I thought NY had 10's of thousands of Nepalis...yet there are probably 40-50 at the most at this "rally"....c'mon I aint a royal supporter but you can do better than some cheesy "Stop the killing in the land of Lord Gautam Buddha"....ahhah....almost as generic would have been something like "Stop the killing in the land of the tallest mountain in the world--mount everest".....Nepal is more than just Mount Everest and Gautum Buddha..besides, those two things do not have anything to do with the political instability that is going on there right now..

Next Week in NY:The "stop the killing in Nepal since it's the birthplace of the Momo" march

"The King of Nepal is the last resort of peace" I doubt most actually believe in that.

I have come to learn that NTV and other offical media channels in Nepal reported that there were 1000 people at the rally. And some obviously pro-King camps in the US are claiming 200-300. Let's get the facts straight: I was there, and at the peak of the program at 2:20 pm (the program was supposed to have started at 1:00 pm), I did a literal headcount. (See the picture below) The result: 72+. Few more people came towards the end of the program, so I can give them a very maximum of 90.

They obviously must have had reported to the authorities that a very large # of people were going to be gathering at the place, and accordingly a large area was cordoned off by the police, with three police cars on standby. The scene at 1:30 pm when I got there:

Few performances by various singers were part of the program, singing "rashtriya" geets:

The key organizers, some of whom, I was told, was sent as a team from KTM at the government's expense with a specific task of organizing pro-king rallies in the US:

The participants reported comprised of Nepalis from DC/VA/MD area, Boston and, of course, NY. None of the prominent faces (in political of social circles) from NY were present, except for the President of Sherpa Community of NY, who seemed to have been very successful in mobilising Sherpas to attend the rally -- more than half (about 40) of the participants were Sherpas. As for the other half, most of them I figured were from DC/VA/MD area, and very, very few from Boston. The head of the Boston delegation delivering his short speech:

With all due respect to the participants, whose right to express their support to the King is absolutely unquestionable...

Isn't it ironic that they'd show their support to the King exercising the very freedom -- the freedom of expression -- that is now BANNED in Nepal?

And isn't it sad that they'd claim the cause of "peace and democracy" and exploit the naivety of some individuals to rally support to the King who continues to deny democracy to his subjects? How absurd can it get: Some are promising more democracy from less.

Finally, as a current New Yorker myself, I obviously was intersted in New Yorkers who were at the rally. As I said above, there were none of the prominent faces to be seen from the NY Nepali community at the rally, but I managed to talk to 3 of the Sherpa friends, whose community, as already mentioned above, comprised of the majority of the participants, on why they were there.

2 of them said that they were there to show support for peace, not necessarily for the King. I then asked them if they truly believed that the King was capable of bringing genuine and sustainable peace to Nepal, highlighting some of the reasons why I do not believe he would. They responded by saying that they too were skepticle, but "ke garne, sathi haru le jaam jaam bhanyo, ani aako."

The third one I managed to talk to actually said that he was there just to listen to one of the Sherpas sing! The singer, who also sang few lines from a famous rashtriya geet, and who also happens to be a friend, mind you, has a remarkably spell binding voice!

Finally to those who claim majority on the King's side: There was a similar rally held at the very same spot few weeks back by those who opposed King G's move. At a 12 degrees F ko freezing cold, on a WEEKDAY (Thursday), and from ONE CITY (NY only), approximately 60 brave souls managed to take part in the rally.

Compare that to 90 (at the very most) participants at the pro-king rally...at a mild 43 degrees F, on a WEEKEND (Sunday), and from THREE CITIES (DC area, Boston and NY).

So was the true story of the rally past Sunday!

lol, palpali gaamle...OJ might have been there too...I was wondering why there were 3 police patrol cars in the area ;)

On a serious note, ke garne...I have no need to hide my biases against absolutism and it's supporters, even though I assure every one of them that I do not, and will never, hold any personal grudges against them. By reporting the truth as I saw it, I was only hoping to express my disagreements with the other camp democratically. I particularly wanted to refute some of the obviously exagerated lies that are being spread.

Furthermore, similar pictures are already published at NepalHorizons.com (the link to which is given above by this thread's original poster). Having noticed the site leaning heavily towards the King, and theyobviously saw no harm in posting 105 pictures from the rally there, I hope I did no further damage by posting similar pictures here, although from a different camera.

Atill, if I am to make some enemies by simply choosing to disagree, so be it. Truth, as I see it, shall not be abandoned by me.
