. If they earned it wether illegaly or legally cause at least some people are getting buisness out of thier money.Anyways no body cares in nepal how you earn money that is why everyone is quite.

The point is these people whined a lot when pyar's daughter was getting married to indian now bangladeshi .

Seems like there is lack of eligible bachelors in Nepal.Yesho Nepal tira jana paryo jasto cha kunchai corrupt mantri ko chori ready cha Yesho suggestion pau na..lol

Thapa payen .. jane ho nepal tira..canada ma ta keti payen sathi le!!

As far as I am concerned, I do not care who spends how much and how they do it, but be fair to everyone..don't be biased..

Karmarana: I do no mind if they move the capital elsewhere..just let people live peacefully.

marriages like this triggers unhealthy competition in the society. Poor parents and girls have inferiority complex. Thier money are being robbed by politicians and spent on bangaladeshis... shame to the country....

"The country's Social Behavior Reform Act 1976 bars marriage parties from having more than 51 invitees."

I am no particular fan of Girija's family, or for that matter, Pyar Jung's family (though I wish them all well, and congrats to the newly weds!), but let's think about this issue here: It's the law -- like the one above -- that needs to be scrapped altogether.

Conceptually, who gives any government anywhere any right to monitor the number of people invited to a private party? Is counting the number of guests invited to a private party even the job of a government? [Thye Act was passed in 1976, by the then Rastra Panchayat, at the height of the first wave of corruption scandals during the Panchayat times . . . how relevant is such a law for present times?]

As it is, Nepal has long remained a a country where the rule of law does not matter. Much of that is due to the fact that many of our laws -- family laws, corporate laws, criminal laws -- are khattam, jhoor, unrealistic and just plain stupid, designed largely
to harrass and to control people rather than to facilitate them to do their work without hurting others.

No wonder then, the more rules we have in place in Nepal, the more easily they get broken by all and sundry.
